Chapter 45: Chapter 45: The Awakened One, the Emperor’s True Bloodline
After bestowing the armor upon Axis, the Emperor also arranged for a mighty Imperial Invincible-class cruiser for Axis.
Axis, along with sixteen Custodian Guards and a special, authorized psyker, set out together for their target planet.
The commander of this Imperial cruiser had received secret orders from the Emperor himself: no crew member was permitted to have any contact with Axis or his party.
Even the living quarters for Axis and the sixteen Custodian Guards were completely sealed off, with exactly two hundred and twenty rations delivered every day.
Axis, sixteen Custodian Guards, plus one authorized psyker, only amounted to eighteen people in total, yet they required food for 220 people.
This led some sailors aboard the Imperial cruiser to speculate that the Custodian Guards might be escorting some kind of massive xenos creature.
But as soon as rumors started, the captain immediately reprimanded his crew and strictly forbade anyone from discussing or inquiring about the matter.
If Axis needed to communicate with the Emperor, he would do so through the accompanying authorized psyker, never via the Astropaths aboard the cruiser.
This time, the Imperial Navy's only responsibility was to deliver them to the destination.
Upon arrival, Axis and the sixteen Custodian Guards would depart in a landing craft. The entire operation was to remain secret.
From start to finish, these mortals had no idea what their true mission was.
This Imperial Navy cruiser measured 5.5 kilometers long and 0.7 kilometers wide, with over sixty thousand crew members.
Although a section of the ship was cordoned off for Axis and the Custodian Guards, it clearly wasn't spacious enough for proper combat training.
So, each day, Axis could only use his ki at regular intervals to reinforce the Custodian Guards' bodies.
Life aboard was excruciatingly dull.
The only comfort for Axis was the presence of the authorized psyker assigned by the Emperor, a stunning blonde woman.
Whenever she used her psychic powers, her eyes would flash with a faint golden light.
When Axis wasn't training his own ki in his quarters, he would occasionally chat with this psyker.
At this time, the Emperor had not yet ascended the Golden Throne, so the sanctioning processes had yet to become so extreme.
"How do you communicate with the Emperor while in the Warp?" Axis asked.
"Authorized psykers are linked to the Emperor's psychic power through a special contract, using the Astronomican to relay messages," the psyker girl replied.
But she herself did not require such a contract to speak with the Emperor.
Her connection with him ran far deeper than anyone else's.
"I still don't know your name. What should I call you?" Axis asked.
For some reason, he always felt there was something unusual in the way she looked at him when they talked.
"My name is Kasha. The Emperor himself gave me this name," Kasha answered with meaningful emphasis.
"Kasha, huh? That's a nice name," Axis replied.
"Thank you!" Kasha said.
"So, Kasha, do you know the details of this mission? And what is your role within the Imperium?" Axis asked.
"I do know the specifics of this mission.
"And my mission is to use my psychic powers to erase everyone's memories once the mission is done with, to ensure secrecy.
"I'll be following you from now onm, delivering messages to the Emperor on your behalf, and handling some… cleanup work," Kasha explained, "As for my identity, I am an Awakened One."
'Oh, Great Father, could I really fulfill your orders? Why was I given such a strange assignment?'
"Awakened One?" Axis was a little confused.
Did psykers have such a title? Did it refer to some kind of psychic awakening, or was there another meaning?
Noticing the puzzled look on Axis's face, Kasha immediately understood, he had no idea what an "Awakened One" actually was.
And that made sense.
In the entire Imperium, only a handful truly knew what that title meant.
So what were the Awakened? They were the Emperor's true descendants, his bloodline born through natural means, the children of the Emperor and mortals.
Unlike the Primarchs, who were the Emperor's genetic offspring, Awakened Ones were his biological children, inheriting powerful psychic abilities and part of the Emperor's immortal physiology.
As long as they weren't killed, they could live indefinitely, something like a different kind of Perpetual. They weren't deathless, but they never aged.
It was a gift from the Emperor's own bloodline, the closer the bloodline, the greater the gift.
Kasha had been born during Terra's Age of Strife, when the Emperor was still battling techno-barbarian warlords.
At that time, her mother and father were still in love, eventually, until a certain event happened; her so-called twenty brothers were cast into the Warp.
Because of her mother's persuasion, she had also participated in that event, using her psychic power to help her mother.
Afterward, her mother and father completely broke off, and the Emperor never trusted "bloodlines" or "kinship" again.
In fact, even Kasha's existence was erased by the Emperor, and she was imprisoned in the dungeons beneath the Imperial Palace on Terra.
It wasn't until ten years ago that the Emperor released her, assigning her a very special mission.
If she succeeded, her title as Imperial Princess would be restored.
If she failed, she would face eternal imprisonment beneath the palace.
"Is your psychic power really that strong? How do you compare to Malcador?" Axis asked.
If she could wipe the memories of an entire ship, that was no ordinary psychic power!
"Malcador is a bit stronger than me, but your average psyker isn't a match for me," Kasha replied.
The power inherited from the Emperor's true bloodline was beyond mortal imagination.
Among all authorized psykers in the Imperium, only the Emperor and Malcador were stronger than her.
"All right then. I'm heading back," Axis nodded, turning to leave.
"Wait, Lord Axis!" Kasha suddenly called after him.
"What is it?"
"In the future, if I ever need a favor, would you help me out?" Kasha asked.
"Sure. Since the Emperor assigned you to me, I'll do what I can," Axis replied.
He even thought he could use his ki to strengthen the psyker girl's body, after all, psykers tended to be frail.
"Oh? In that case, what if I wanted your genetic seed?" Kasha asked, smiling.
"I'm not a Primarch. I don't have anything like that," Axis said.
He wasn't a Primarch, so how could he have gene-seed? Besides, she was a woman, she couldn't undergo Astartes transformation anyway!
"Not that kind of gene-seed. I mean the kind that can create new life," Kasha said with a grin.
"???" Axis was speechless.
He thought they were just chatting, but she suddenly took things in a whole different direction.
[tl/n: So, the author described the 'Awakened one' as an old piece of lore, but I highly doubt it since I couldn't find anything related after searching for a while. Its pretty obvious it's fan theory with how it's mentioned there are 21 Primarchs earlier in the story.
Maybe I'm just missing something. If any of you guys know anything related to this, please mention it in the comments.]
