Warhammer: Saiyan Adopted by the Wolf King

Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The Emperor: My Custodes Have Become Space Marine!

The Emperor had initially thought something must have gone wrong.

According to his calculations, Axis and the others should have only arrived about a day ago.

To eliminate all the Space Marines of the Second Legion and then kill the Second Primarch would have taken Axis at least a dozen days, if not longer.

After that, there was still the Exterminatus order to carry out, a mission that, no matter how you looked at it, would have taken at least two months to complete in full.

So the Emperor suspected that something unexpected had happened with this mission. Perhaps the Xenos Rangdan had come back for revenge!

"Great Lord of Humanity, I have something to report to you," Kasha began.

"Kasha, did something go wrong with the mission? Did you run into some difficulties?" the Emperor asked.

"No, Great Lord of Humanity! The mission has already been completed successfully," Kasha replied.

Even though the person before her was her biological father, she could not call him "Father"; she still had to address him as the Emperor of Mankind or appropriate titles.

Only when she completed the tasks he assigned and formally regained her status could she refer to the Emperor as her father.

For now, she was only a sanctioned psyker.

"The mission was completed flawlessly. I am here to give you a full report on the battle," Kasha said.

"The mission was completed flawlessly? How could that be? Did you arrive at the target planet earlier than scheduled?" The Emperor asked with a hint of surprise.

When traveling through the Warp, it was possible to arrive according to schedule, but it was also possible to be late by years, centuries, or even millennia.

There was a much slimmer chance of arriving early.

A trip that should have taken two or three months could sometimes be done in a month, or even just over a dozen days.

The Emperor suspected Axis and his team had experienced this, arriving at the target world a month ahead of schedule.

But Kasha wouldn't have failed to report it, would she?

"Emperor, we did not arrive ahead of time. We only reached the target star system yesterday," Kasha said.

"So you mean to tell me that Axis, Russ, and the others completed the mission in a single day?" At this point, the Emperor could no longer sit still.

Was this some kind of joke? Complete the mission in a day? Were the Primarchs he had created just some random nobodies?

Were his own Astartes legions nothing but cannon fodder?

"Yes, Lord Emperor!" Kasha affirmed.

"Kasha, give me a full and unabridged report of everything that happened on this mission. I want every detail and every result," the Emperor demanded.

It seemed that, he, in the end had underestimated Axis' combat power.

He had already tried to overestimate the boy's strength, but in the end, he had still underestimated him.

Kasha recounted the full details, at least what she was told by Axis.

"... In the end, Axis did not eliminate the Second Primarch. Instead, he used the power of Ki to heal the damage to the Primarch's brain. However, the Second Legion could not be saved, they were over ninety percent wiped out, with only 832 survivors," Kasha reported truthfully.

The Emperor fell silent.

Axis hadn't taken a full day.

He had solved the entire situation, defeating a whole Space Marine Legion and a Primarch single-handedly, in just a few hours.

This level of combat power was almost equal to what he himself could achieve! And when the Emperor took action, he always had to employ psychic powers.

Axis, on the other hand, had relied solely on this thing called Ki.

What truly surprised and delighted the Emperor was that the Second Primarch had survived!

That brat Axis had truly lived up to his expectations, even developing Ki for use in healing.

When he first came into contact with this Ki energy, the Emperor could sense the life force it contained.

Otherwise, it wouldn't have been able to strengthen the body.

He hadn't expected that after just a few months of awakening, Axis had already grasped the basics of healing.

Although still clumsy, he could hone this ability further in the heat of battle.

It would not be long before Axis completely mastered it.

"You've all done well. I will see to it that everyone is rewarded. Now, get the Second Primarch to Holy Terra as quickly as possible," the Emperor said, satisfied.

"Lord Emperor! There is one more thing to report. Now that the Second Primarch has been saved, should the Exterminatus still proceed?" Kasha asked.

Though Russ had already decided not to go through with Exterminatus, everything ultimately depended on the Emperor's will.

If the Emperor insisted, the order would have to be carried out.

"Since the Second Primarch has returned, there is no need to annihilate the Second Legion. The Exterminatus order is hereby cancelled, by my authority," the Emperor declared.

He was not some bloodthirsty tyrant.

