The New Elemental God

Chapter 5: Chapter 1.3 - Darkness

Before she could finish he hung up the phone to get by another car in his way. To Adam it seemed every car in the road was trying to upset him by driving too damn slow.

So he had an idea between gulps of scotch. There was a particular straight road he liked to race alone, that's where he wanted to go. Speeding up, he set his course to the curvy hill that was the only access to his refugee track.

Clumsy, he remembered the exit he had to take at the last minute. As he crossed the three-lane highway from left to right, cars whizzed past him, narrowly avoiding a collision in his reckless, near-suicidal maneuver.

It was late at night. The way he took was deserted and far from the city lights, which was perfect to watch the stars. Leaning over the wheel he tried to take a better look but the movement twisted the wheel making the car wobble.

Laughing at himself, he coldly got control back, avoiding a crash against the guardrail. To celebrate his professional skills he took another gulp. The boy was so drunk he spilled it entirely, something he would never do to his car if he was in his right mind. He was soaking in alcohol and all he did was crack a rib.

Turning his attention back to the road ahead, he noticed a white dot in the windshield. Adam's sight was unsteady, making it hard for him to see what it was. Then another dot appeared and another. He counted them until he understood it was raining.

"Wow, I love the rain!"

Completely out of his mind, he stuck one hand out of the window just as he entered the winding descent. Turning the wheel with one hand he was managing to keep control, in spite of the high speed and the slippery asphalt.

The curves were very accentuated followed by a straight line, and so repeated til it arrived at the ground level. Adam was used to driving that route, it gave him chills in the stomach during every turn.

For a two way street, the Playboy was driving right in the middle of the road. Exceeding the speed limit on a sharp curve was risky; the car kept sliding into the opposite lane.

Still, Adam was having fun and had forgotten about his recent betrayal. At least that's what he was telling himself. Every time the image of Jenifer and Finn popped up he shook his head and buried his foot on the go pedal.

Being a skilled driver from an early age was something he had always been proud of. He used to race in private tracks and that's what was giving him confidence to drive so recklessly.

He went for one more sip but the bottle was empty. Upset, he threw it through the open window. The rain was wetting his shoulder and splashing on the wheel but nothing bothered Adam. He was unshakable at that movement. Nothing and no one would ever fool him again.

In the next morning he would march to the office and fire Jenifer. Then, he would tell his father to kick Finn's dad off the board and fire Rick and Bob's dad as well. He got jobs for all of them so he could get them back if he wanted.

One last curve and he would arrive at his favorite place. He would forget everything and would go back to his old self.

With all his life decided, tomorrow would be a new day.

Adam turned the wheel to the right. The rain had soaked the road. As the Playboy stepped on the break, the car's trunk slipped to the middle of the road.

Out of nowhere a bright light blinded Adam. His car was sliding too far because of the water. When the boy realized it was another car coming in the opposite direction, it was too late. He turned the wheel left to throw the back of his car away from the other vehicle.

The light was scattering on the rain drops, making Adam close his eyes as an instinctive reaction. The buzzing crossed his head like a serrated knife.

Completely out of control, the Playboy kept holding the wheel, hoping he would miss the other car.

It was so fast. The road went dark a second later. Adam was still turning, he pulled the wheel back but nothing happened. The tires were sliding over the water, he couldn't control the car.

The world was spinning.

Shit.

In the center of a bright flash he saw a metal bar. Next, he lost his breath when he felt a violent impact.

And then, darkness.
