"I finally escaped. Thank you for your hard work, Gabite."

After confirming he had put enough distance between them and that his pursuer was confused by his earlier performance and hadn't followed, Morning Sun stopped and quickly dismounted from Gabite's back.

It wasn't that Morning Sun disliked Gabite or anything like that; it was just that riding during their recent escape hadn't been particularly comfortable. Although Gabite hadn't yet evolved into Garchomp, its speed was impressive. It had run so fast that Morning Sun could barely maintain his balance on its back.

"It just had to be raining today. I successfully escaped, but now I'm soaked like a drowned Rattata," Morning Sun complained, extremely dissatisfied with the heavy downpour that had drenched him completely.

"Fortunately, after all that running, we've arrived at Lavender Town. Let's head to the Pokémon Center to rest."

Indeed, their frantic escape had brought Morning Sun to the outskirts of Lavender Town.

Lavender Town appeared just as Morning Sun had glimpsed from a distance earlier. The entire town was shrouded in a lavender-colored mist. Despite signs of numerous inhabitants, the town didn't feel lively at all. After entering, Morning Sun noticed there were no tall buildings except for the imposingly tall Pokémon Tower. The other structures were no more than three stories high—three floors being the maximum height for residential buildings here.

Pedestrians hurried along the streets with downcast eyes. There was almost no conversation between townsfolk, creating an atmosphere of eerie coldness. Even when many people noticed Morning Sun, who was obviously an outsider, they showed no reaction after a quick glance. Some people even avoided him, as if he were dangerous.

"No matter how many times I visit, I never get used to this place," Morning Sun muttered to himself. "It was like this before my rebirth, and it remains the same now. Lavender Town feels like the setting of a ghost story. Only the Pokémon Center and the Poké Mart seem to have any activity."

Morning Sun observed Lavender Town's gloomy atmosphere and simply shook his head with a sigh. This wasn't his first visit, though before his rebirth it hadn't been raining. Still, the situation he encountered then was similar to now.

So when he met Sabrina earlier, it was understandable that he mistook her for a Gastly. Who could blame him? Seeing Sabrina levitating through the air using Psychic in such a place during such weather—anyone would think she was a ghost. It would be strange if they didn't.

"Because something has happened in Lavender Town recently, everyone is suspicious of strangers. Don't take it personally, young man," a voice spoke softly from behind.

"Oh my! Who's there?!" Morning Sun exclaimed.

The faint voice suddenly materializing behind Morning Sun startled him instantly. He immediately took a defensive stance and whirled around.

Morning Sun had been deep in thought, and the unexpected voice from behind had frightened him. If it hadn't been an elderly man standing there, Morning Sun would have suspected Sabrina had caught up to him.

"I apologize, young man. It seems I gave you quite a scare," the speaker said.

When Morning Sun turned, he discovered the voice belonged to an elderly man with a bald head but a very kind expression. Seeing that he had startled Morning Sun, the old man quickly apologized with a gentle smile.

"...It's fine, sir. I'm just on edge. This town has that effect on people," Morning Sun said, narrowing his eyes as he assessed the old man before responding.

"Lavender Town has always been this way. After all, this is the final resting place for most Pokémon, which naturally attracts many Ghost-type Pokémon. Sometimes these Ghost Pokémon behave like actual spirits, so the townspeople must remain vigilant."

"But generally speaking, the locals aren't usually this unfriendly. Something happened recently that has made everyone afraid to speak with strangers," the old man explained. "As for what occurred—well, it's raining now, so this isn't a convenient place to discuss it. Why don't you come to my house for a hot drink, and we can chat more comfortably?"

The elderly man patiently explained to Morning Sun, then turned and began walking away, not pressuring Morning Sun to follow.

"Aren't you afraid I might be one of those Ghost Pokémon disguised as a human? You're inviting me into your home so easily?" Morning Sun called out skeptically, though he was already following the old man, indicating his willingness to visit the man's house for their conversation.

"Haha, young man, don't be fooled by my appearance. I'm actually a Pokémon researcher, and I know a thing or two about Ghost-type Pokémon," the old man replied with kind eyes and a confident tone. "It's true that Ghost Pokémon can transform into strangers to frighten people, but they can't imitate Pokémon they've never encountered before."

"The two Pokémon with you—one is Gabite from the Sinnoh region, and the other is Greninja from the Kalos region. Most people in Kanto wouldn't recognize them, let alone the local Ghost Pokémon," the old man explained, accurately identifying the regional origins of Morning Sun's Pokémon that hadn't yet been returned to their Poké Balls. This confirmed he was indeed a knowledgeable Pokémon researcher.

This revelation made Morning Sun more certain of the old man's identity: Mr. Fuji, or perhaps Dr. Fuji. In the Pokémon world, a character often had different identities across various versions. Here, he appeared to be a Pokémon researcher.

As a researcher, Mr. Fuji would possess extensive knowledge and connections. Morning Sun naturally knew about Mr. Fuji's importance, so he gladly followed him to his house for what promised to be an informative conversation.

Though Lavender Town had a decent population, the town itself wasn't large. After walking for just over ten minutes behind Mr. Fuji, they arrived at what the elderly man called home—a spacious three-story building with a "Pokémon House" sign hanging at the entrance. The building was located in the more developed area of Lavender Town, suggesting Mr. Fuji was quite well-off.

"Here we are, this is my home. By the way, my name is Fuji. What's your name, young man?" Mr. Fuji led Morning Sun into the Pokémon House, realizing he hadn't asked for his visitor's name.

"My name is Morning Sun, Mr. Fuji. Is this a place dedicated to caring for Pokémon?" Morning Sun replied, asking a question to which he already knew the answer. He could see numerous Pokémon inside with caretakers attending to them.

"Morning Sun? What a fitting name. And yes, this is indeed a facility dedicated to caring for Pokémon—why else would it be called Pokémon House?" Mr. Fuji said with pride. "Come with me to the living room. I'll prepare you a hot drink."

Mr. Fuji seemed very proud of his Pokémon House, but he was also perceptive. Recognizing Morning Sun's interest in learning more about recent events in Lavender Town, he promptly led his guest to the living room, ready to share information about the matter.
