"Ding! Larvitar gained experience! Level +5! Reached level 23! Learned [Scary Face]!"
The Rock Tunnel wasn't particularly long, and the Pokémon inside were ones Eddie had already captured before. Their levels weren't high either. Eddie only caught the ones he hadn't added to his collection yet, allowing him to pass through the Rock Tunnel rather quickly.
As a result, Larvitar didn't level up much, reaching only level 23 by the time they exited the tunnel.
Throughout their journey, Eddie had instructed his captured Pokémon to dig up soil to feed Larvitar. Though Larvitar needed to eat considerable amounts, fortunately, the storage space treated soil as a single unit. No matter how much soil was collected, it only counted as one grid space, with just the quantity displayed numerically.
"Golbat, Graveler, Cubone, Marowak, even Rhyhorn—this place isn't bad at all," Eddie remarked as he emerged from the Rock Tunnel. The number of Pokémon in his Pokédex was approaching 100, which meant another reward was waiting to be claimed.
Just thinking about it made him happy—the rewards had never disappointed him before.
"Is this Lavender Town? It's as gloomy as the rumors say. The presence of Ghost Pokémon living here is unmistakable."
As soon as Eddie exited the Rock Tunnel, he spotted Lavender Town in the distance and immediately noticed the entire town was enveloped in a purple haze.
Eddie's observation wasn't wrong. The purple mist was actually the gaseous form of Gastly.
Gastly is a Pokémon composed entirely of gas, which means that wherever Gastly appears, the area becomes shrouded in purple mist.
Perhaps the name Lavender Town was related to this very phenomenon.
"Wait, why are there so many graves right after leaving the Rock Tunnel? This is just the outskirts of Lavender Town, right? Are there so many graves that they needed to extend the cemetery all the way out here?"
Indeed, as soon as Eddie emerged from the tunnel, he was confronted by countless graves, packed so densely that it was impossible to distinguish one from another.
It was said that ever since Lavender Town was established, Pokémon had been buried here. Even the locals probably couldn't count the exact number of graves.
The most famous landmark in town was undoubtedly the towering Pokémon Tower. The structure seemed to perpetually mourn the departed souls while guiding them to their rest.
Although Lavender Town was well-known, few people visited. Anyone who entered would find their mood growing heavy from the somber atmosphere, feeling an inexplicable sadness.
Of course, players seeking excitement in their gaming experience would be drawn to exploring such eerie places.
However, most players had only reached Cerulean City at this point. It might take them several more days to arrive here.
"This is primarily a place to capture Ghost Pokémon. There's only one hidden task, and since I'm already here, I might as well take it on," Eddie mused.
"Although I wonder if my early arrival has changed something."
In the anime, Lavender Town didn't receive much coverage, but the games and manga featured more substantial plots.
In the games, Team Magma caused trouble, and someone named Mr. Fuji attempted to persuade them, only to be captured. The player would then come to rescue him.
In the manga, Team Rocket created similar problems, but it was Mr. Fuji who investigated and ended up being controlled, requiring Jacob to come to his rescue.
"Mr. Fuji seems to have different identities across versions. I wonder which one he'll be in this world," Eddie pondered.
Since entering the game, Eddie had discovered many things that differed from his expectations.
The hidden task before his rebirth was to rescue Mr. Fuji, who had been captured in the Pokémon Tower, and drive away Team Rocket.
This matched the game's plot, but Eddie had recently encountered many manga plotlines, making him uncertain about what tasks awaited him next.
"Regardless, Team Rocket's behavior will remain consistent. I'll just go there and challenge them head-on. No fear—just action!" Eddie thought to himself as he walked toward Lavender Town.
"BOOM—"
The weather changed dramatically in an instant.
Lavender Town was notorious for its heavy rainfall.
Dark clouds gathered overhead, lightning sliced through the sky followed by rumbling thunder. Howling winds swept across the land, plunging everything into darkness.
