Chapter 148: MSOC: Chapter 148
The aroma of the food wafted through the forest, making Kuraki's face turn green. He regretted his earlier flattery; it had backfired spectacularly. His only relief was that the Three-Tails barely glanced at him before saying, "Boss, I don't want it. You're trying to slow me down."
"Boss, can we eat now? I've been waiting forever," the Three-Tails whined, echoing the sentiments of everyone else.
Seeing everyone's anticipation, Kai smiled and handed a braised lion's head meatball to Konan. "This is for you. I'm afraid you won't get enough otherwise."
"Mine?" Konan was surprised. The Three-Tails, however, was not.
"No!" Actually, since learning to use chopsticks with its paws, it could eat five at a time.
"Don't block me, these are all mine!"
"Boss, it's too hot! Are you trying to burn me?!"
"But it's amazing! Crispy on the outside, juicy inside, with a slight tingling sensation from the lightning seal, and that special sauce… it's heavenly!"
"Boss, you still owe me two meals!"
"No, I'll kill people after I eat. One slap per person. One meatball, ten kills!"
Watching the Three-Tails devour the food, Konan was speechless.
"Is… is that really a tailed beast?" she whispered. In their minds, tailed beasts were symbols of destruction, bringing chaos and death wherever they went. But the Three-Tails was acting like a mascot.
"Strange, isn't it?" Kai smiled, looking up at the sky. "Their destructive nature is a result of human ambition. If they had a choice, they'd probably want to live differently."
"Perhaps that's the pressure of life," he added.
Konan stared at Kai's profile, surprised by his mature words.
"Eat quickly, it'll get cold," Kai said, touching his nose, realizing he'd forgotten something.
Caw! A crow's caw broke the twilight silence. Kai looked up and saw a black crow land on his shoulder—Sasori's messenger.
Kai had learned from Kakuzu that Sasori targeted Hidan's immortality, planning to turn him into a human puppet. But Sasori had disappeared. Kai was surprised the artist would abandon such a project, but now he understood.
"Boss, something wrong?" Kakuzu kicked the gluttonous Hidan, asking.
Kai shook his head. "Minor matter. Let's eat first."
Kai wasn't worried about Sasori. Akatsuki members were all incredibly powerful. Unless it was a plot device, few could kill them. Sasori, with his three hundred puppets, could supposedly destroy a country. A few days wouldn't matter.
The meal ended quickly. The Three-Tails, lying on its back, belched, already planning to hunt more lions with Kuraki to make more lion's head meatballs. Kuraki, flattered, offered more compliments, causing laughter.
Only Konan frowned, lost in thought.
"Say what's on your mind. I might not marry you, but I'm a good guy who helps old ladies cross the road," Kai said, sitting beside her.
Konan froze, feeling his warmth in the cool night air, instinctively leaning closer. She quickly corrected herself, blushing. "This mission was crucial for Akatsuki."
"The damage to Amegakure from the Second Shinobi World War hasn't been repaired, and the Third Shinobi World War has begun. Hanzo of the Salamander, as a mercenary, has drawn more conflict to Amegakure!"
She paused, biting her lip, tears welling up.
"If money solves the problem, it's not a problem," Kai patted her shoulder. "Take this. I have plenty of money."
Kakuzu almost choked on his own blood. Kai was using his money to show off. But as Kai said, Kakuzu, having lived nearly a century, was incredibly wealthy. He lived off free meals and plunder, accumulating vast wealth—enough to fund Konan's six hundred billion explosive tags in the original story.
"I… I can't accept this," Konan tried to return the money. But she stopped. This money wasn't just crucial for her, but for the Amegakure refugees and Akatsuki's survival. She bit her lip and produced a scroll.
"I can't return the money, but this scroll contains sealing jutsu from Nagato. It's from the destroyed Uzumaki clan."
Nagato's things?
Kai's eyebrows rose. Nagato, Akatsuki's leader, possessed powerful techniques, many linked to the Rinnegan, but some were highly desirable. Uzumaki sealing jutsu was incredibly powerful; otherwise, the Uzumaki wouldn't have been wiped out.
Kai opened the scroll. A playful smile appeared on his face.
"Konan, this is worth fifty million ryō. Keep the money."
Kakuzu, who'd been fuming, was stunned and rushed over. He'd never seen anything worth fifty million ryō.
