Chapter 7: Sparks emerge
They now turned their attention to the notebook that they found in the chest earlier.
They flipped through the pages, trying to get a basic idea of the contents.
Once again, the notebook was filled with writings that they did not understand yet. However, there were a multitude of diagrams present in the notebook that gave them the general idea.
Many of the diagrams showed unique writings, looking like magic runes. They were clearly different from the characters that seemed to make up the written language of the other objects he had found.
Others of the diagrams showed pictures of the pedestal. From what they could understand, the notebook contained instructions for some kind of ritual involving the pedestal. As they didn't know the written language, they couldn't exactly determine the end result of the ritual.
"If its sealed away in this chest, it's probably a 50/50, either something really good, or something dangerous. But if they kept it along with their money, it's probably something good." They thought.
They now went over to the pedestal in order to try to match up the diagrams to what he was seeing in real life.
The diagrams showed different markings, displaying a progressing of steps that seemed to involve doing some kind of action to the pedestal.
One of the diagrams showed something going into the pedestal, then being magnified as it came out.
The diagram next to it showed a large symbol on the wall.
The pedestal seemed to have some kind of magnification, or changing power of energy in order to complete the ritual.
Now they looked through to figure out what they had to do to put energy into the pedestal.
The images showed a person holding what looked to be a wand, and shooting into the pedestal.
"It looks like I will need to learn some basic magic in order to activate the ritual."
Unfortunately, knowledge of how to do magic was not part of the basic information that they woke up with.
Finishing through the notebook, they compiled a list in their mind of what the general idea of the ritual is.
1. Draw some kind of rune on the wall
2. Put energy into the pedestal through magic
3. The pedestal magnifies the energy, and shoots it into the wall
4. Something happens with the rune
5. Then they wait
All in all, other than the learning magic part, it seemed not horrible for a magic ritual.
They now opened the scroll. Opening it, they breathed a sigh of relief. It had no writing on it, just pictures. Finally.
Another lucky thing about the scroll, it seemed to have some basic magic tutorials on it. Whoever compiled the contents of the chest seemed to want whoever opened it to be able to do the ritual.
They silently thanked them for the inclusion of the scroll, but then they realized that they were a strange cult person that was involved in making this whole deal, so they switched to cursing them, but slightly less because they included the scroll.
The scroll was long, and had many small pictures on it.
They started with the beginning. The first image had two parts, first an image of a body, clearly to indicate that a body was involved. The second image was what looked like a whirlwind superimposed on top of the body.
"This is probably trying to say that magic is somehow stored in the body?" They thought.
The second image showed the body concentrating, dispersing the superimposed whirlwind evenly throughout their body.
"Alright, lets try it. I've concentrated before, I don't know what's different about this kind, but lets see what it does." They thought.
They clenched their body, attempting to do what the body in the image was doing.
Nothing in particular happened.
Now they thought, "Maybe I need to clear my mind. Maybe it's a meditation monk thing."
They stood, palms facing up, clearing their mind.
Still nothing.
Now, they tried the opposite. They focused their entire brain on harnessing some kind of magic.
They now felt something. A faint, strengthening feeling through their whole body. It was very faint, it felt about enough for them to lift about 1 more pounds than they could before.
"Because I am harnessing my energy inside, I should call this inspell."
[Minor full body inspell obtained]
They realized that they could maintain it for about three seconds before their concentration faded. But it was progress none the less. Any kind of power was good power.
They concentrated again, using their mind to focus on their energy again. While concentrating, they felt they couldn't move much, lest the magic break.
They felt the minor strength again, evenly spread throughout their body. This time it lasted for about four seconds, a slight improvement.
They repeated the process a few more times, each time feeling slightly more comfortable with it. The amount of time they could hold it for reached five seconds.
Despite having slight improvements in amount of time being able to hold it, they felt no difference in the degree of power they felt.
After doing it a few times, they felt.. thirst. It wasn't a kind of thirst attributed to water, they just felt like they were losing something, and wanted to gain it back.
Because they felt that the thirsty feeling was directly related to doing an inspell, he decided to call it "Spell-thirst", a simple same for what it was.
They decided that they had enough for now. Later, they would return to advancing their magic, but they were tired.
They decided to sleep in the chamber with the altar, it was where they kept most of their stuff, and where they felt most comfortable in the dungeon. They were slowly getting used to their life in the three enclosed rooms, however small and miserable it may be.
[Rest]
They slept a dreamless night.
Awaking, their thirst was gone. It seemed that much like blood, the energy used for magic replenished itself.
They felt ready to continue learning magic from a scroll. It was no professional teacher, but it would likely do to get through the ritual.