"Should I be thankful I didn't release Charizard, Larvitar, and Gabite?" Eddie thought as he opened his umbrella against the downpour.
The flame on Charizard's tail couldn't be exposed to water, while Larvitar and Gabite, being Ground-type Pokémon, disliked rainy weather.
This wasn't merely about restricting their movement—it was about their safety.
Eddie naturally didn't want to run through the heavy rain, as it would soak his clothes. So he walked slowly toward Lavender Town, observing his surroundings.
After a few steps, he released Greninja, who leaped joyfully in the rain.
It was perfectly normal for a frog Pokémon to enjoy rainfall.
As for why Eddie released Greninja?
"It was fine when it wasn't raining earlier, but now with the rain and graves all around... this is too eerie."
Indeed, Eddie had only walked a short distance, and the graves around him multiplied.
Each tombstone seemed to tell the life story of a Pokémon. The howling wind through the cemetery sounded like wailing ghosts, explaining why few ventured here.
"No wonder nobody comes here. You'd never find someone wandering in such a place alone. Thankfully, I'm not by myself now."
Surrounded by countless tombstones that lined both sides of the undulating path, Eddie felt uneasy. Some markers appeared new, while others were weathered, their inscriptions barely legible, creating an intensely gloomy and frightening atmosphere.
That's why Eddie released Greninja for company. After all, the Water-type enjoyed being drenched in the rain. Letting him out benefited everyone, right?
After walking through the rain for more than ten minutes, Eddie suddenly halted, and Greninja's expression turned serious.
The seemingly endless cemetery had been empty except for them, but now, through the howling wind and heavy rain, a figure appeared before Eddie's eyes.
Due to his obscured vision, Eddie couldn't see the person clearly, but from the long hair and slender figure, he could barely make out that it was a woman.
"I've heard that Gastly often creates illusions or transforms into a girl or elderly woman to frighten people. Could that woman actually be a Gastly transformed just to scare me?"
"It's definitely a Gastly playing tricks. Look, Greninja, that person is walking in mid-air. She's obviously not human. How could a human walk through the air like that? Unless she has Psychic abilities."
Eddie wore an expression that said, "I've figured everything out," as he prepared to surprise the Gastly that was trying to frighten him.
"Greninja, get ready. We'll follow her, and when she's within your attack range, hit her with everything you've got."
Eddie patted Greninja's shoulder, who nodded and prepared to strike.
The woman—supposedly Gastly in disguise—was walking toward Lavender Town.
Eddie guessed this was Gastly's method of luring him to follow, planning to greet him before delivering a scare. Unfortunately, this Gastly seemed to have forgotten that humans don't possess the ability to walk on air, which immediately gave away its disguise to Eddie.
Deciding to give the trickster a surprise of his own, Eddie first played along, following at a distance before planning his counterattack.
As always, Eddie was a man of action. He quickened his pace and directed Greninja to follow the figure ahead.
The closer he got to the woman, the more clearly Eddie could see her from behind—long hair, high boots, short skirt, and black pantyhose.
"This Gastly is quite skilled. It transformed into such an attractive woman. From behind, she looks stunning. If her face matches her figure, she must be an ice queen type of beauty."
Why did he think of her as an ice queen? Because even from behind, Eddie sensed an aura of coldness and indifference radiating from her. If this wasn't the demeanor of an ice queen, Eddie would eat his hat!
"Too bad it's just a Gastly in the end. But since it took such an appealing form, I'll give it credit. Perhaps catching this Gastly wouldn't be a bad idea."
Eddie was impressed, but he didn't forget that no matter how beautiful the woman appeared, she was still a Gastly. Though if he managed to capture this particular Gastly, well... that might have its advantages.
Eddie and Greninja had positioned themselves less than 10 meters behind the woman. She seemed to notice their presence and was about to turn around—or perhaps Gastly was ready to begin its performance?
