Seeing Alakazam preparing to attack, Eddie felt panic rising within him.

In that moment, time seemed to slow down as Eddie's mind raced through his options.

"I can't defeat this Pokemon. Sabrina doesn't seem interested in explanations—she just wants to eliminate me on the spot."

"Should I use the power of Viridian? With it, Charizard and Lucario might stand a chance, but Sabrina won't be easily beaten with just two Pokemon."

"Since she has Alakazam as her main Pokemon, she must have other powerful Pokemon with her. Two of mine won't be enough to defeat her."

"Besides, this rainy weather is particularly unfavorable for Charizard, and it would probably weaken my system skills."

Eddie deliberately avoided mentioning Greninja and Sceptile because when it came to gym leader level battles, the strength divisions became quite rigid.

Before reaching gym leader level, strength differences weren't so absolute. A senior trainer might not necessarily defeat a junior trainer who performed exceptionally well.

In other words, a level 30 Pokemon facing a level 29 Pokemon couldn't guarantee victory.

But after reaching gym leader level, the dynamics changed. A level 60 Pokemon would consistently defeat a level 59 Pokemon.

This meant that, barring exceptional circumstances, a gym leader trainer couldn't defeat a near-Elite trainer, even with just a ten-level gap between their Pokemon.

Greninja and Sceptile were currently at level 39. Even with Viridian's power boosting them by 20 levels, they would only reach level 59—still within gym leader strength. Against a near-Elite Pokemon, they would inevitably be defeated.

Although Eddie could have them all Mega Evolve to increase their fighting chance, Alakazam could also Mega Evolve. If Sabrina had a Mega Ring, they'd be right back where they started.

"I can't fight. Besides not being able to win, there's no need for conflict. It's just a misunderstanding. If I somehow win this battle, it would be a pyrrhic victory at best. If I lose, all my previous efforts would be wasted."

"Most importantly! Even if I won, it wouldn't benefit me. I'd just defeat a Gym Leader!"

Sabrina possessed Psychic abilities and specialized in Psychic-type Pokemon. If Eddie were defeated and forced to return to Pallet Town, his Pokemon wouldn't escape. If his Pokemon couldn't escape, everything he'd worked for would be lost.

"I need to find a way to stop this attack, or maybe..."

Just as Alakazam had gathered energy and was about to unleash Psychic, Eddie made his move!

"You Alakazam! You're here with Gastly pretending to be a ghost and scaring innocent people!"

Eddie pointed at Alakazam with an expression of extreme indignation.

Sabrina was stunned by this accusation, and Alakazam looked equally surprised, involuntarily halting its attack.

Gastly pretending to be a ghost? Alakazam working with Gastly? Wait, is he implying I look like a female ghost?

Anger flashed across Sabrina's typically cold face, veins practically visible on her forehead.

Now she understood why Eddie had attacked her—he had mistaken her for a Gastly in disguise.

Of course, this realization didn't diminish her desire to attack. If anything, it intensified it.

Alakazam was merely surprised, but Sabrina communicated telepathically with it, commanding it to continue the attack.

"I'm telling you, even if you're strong, I'm not afraid of you!" Eddie shouted.

"I know that there's a powerful and beautiful Psychic Gym Leader in Saffron City. Her name is Sabrina, and I know her very well! I can't beat you, and you can't escape me. I'll go to Miss Sabrina to deal with you—Gastly and Alakazam, menaces to humankind!"

Eddie maintained an aggressive stance, as if he fully intended to seek out his "acquaintance" Sabrina and return to confront these troublemaking Pokemon.

Sabrina and Alakazam were dumbfounded.

You know me well? I've never encountered such a fool in my life, and you're planning to ask me to deal with myself?

"Now, Greninja, let's go find Miss Sabrina to handle these two Pokemon!"

Eddie took advantage of their momentary confusion, his shouting designed to make it impossible for them to counter his ridiculous claims and behavior.

His strategy was to make them feel that taking him seriously would somehow be losing the exchange.

Greninja understood the situation perfectly, realizing it was completely outmatched. It immediately deployed Smokescreen.

The heavy rain had already created gloomy conditions, and with the addition of the Smokescreen, Sabrina and Alakazam's vision was instantly obscured by darkness.

But this wasn't enough. Sabrina possessed Psychic abilities, and Alakazam was a Psychic-type Pokemon. They could sense presences without relying on vision.

However, if they were attacked while attempting to sense, their concentration would be broken.

So just as Sabrina and Alakazam prepared to use their Psychic powers to locate Eddie's position through the obscured vision, an Ice Beam targeted Sabrina directly.

Yes—the target wasn't Alakazam.

Seeing this, Alakazam immediately deployed Light Screen again to block the attack.

Then came Rock Throw—a physical attack involving hurling stones. Light Screen was designed to defend against special attacks and couldn't repel physical ones.

Of course, this posed no problem for Alakazam. It quickly established Reflect in front of the Light Screen to defend against physical attacks.

"Wait! I'll definitely come back! Miss Sabrina will deal with you both!"

By this point, Eddie had already fled a considerable distance, yet his voice remained defiant, as if he weren't the one retreating.

Eddie's rapid escape was possible because he had released Lucario and was riding on its back.

Though it looked somewhat ridiculous, this wasn't the time to worry about appearances.

Alakazam remained confused. It felt that the trainer must be mentally unstable—asking its master to deal with its master?

Despite its exceptionally high IQ, the behavior of this "fool" was completely unpredictable, especially since the situation involved Alakazam's own trainer.

"Let it go, Alakazam. Although I could easily catch him if I pursued, there's no need to bother with such an amusing character. I feel like engaging seriously would somehow mean losing."

Sabrina no longer wanted to eliminate Eddie. She found him quite interesting—it was the first time she'd encountered someone so absurdly clueless. Sabrina felt that someone like him could add some unexpected entertainment to her life.

She gazed in the direction Eddie had fled—toward Lavender Town, which happened to be her destination as well. Perhaps she would encounter him again on her journey.

Even if they didn't meet again in Lavender Town, it hardly mattered. Judging by his youth and apparent strength, he must be a trainer on an adventure. There was a good chance he would eventually challenge the Saffron City Gym.

She would see him then.

If he discovered that she was Sabrina, the Gym Leader of Saffron City, his expression would undoubtedly be priceless.

Sabrina imagined Eddie's surprised and embarrassed face, and how she could dominate him in a gym battle to teach him the consequences of calling a woman a female ghost.

As she pictured Eddie's defeated expression after being thoroughly trounced by her Pokemon, her mood brightened considerably.

With a wicked smirk, she resumed her slow walk toward Lavender Town.