The reason for Exterminatus in the first place was to protect the secret of the Second Primarch's death.

Now that the Primarch had been rescued, this incident could be treated as just another war, albeit a costly one.

Although the Second Legion had been crippled, as long as the Primarch remained, it would only take a few decades to rebuild.

"Yes, Lord Emperor. I will inform everyone on the ship," Kasha replied.

As expected, things were unfolding just as she had anticipated. Now it was time to ask about Axis.

"Good. Next, Axis will remain with the Space Wolves, and you will stay by his side. Is there anything else?" the Emperor asked.

"Axis has suggested that sixteen Custodians escort the Second Primarch to Holy Terra and provide close protection," Kasha said tactfully.

"To escort a Primarch, four Custodians would be enough. Doesn't Axis want those Custodian squads to stay by his side?" The Emperor immediately saw through Axis', or rather, his daughter's, intentions.

It was no surprise that his daughter felt a little uneasy about the Custodians, but officially, Axis himself was also a Custodian! Even if his modifications were the same as those of the Primarchs.

So what did Axis want? As the Captain of the Custodian Shield Company, those Custodians were officially under his command.

"Emperor, the Custodians represent your authority. If sixteen Custodians were to remain stationed with the Space Wolves for a long time, it could cause the other Primarchs to develop certain opinions. For example, they might feel that Russ is receiving too much of your favor," Kasha explained.

If it was just Axis by himself, having been adopted as Russ' son and chosen by the Emperor to undergo Custodian augmentation, now returning to help Russ in battle, the other Primarchs could treat him as a special kind of Space Marine.

But if an entire Custodian squad remained by Russ' side, that would be a different story.

Upon hearing this, the Emperor fell silent for a moment.

He didn't know exactly how the other Primarchs would react, but after decades together, he knew his firstborn son Horus would definitely have opinions, and he had already been quite displeased when Russ returned.

"The Custodians represent the Emperor's authority. Ask Axis again: does he really want the Custodian squad to return?" the Emperor said.

Kasha nodded, immediately withdrew from the Warp psychic communication, and turned to Axis.

"Axis, the Emperor wants to know if you are certain about sending all sixteen Custodians back to Holy Terra, instead of keeping them with you?"

"I'm certain. Keeping the Custodians here would cause unnecessary trouble. Even I would prefer to hide my identity. Please tell the Emperor that I am willing to exchange my merit in this mission for that," Axis replied.

He had already thought it through.

His physique was just right to pass as a Space Marine, and no one would suspect anything.

Kasha nodded and relayed Axis' wishes to the Emperor.

"...I understand.

"Tell Axis that the rescue of the Second Primarch is now an Imperial secret. For the time being, I am relieving him of his Custodian status. He will remain with Russ as a Space Marine Captain," the Emperor finally agreed, granting Axis' request.

Having sixteen Custodians remain with Russ really would have caused a lot of trouble.

In any case, Axis would return as the Captain‑General after the Great Crusade ended.

It was only a matter of two or three centuries at most. His merits would be more than enough by then.

The Emperor also suspected another reason Axis didn't want the Custodians around: the genetic flaws in the Space Wolves' gene-seed.

As the creator of the Primarchs and Astartes, how could the Emperor not know about these flaws?

But such things couldn't be avoided, considering he had used vast amounts of Warp technology, much of it bartered from the Chaos Gods, to create the Primarchs.

It was likely that Axis already knew the secret of the Wolves and wanted to protect them by moving the Custodians away.

The Emperor was genuinely pleased that the Second Primarch had been rescued, so he was happy to grant Axis this favor.

"Oh, and as for everyone's memories, you're responsible for cleaning those up. I'm sure I can trust youw with this."

"I understand, Lord Emperor!" Kasha nodded and cut off the psychic link.

After ending the communication, a look of joy instantly appeared on Kasha's face.

With Axis freed from the Custodians, she too was free.

"Congratulations, Axis. From today, you are temporarily relieved of your post as Custodian Shield Captain. You'll be a Company Captain of the Space Marines. Only Leman Russ and you will know your true identity," Kasha said.

"That really is good news. But what about the people who already know I'm a Custodian?" Axis asked.

"I'll use psychic powers to erase their memories. Only Russ and I will remember your true identity," Kasha assured him.
