Chapter 147: MSOC: Chapter 147
Boom! The Rasengan landed in the bowl, but instead of the expected explosion, it spun with a remarkably even, sustained pressure, leaving Konan and the others wide-eyed.
"His… his chakra control is incredible," Konan murmured, still awestruck. They had clearly felt the Rasengan's raw power—a force ready to explode—yet Kai had flawlessly controlled it, using it for culinary purposes. It was unbelievable.
"I… I think I understand why he's so strong!" Kuraki exclaimed. "He's probably using cooking to hone his chakra control. Mastering control increases chakra density and reduces consumption. He isn't just cooking; he's training his ninjutsu."
Kai had to concede that Kuraki's deduction, while unconventional, was surprisingly insightful. Even he hadn't consciously considered that level of connection. Konan and the others were speechless, unable to counter his argument.
Kai, however, didn't bother explaining. Once the meat and starch were formed into balls, he channeled chakra into his hand, instantly igniting a fierce flame. He pressed it against the pot, the oil inside instantly bubbling. Without hesitation, he dropped the meat balls into the hot oil.
A sizzling sound filled the air as the meat balls visibly turned golden brown. A rich aroma, a blend of various spices and oil, wafted on the breeze.
Once the lion's head meatballs were seven-tenths cooked, Kai opened a large earthenware pot filled with simmering broth, releasing a subtle aroma of abalone. This was Kai's homemade abalone broth—a condiment unheard of in the war-torn shinobi world.
As Kai added the lion's heads to the rich, non-greasy broth, the combined aroma caused everyone to instinctively inhale deeply. Konan's cheeks flushed, contrasting sharply with the sight of Kuraki's mushy compressed biscuits. Compared to Kai's culinary creation, they were utterly unappetizing.
Watching Kai expertly prepare thousands of braised lion's head meatballs and cover the pot, Konan swallowed hard, a wave of regret washing over her.
"Your biscuits are burning," Kai said, washing his hands.
Konan glared at Kuraki. "Everyone's hungry. Let's eat."
Eat?
Kuraki and the others looked at the mushy, watery biscuits. Compared to Kai's culinary masterpiece, they were utterly unappetizing. Kuraki wanted to slap himself for his earlier arrogance.
"Here, let's eat," Kuraki mumbled, serving the ruined biscuits.
Konan's nose twitched. The mission had failed, they were injured, and now this… If not for Kai's earlier display, she wouldn't feel so wronged. But now, her pent-up emotions erupted. Tears welled up. She'd shouldered the burden of Akatsuki through hardship and war.
"This is quite good," Kai said, surprising everyone.
Through blurry vision, Konan saw a familiar hand take her spoon and feed her a spoonful of the mushy biscuit. His words stunned her.
"It's only fair. I ate yours, so I'll treat you. The ingredients aren't the best, but the taste is good," Kai gently wiped away her tears. "That guy should be back soon."
Kuraki and the others stared, a longing in their hearts, as Kai led Konan towards the pot of delicious food.
"Join us. More people, more chopsticks."
Their excitement was interrupted by a tremor.
"An ambush?" Kuraki's face paled. Even the drooling Hidan looked serious. Only Kai and Kakuzu remained calm.
"Don't worry. It's the little three-tailed one," Kai said without turning, lifting the lid of the pot, releasing a wave of rich aroma. They sniffed the air and saw a massive creature emerge from the forest, trees snapping like twigs in its path. The bloody lion in its gaping maw almost made them jump out of their skin.
Was this the "cute" three-tailed beast Kuraki had praised?
"Boss, where did you get the lion's head? This aroma is killing me!"
"I just found seven or eight, and was about to chase more when your hunger called me back!"
"You weren't secretly making extra portions, were you?!"
The Three-Tails complained.
Kai rolled his eyes. "You're a tailed beast. All you do is eat. Your form has even changed. How will you fight later?"
"Boss, you said eat to lose weight. I'm starving. I can't lose weight on an empty stomach," the Three-Tails said, its eyes widening at the sight of the golden-brown, crispy braised lion's head meatballs. It tossed the lion it was carrying far away, reverting to its smaller, more familiar size. It yawned, then positioned itself by the pot, its gaze fixed on the food.
"Right, Little Three-Tails, someone wanted to hug and feed you earlier. What do you think?" Kai expertly added a starch glaze to the meatballs in the pot, enriching the broth. The golden meatballs, complemented by the boiled cabbage, were a feast for the eyes—a perfect blend of color, aroma, and taste.
