Chapter 51: Chapter 51 Unexpected gains
Whoosh!
Just as Satoru was enduring Anko Mitarashi's sermon-like torment, Hayama emerged from the shadowy forest path.
His hand, gripping a katana, saw the group chatting and, after observing the surroundings, roughly deduced that his teammates had finished their battle.
Clang!
He sheathed his katana back on his back.
"Captain is here," Satoru said.
Anko put her hands on her hips and stopped her chattering when she turned to see Hayama.
"Captain, are you injured?"
"I'm fine, what about you guys?
Where are the enemies?" Hayama looked around in confusion, not finding any enemy corpses, wondering if they had escaped.
This made him frown.
"This guy used Sealing Technique to put them away," Anko said, pointing at Satoru.
She was very impressed by this; although collecting the bodies just now seemed simple, that was a Sealing Technique, not something an ordinary person could learn.
Even she, a former disciple of Orochimaru, gave up after studying it for a while.
Even the mark on her neck was sealed with the help of the Third Hokage.
Satoru: "Captain, where is the body of your opponent?
I've already read the memories of the others, only your opponent is left."
"Sorry, the enemy was very strong, and the battle was too intense; he was dismembered, so the Mind Reading Technique probably won't work!" Hayama sighed.
The opponent was also a Ninja from a great nation, with extraordinary methods, and his newly created Vacuum Sword, when not controlled properly, directly tore him into eighteen pieces.
"I see, that's fine, I'll report the information I just gathered now," Satoru said.
The others listened intently.
"According to the memories I read, these people are indeed from Hidden Cloud Village, and they are two important small squads tasked with disrupting the trade route between the Land of Iron and the Land of Fire.
"The orders these people received were to ambush merchant caravans trading with the Land of Fire, and they've been doing it for some time.
"There are also two other elite squads, making a total of four elite teams operating. Based on the current situation, the enemy seems to have realised Konoha is preparing to counterattack and is making a final stand before returning to the Land of Lightning.
"Leaving a mess for Konoha."
Uchiha Itachi: "So, this attack might be their last?"
"That's possible."
"Then have we completed the mission given by the Third Hokage?" Anko Mitarashi asked excitedly.
This was an S-rank mission, and completing it meant a lot of money, which meant she could eat three-colored dango for a long time.
Completing it in a few days was simply perfect, absolutely flawless. If only this guy's mouth were as sweet as Itachi's.
She seemed to have completely forgotten that Itachi delivered the finishing blow.
"No, it could also be a trap, a feint, so we can't let our guard down. We still need to continue patrolling the border and send the information back to Konoha.
"This trade route is very important, we cannot be careless. If possible, Satoru, find the other two teams and kill them."
As Captain, Hayama displayed his steady side, showing no emotion towards the Ninjas of other nations.
"Understood. Let's clean up and go meet the captain of that caravan. We'll also show Konoha's strength and spread the word to reassure the Land of Iron's merchants," Satoru said.
Over the years, he had learned more than just Ninjutsu; even if not specialise, he had appropriately studied other things.
Such knowledge is crucial for a politician.
He wanted to be a competent subordinate, stable and secure, and he had to understand the intentions of those above him to solidify his position.
"Hmm, Satoru said it well. Let's talk to them first, then go pursue and kill the enemies from the other two squads," Hayama nodded.
Uchiha Itachi saw everything and his impression of Satoru rose again. He was indeed a Ninja praised by the Third Hokage for his Will of Fire.
He could always think of what was beneficial to Konoha.
He still had a long way to go.
...
"Sir, why don't we hurry up and leave? If those Konoha guys lose, we're dead," a guarA waited for a long time, listening to the occasional clashing of weapons from the forest, his mental pressure like an invisible hammer, slowly flattening him.
The other guards were the same; from the situation just now, their strength was insufficient to retreat unscathed from the enemy's assault.
Now was the best time.
The hairy-faced uncle frowned. What the guard said wasn't unreasonable, because even if they left, they wouldn't get far; the enemy's strength would surely catch up.
These guards were just afraid of death and wanted to escape.
He should have hired Konoha's people from the start. Look at them, four fighting more than a dozen, yet so bravely.
But what if Konoha...
Thump thump thump!
Just then, there was a commotion from the forest beside the road.
All the guards immediately grabbed their swords and looked nervously at the figures emerging from the shadows. When they saw the Konoha Ninja headbands, they all breathed a sigh of relief.
The hairy-faced uncle's eyes lit up. Since all four Konoha Ninjas had emerged, it meant the enemies had been repelled.
He jumped off the carriage and quickly went to meet them, a smile on his face as if greeting honoured guests: "Thank you, esteemed Konoha Ninjas, for dealing with these rogue bandits for us. We are truly grateful."
"It's nothing. These Kumogakure dared to cause trouble at the Land of Fire's border; they deserved to die. Rest assured, Konoha has already sent border troop reinforcements, and no one will dare to bother you again," Hayama said.
Kumogakure?
The hairy-faced man's expression turned very ugly upon hearing that. So it was those guys.
Damn Land of Lightning, to do such a thing.
He knew that many merchant guilds in the Land of Iron had a lot of dealings with the Land of Lightning, and now, to target Konoha, they were hitting them.
Upon returning, he must mobilise the merchant power of the Land of Iron to suppress the trade prices of the Land of Lightning and make them understand their place.
"Thank you. I will recommend hiring Konoha Ninjas to my counterparts in the Land of Iron; it's safe," the hairy-faced uncle didn't say anything about giving Konoha benefits, as that wouldn't fit his merchant identity.
Even so, Hayama's eyes lit up; he hadn't expected such an unexpected gain.
Satoru felt the same.
Hidden Villages are military mercenary organisations; 70% of their operating funds usually come from various factions' employment. Now that this uncle said this, it might bring income to Konoha.
If it happened, it meant they had accomplished another great deed, and then they could exchange for another Ninjutsu or something, adding to their growth.
Their objective achieved, with an unexpected gain, the four only chatted with the hairy-faced uncle for a while before bidding farewell and disappearing from their sight, going to track down the remaining two teams.
Whoosh whoosh!
"Phew, damn Konoha, if only they had come sooner." After the Konoha Ninjas left, the hairy-faced uncle looked at the dead people around him, wanting to cry but unable to, having suffered heavy losses.
He admired Konoha's strength, but that didn't mean he didn't resent them for coming too late.
It was just his merchant nature that he hadn't revealed it earlier.
