The morning sun filtered through the cracked shutters of the inn. Ethan sat at the window, shirtless as usual, his arms resting on the sill. A light breeze rolled in, thick with the scent of salt, smoke, and wet wood. He could still hear Bellamy's voice from the night before.
"Dreams are for fools."
But fools build ships. Fools cross oceans. Fools find islands in the sky.
Behind him, Kaya stirred in bed, pulling the sheets up to her chin. Vivi was already up, brushing her hair in front of the mirror, quiet but thoughtful. Robin, true to form, was already gone—off gathering information like a ghost in the shadows.
Ethan stood, sliding on his coat.
"Where are you going?" Kaya asked, still drowsy.
"Robin left a note. Said there's someone we should meet. Outside the town."
They followed Robin's directions through the dense forest at the edge of Jaya. The path wound beneath overgrown trees and past collapsed fences until they reached a wide clearing. A rundown shack sat near the water's edge, with nets hanging from poles and crates scattered across the ground.
A shirtless man sat at the end of the dock, fishing rod in hand, scars sprawling across his back.
"That's Mont Blanc Cricket," Robin said softly.
He turned as they approached, peering through his messy beard. His gaze locked on Ethan.
"You're the one with the bounty," Cricket said flatly.
Ethan shrugged. "And you're the guy chasing fairy tales."
Cricket gave a short laugh. "Takes one to know one."
Robin stepped forward. "We want to know about the Sky Island."
Cricket's eyes narrowed slightly, searching their faces for mockery. But all he found was sincerity.
"…Come inside," he muttered.
The shack was cluttered but lived-in. Maps covered the walls. Weather journals and torn books lined the tables. Cricket unrolled a large chart and tapped a location marked by rough waves and a sharp upward spiral.
"This is the Knock-Up Stream. It shoots from the sea like a geyser, maybe once every few days. If you time it right, it'll take you straight to the sky."
"And if we're wrong?" Vivi asked.
"Then you die," Cricket replied.
Kaya looked nervous. "You've tried it?"
"Too many times," he said. "And it broke my bones every time. But if you're serious, I'll help."
Ethan stared at the map for a long moment.
Robin tilted her head. "Why are you doing this? What's your reason?"
Ethan answered without hesitation.
"Because it sounds interesting."
Cricket blinked. Vivi looked confused. Kaya tilted her head.
"That's it?" Kaya asked.
He gave a faint grin. "Do I need more?"
"You're not looking for treasure?" Robin asked. "Not chasing something lost or sacred?"
"I've already had all that. I've killed monsters. Broken chains. Saved kingdoms. But when someone tells me there's an island in the sky… it just makes me curious. That's reason enough."
Cricket stared at him for a moment—then slowly, he smiled.
"You're crazier than I thought."
"Maybe," Ethan said, "but it's better than rotting on the ground."
The rest of the day was spent preparing the ship.
Cricket and Robin coordinated hull reinforcements, measuring wood, bolting steel plating where they could. Kaya and Vivi managed supplies, filling barrels with water and preserving food. Ethan moved from task to task without speaking much—his focus razor-sharp, like a man preparing for something reckless and thrilling.
At sunset, they gathered by the edge of the water.
The wind blew stronger now.
"The current should erupt tomorrow," Cricket said. "Early morning. You'll have a narrow window."
Ethan nodded. "Then we're ready."
Kaya stood beside him, arms crossed. "You're really set on this."
"Of course."
"Even if we don't find anything?"
"Then it's still a hell of a ride."
Vivi smiled. "You really are strange."
"I've been called worse."
Robin chuckled. "You sound like someone chasing wonder for its own sake."
"Isn't that what pirates are supposed to do?"
They stood in silence, watching the horizon. No grand speeches. Just the rustling wind, the shifting tide, and the thrill of the unknown.
Somewhere above them, maybe miles beyond reason, the sky held a secret.
And they were going to find it.