"A performance? I'm not in the mood for horror on such a rainy day. Greninja, attack now!"
Eddie pointed at the woman, and Greninja immediately understood the command. Opening his mouth, the Water-type Pokemon released a wave of malevolent energy toward the woman.
This was Dark Pulse—the logical choice for confronting a Ghost-type Pokemon.
"Hmph!"
At that moment, Eddie heard a cold, dismissive sound—as chilling as a winter wind, yet strangely melodious.
A sinking feeling settled in Eddie's stomach as he realized the voice sounded familiar. Despite being just a brief sound of contempt, something about it triggered a sense of recognition.
"Gastly wouldn't be able to mimic such a familiar voice... which means I might have just attacked an actual person..."
Eddie felt a pang of regret. He knew himself well—he rarely remembered unimportant people's names, faces, or voices. Conversely, those he did remember must be significant to him.
And now, he had mistaken someone for a Gastly and launched an unprovoked attack.
It was too late to stop the Dark Pulse; the attack had already been launched.
Just as the Dark Pulse was about to strike, the woman turned around.
Eddie saw her face and immediately knew he was in trouble.
She was indeed beautiful—an ice queen without question.
Her black hair with bangs across her forehead complemented her striking, cold features. She hovered about ten centimeters above the ground, hands clasped before her chest, her beautiful eyes as cold as steel. A long dress covered her enviable figure, with only the black stockings between her tall boots and short skirt exuding a woman's fatal charm.
The combination of long boots, black stockings, and queenly demeanor represented exactly the type of woman many men found irresistible.
Eddie didn't care what others thought—this was precisely the kind of beauty he admired most.
That's why he had remembered her voice and appearance so vividly, recognizing her from just that dismissive "hmph."
"What did I say before? No human can walk in the air unless they have Psychic abilities. Well, it turns out she really does have Psychic powers."
There were people with Psychic abilities in this world, though they were extremely rare. Coincidentally, one of the most famous Psychic Trainers in the Kanto region happened to be right in front of him.
She was none other than the Gym Leader of Saffron City, Psychic expert Sabrina!
Sabrina observed the approaching Dark Pulse with an unchanged expression, remaining coldly composed.
Suddenly, the air around her twisted, and an Alakazam with an imposing aura materialized.
The Alakazam had clearly been using its Psychic abilities to bend light, creating an invisibility effect.
As soon as it appeared, Alakazam gently waved its hand, and a solid-looking Light Screen formed in front of them.
Despite being a Psychic-type move, it easily blocked the Dark-type Dark Pulse.
The moment Alakazam appeared, Eddie instinctively pulled out his Pokedex and pointed it at the Pokemon.
Name: Alakazam
Type: Psychic
Ability: Synchronize (When poisoned, paralyzed, or burned, the opponent will also suffer the same status condition)
Level: 63 (Quasi-Elite level)
"..."
No wonder it had blocked the attack so effortlessly. Greninja was only level 39, while Alakazam was already level 63. With a 24-level difference, even if Greninja had evolved through their special bond, it couldn't hope to match this opponent.
Eddie noticed Alakazam's eyes glowing, clearly preparing to counterattack Greninja.
Meanwhile, Sabrina regarded him with a cold stare, as if looking at a dead man walking. She seemed ready to eliminate him on the spot.
Understandably so—if you're attacked without provocation while walking, no one would be in a pleasant mood. If Sabrina hadn't possessed such power, she could have been seriously injured or even killed.
In Eddie's position, if attacked from behind by an enemy, he would certainly retaliate fatally. Even if not an enemy, he would at least ensure the attacker ended up hospitalized.
The ice queen was known for her volatile temper, and Sabrina appeared ready to send Eddie to the afterlife.
"So let me get this straight—I mistook a Gym Leader for a Gastly and attacked her directly. Now she looks ready to send me to heaven. What exactly am I supposed to do now?"
"Urgently awaiting advice—Eddie is panicking!"
