My Hitman System

Chapter 172: Campfire [3] (E)

Sensing everyone's gazes directly towards him, Jin couldn't help but feel conflicted.

When Shadow had asked the question, he had just planned to narrate William's backstory and how he ended up becoming a hitman after doing regular missions.

It was the best decision, but after hearing Specy's and Shadow's heartfelt recollection, Jin couldn't do that anymore.

He took a deep breath and started, "It was the months of winter and I was in fifth grade. In a cold, chilly morning, I pushed myself off the bed. Usually, my mother would come and wake me up, but that day she didn't.

Concerned, I went to her room only to find her still sleeping beside my father.

I shook them and called out to them, but they never answered. It was only when I rushed to my neighbours and asked for help that I got to know they had died.

Later, at the hospital, I found out that they had died of carbon monoxide poisoning because of the heater.

A lot happened after that, and I was forced to live in the slums. It was only a year ago that I found out that it wasn't an accident but a planned murder.

The perpetrators belonged to an pharmaceutical company named Zenith BioTech.

My goal is to get to the bottom of it, which would be followed by the destruction of Zenith BioTech."

Jin concluded as he stared into the flames. It was the most he could afford to share with these people whom he had started to trust.

"Alright then, Ice, now it's your turn," Specy clapped his hands to change the grim mood and said.

Just like Jin, Ice too felt conflicted about sharing her story, but after hearing everyone, she finally mustered up enough courage to open up.

"It would be a long story…you all really want to listen?" She asked for confirmation.

"Of course," Specy said.

Jin and Shadow nodded in acknowledgement.

Seeing this, Ice finally sighed and started.

"It's been six years since that incident. I had been married for four years then, and we had a three-year-old daughter.

My husband worked as a bank manager, and I was a kindergarten teacher.

It was difficult to keep up with the expenses, but life was good. The quality time which I spent with my family at night made everything else bearable.

One day, a fireworks festival was happening in the city. Our daughter desperately wanted to see it, so we had booked the tickets.

Unfortunately, I got sick at the last moment.

My husband said that it was alright and they would just spend time at home with me, but I was against that idea.

I wanted to fulfil my daughter's desires, so I forced my husband to change his mind.He finally agreed and went to the festival in the evening. They never returned back.

The next day, I found out that a thirty-five-year-old man had been murdered on the streets. I approached the police station and got a confirmation that it was my husband.

Grieving, I asked about my daughter, but they had seen no traces of her.

A month later, I was visited by two police officers. They showed me some pictures of a place in a dark underground hall.

It was huge, and there was a dark, goatlike figure at the end of that hall. Another picture had a large circle drawn on the floor, inside which a star was embedded.

I asked them why they were showing me such pictures.

It was at that moment, one of them brought out another picture in which many children were hanging upside down from chains. Their faces had been disfigured with a knife, and they all had deep, bloodied cuts on their necks.

I was visibly shaken at the sight. The police officer explained that they had recently found an abandoned underground hall which was made in the city's recently abandoned subway tunnel.

According to them, this was a place where several cultist rituals took place. The remains of the children they had found matched with the children that had gone missing within six months.

My daughter's DNA was also found among the several others.

Just thinking that my child had to suffer so much agony before her death made my skin crawl with anger. I demanded that perpetrators be hanged to death, if not worse, but the police just shook their heads.

They had no way of catching them. The place was completely clean of any evidence that could track the culprits. Soon after, the case was closed.

I, however, was adamant about finding the ones behind it. Three years, I devoted three complete years to examining all similar cases in the past and present and found an important link.

All those who got caught had links to Kaliam in one form or another. They either lived there, worked there, went for a vacation there once and so on.

It was almost common in all the cases, and thus I left for Kaliam. It was there that I started my journey as a killer, and while at it interrogated many people.

They were very tight-lipped, but there are always weak links. I finally got an opportunity to corner a wealthy individual there and got to know a lot about what was going on.

These cultist rituals were organised by a large group of people who were spread all over the world.

These rituals were their way of praying to the demons to help them amass as much wealth as possible and fulfil their desires.

The group was named Trion.

Like all organisations, Trion too had a head. It was led by the Six Stars, individuals who held the highest power in Kaliam and could be called its hidden leaders.

They controlled Kaliam's politicians from behind and let them do their bidding while completely remaining behind the scenes.

Before I could learn more about this, my tracks were discovered, and I had to escape from Kaliam. I understood that if I want to know more, then I have to get stronger.

Therefore, I'm still honing my skills to get stronger.

My goal is to find those six who have been controlling everything from behind and kill them just the way they killed all those children…just the way they killed my daughter!"

Ice's eyes had turned bloodshot, and she was breathing very heavily by the time she finished with her recollection.

Everyone grew silent thereafter and just stared at the dancing flames for the next couple of minutes.

"Say…how about we name our group?" Specy suggested all of a sudden.

"Name? Hmmm…well, it might be cool if we get to work together in the future. What have you thought?" Shadow asked.

"Since we all have our own share of tragedies which made us have these crazy goals, how about we call ourselves The Crazy Four?

I had just blurted it out of fun earlier, but after hearing everyone, I truly feel that it resonates with us all," Specy suggested.

"The Crazy Four, huh? Zed, what do you think?" Shadow asked Jin.

"Sounds good to me," Jin replied. The name had a certain ring to it.

"How about you, Ice?" Specy asked.

"I'm fine with it as well," Ice consented.

"Good! Then it's decided. We'll be called the crazy four from now on, the four who will soon turn the world upside down," He joked and raised the wooden skewer to the sky.

Jin, Shadow and Ice too heartily raised their skewers to the sky and chuckled.
