"Morning Sun, seeing that you look anxious, I won't keep you waiting. Let me explain the current situation in Lavender Town," Mr. Fuji said as they entered the living room. He prepared a hot drink and handed it to Morning Sun before continuing.
"This isn't any secret in Lavender Town, though locals won't discuss it with outsiders. However, I've reached a point where I'm indifferent to potential consequences. I'm not afraid to tell you what's happening," Mr. Fuji's expression grew somber as he spoke.
"The most famous landmark in Lavender Town is naturally the Pokémon Tower, so visitors typically want to explore it," he explained. "But starting about a month ago, outsiders who entered the tower never appeared again. They all vanished without explanation."
Morning Sun frowned upon hearing this. Outsiders going missing? Team Rocket wouldn't make such a commotion, would they? Wouldn't this essentially announce to everyone that something suspicious was happening here?
Even if Lavender Town's residents didn't report these incidents to the Pokémon League, the League officials weren't stupid. When so many visitors enter Lavender Town and never emerge again, any reasonable person would realize something was wrong.
The reason Team Magma operated in the Pokémon Tower was to establish a secret base. For outsiders entering the tower, they'd typically send Pokémon to drive them away. After all, Ghost-type Pokémon could easily take the blame for scaring people off.
But now that the pattern was becoming obvious, when the League eventually dispatched a large team of Trainers to thoroughly search the Pokémon Tower, no matter how well-hidden the base might be, it would surely be discovered.
"...If it were just disappearances, that would be concerning enough, but the most terrifying part is that any local who has spoken with these outsiders falls seriously ill after the outsiders vanish," Mr. Fuji continued gravely.
"Over the past month, rumors have grown increasingly bizarre. People say this place is haunted, and urban legends about 'living coffins' and 'buried human figures' have begun circulating."
"Naturally, everyone in Lavender Town is in a state of panic. No one dares talk to outsiders anymore, and nobody ventures near the Pokémon Tower for fear they'll disappear too."
When Morning Sun heard about the illness, several possibilities immediately came to mind. He certainly didn't believe ghosts were responsible.
With his preexisting knowledge, Morning Sun deduced that all of this was human-orchestrated, making such events relatively straightforward to engineer.
After all, making people ill wasn't difficult. Whether using Poison-type or Ghost-type Pokémon, there were numerous methods to induce sickness, right?
As for targeting those who became ill—that was even simpler since they had interacted with outsiders. As long as someone was monitoring Lavender Town constantly, they could easily identify whoever spoke with visitors and deal with them accordingly.
"Mr. Fuji, since locals get sick after talking to outsiders, why are you willing to speak with me?" Morning Sun asked, puzzled. Though he couldn't immediately identify who was behind everything, he was curious why Mr. Fuji would risk interacting with him in these circumstances.
"Because I'm a Pokémon researcher, I recognize that such incidents are likely human-orchestrated rather than supernatural. That's why I'm not afraid," Mr. Fuji replied, his eyes suddenly flashing with conviction.
"I have several good friends who are researchers and powerful Trainers. When this started happening, I contacted them immediately and requested their help solving the problem."
"Unfortunately, they all have their own obligations, so they could only lend me a few powerful Pokémon for protection. I genuinely want to investigate myself, but I worry that as soon as I leave the Pokémon House, the mastermind might target this facility."
"Therefore, I've been forced to watch Lavender Town's situation deteriorate from here. But then I realized—if I can't go myself, I could still enlist powerful Trainers to solve this problem."
Mr. Fuji finished explaining the situation in one breath, then looked at Morning Sun with a meaningful smile that required no further interpretation.
"...It seems you had a purpose in telling me all this, Mr. Fuji. You appeared almost immediately after I arrived in Lavender Town. Have you been waiting specifically for outside Trainers?" Morning Sun finally understood why Mr. Fuji had approached him so quickly upon his arrival. The elderly researcher had been "lying in wait."
"However, I can't be the only Trainer who's come to Lavender Town in the past month. What about the others?" Morning Sun immediately identified the logical inconsistency. It couldn't be that he was the only visitor to Lavender Town during that period.
"Alas, I was away on business and only returned a week ago. By then, many people had already disappeared. After contacting various friends and borrowing several powerful Pokémon for protection, four days passed. I only began watching for visiting Trainers three days ago," Mr. Fuji explained patiently. Since he needed Morning Sun's help, he wanted to be completely transparent.
"Am I the only Trainer who's visited Lavender Town in these three days? That makes sense, I suppose. People don't come here every day," Morning Sun acknowledged. This explanation seemed reasonable. Lavender Town wasn't exactly a popular destination. Its gloomy, unsettling appearance deterred most casual visitors.
"That's not the case. Actually, a young Trainer about your age arrived yesterday. I explained the situation to him just as I've done with you. He also believed it was human-orchestrated, so he immediately entered the Pokémon Tower to investigate. But he hasn't returned yet. I fear the worst..." Mr. Fuji's face darkened considerably as he spoke, clearly worried that the Trainer had met with misfortune.
"A young Trainer? Did he tell you his name?" Morning Sun asked, suddenly experiencing a sense of foreboding. He suspected he knew exactly who this Trainer was.
"His name? Gary. Though he appeared somewhat arrogant, I could tell he was a good-hearted young man," Mr. Fuji replied, looking quite guilty. He clearly felt responsible for whatever had happened to Gary.
"So, I won't make the same mistake twice, Morning Sun. If you promise to investigate this matter, I'll lend you one of the Pokémon my friends entrusted to me. Even if you can't resolve the situation completely, this Pokémon should keep you safe."
"Of course, I won't expect you to work without compensation. After the matter is resolved, I'll give you something valuable—I guarantee you'll appreciate it."
"Ding! You triggered the hidden task: Mr. Fuji's request!"
"Task content: Take Mr. Fuji's Pokémon to solve the incident in the Pokémon Tower."
The electronic notification finally sounded, but Morning Sun couldn't acknowledge it immediately because Mr. Fuji was still speaking. Seemingly wanting to prove his sincerity, the elderly researcher took out three Poké Balls and released the Pokémon inside.
In an instant, three powerful and imposing Pokémon materialized in the living room:
Name: Arcanine
Ability: Flash Fire (immune to Fire-type moves; Fire-type moves strengthened when hit by them)
Level: 75 (Elite level)
Name: Lapras
Ability: Shell Armor (prevents critical hits)
Level: 75 (Elite level)
Name: Kangaskhan
Ability: Scrappy (allows Normal and Fighting-type moves to hit Ghost-type Pokémon)
Level: 81 (Champion level)
Morning Sun stared at the impressive Pokémon, then turned back to Mr. Fuji with curiosity in his eyes. "Mr. Fuji, I'm a bit curious—who exactly are these friends of yours? Would you mind introducing me to them?"
