Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Return to 616
New York on Earth-700 experienced an unprecedented blackout. Almost all of the city's power had been siphoned off by Kingpin until Blond Peter stopped him. He notified the NYPD, and as a result, this universe's Sinister Six were all apprehended.
"Alchemy Company's stock is definitely going to plummet because of this. I hope Willie learns his lesson."
Blond Peter stood atop a distant building, filled with emotion. He smiled, looking at his two companions from other realities, and couldn't help but hug them, making both of them awkwardly want to leave.
"I have to go. I have new calculations for the canon events. But one conclusion I've already reached is that existing entities from other realities cannot replace their counterparts in the native universe. We can help you, but not replace you... though there are still some theoretical issues."
Miguel said this while setting up his return path to Earth-928, and at the same time, brought up Blond Peter's earlier idea about forming a Spider-Alliance.
"We can create a Spider-Alliance. I can modify the wristband's program and mass-produce them, but the problem is, if we need a base, then we need a safe universe where we can call the shots."
Miguel shrugged. He hadn't yet found a universe that could serve as a base. Both Peter and Blond Peter shrugged in response.
"Can you give me a wristband when you're done? It's still a hassle for me to travel now, and I tend to get lost and stuff."
"It's a little difficult." Miguel didn't completely object or refuse Peter's request. "You're from Universe 616. The reality barrier there is the thickest, and it's the center of the entire multiverse model. I'm not entirely sure if I can get through smoothly."
Peter Benjamin Parker froze for a full three seconds.
"Wait... what did you say my universe number was?"
"616, why?"
Miguel spoke while adjusting the wristband's data. Since he had a more convenient travel wristband, Miguel was responsible for sending the spider from Universe 42 back. He noticed Peter's absentmindedness and asked curiously.
Peter replied with a slight embarrassment, "It's nothing."
What was 616? It was the main Marvel Universe! Whether Sony tried to recreate a 616 and 1610 universe in Into the Spider-Verse, or the MCU tried to open a brand new multiverse with Loki, Marvel Comics had rejected them.
All the universes in the former were marked with a "B"; the middle-aged Spider-Man came from Universe 616B, and the protagonist Miles's universe became 1610B. The MCU's designation as Earth-616 of another multiverse was denied by a TVA comic.
So, Peter was very surprised when he heard that, then realized that not only was he in the Marvel universe, but it was a brand new Marvel Multiverse. And he was the Spider-Man of the main universe within this new multiverse.
He didn't even know if this counted as good news.
However, Miguel didn't say much. He just left with the spider from Universe 42. He would take this spider to that universe's Miles. Universe 42 would have its own Spider-Man.
And Peter had to go back too. After bidding farewell to Blond Peter, he tore open a spatial rift and left.
Watching the two Spider-Men leave his universe in different ways, Blond Peter scratched the back of his head.
"Sometimes I really wish I could be that cool too..."
Back in the space between multiverses, Peter now understood what Madame Web meant. He could feel a very distinct, similar presence moving across a giant web, where each strand represented a universe. He hadn't felt it as clearly during his last visit, but this time, he seemed to truly understand that his universe was in a very central position.
However, it didn't seem to be the exact center of the entire web structure. Miguel said his 616 universe was the center of the multiverse, but Peter didn't know from what perspective.
He clearly found the strand that resonated with him, and then dove straight in.
On the other side, Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards, who had been waiting for seven hours, saw the multiverse traverser undergo drastic energy changes. With anticipation, he saw a spatial rift tear open, revealing Peter, who then climbed out and took off his mask.
"Welcome back, Spider-Man. You were gone for seven hours... but according to your wristband's information, you spent seven days in the other universe. So, there truly are time dilation changes between different multiverses, or perhaps traversing the multiverse itself causes a temporal misalignment..."
Seven hours? Great, he wouldn't miss any classes. That was good news.
Peter looked around. The three Avenger scientists were gone, seemingly having left ahead of time. He looked at Cindy, who was sitting quietly to the side, reading.
"Thank you for your trouble, and thank you."
"...?" Cindy looked at Peter strangely. She hadn't done anything, so she didn't know why she was being thanked for her "trouble."
"Spider-Man, if possible, perhaps we could conduct some more detailed examinations..."
Reed Richards turned his head excitedly. Peter sighed. "No problem, Professor Richards. Can you make it quick? I'm pretty tired."
After another three hours, Peter, having finished his examinations, went home. Meanwhile, an extremely excited Reed Richards was still talking.
"This is amazing. Based on this data, perhaps I can send signals across the multiverse... Oh, they're already gone."
He looked at the empty laboratory, shrugged, then input the data into the computer and began sending messages throughout the multiverse. If someone could receive and understand them, then communication between multiverses might be established.
Unexpectedly, within mere seconds of sending his message, someone received it and sent back a similar signal. Furthermore, the other party very kindly introduced themselves.
It was Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards, from another Earth.
"Indeed, I knew it! Every version of me in every multiverse yearns for communication with each other!"
It all came from a bolt of lightning in the rolling black clouds.
On Earth-2149, Reed Richards ended the communication. He turned his head; his skull was rotted, his lips inexplicably gone, revealing sharp fangs, and his eyes were only whites.
He stood beside this Earth's destined-to-be-unfinished multiverse traverser, closed the communication device, and chuckled as he looked at his family. The other members of the Fantastic Four also emitted a terrible stench of decaying flesh.
"While others are still trying to find a bit of pitiful raw meat from every nook and cranny, they don't know what we've discovered."
Zombie Reed licked the corner of his mouth. While communicating with his 616 counterpart, he could constantly smell the nonexistent aroma of fresh meat.
"An Earth full of fresh meat, an Earth that will belong only to us!"
Outside the dilapidated Baxter Building, New York was in chaos. The superheroes people once revered were now scattered across the streets, searching for any living thing they could find, devouring every possible piece of fresh meat.
The immense stench of blood seemed to have overwhelmed the world itself. The unchanging blood-red sunset enveloped New York City, signifying that this Earth had become a pure living hell.
