Chapter 34: Chapter 34

A mother's decision

A few moments later, a "ding" from Samantha's phone signaled a message from Jeff. He had just opened her email. "Okay, Sam, I saw the email and this is really good. Can I call you?" he wrote.

Samantha got up, walked out to the back porch, and called him right away. He answered in just two rings, and from the background noise, it sounded like he was in his office.

"Hey, Sam," Jeff said.

"Hey, did you see my DNA test results and the last message from him?" Samantha asked.

"Yeah, they can really help the case that's already in progress," Jeff replied.

"What do you mean?" Samantha asked, confused.

"The day after Mason and I visited you in the hospital, Mason brought Ryan to meet me after work. We met at a restaurant on the other side of town. I'm building a case with Ryan based on his own documentation to take that guy down. I can tell you that Ryan had suspected their relationship for a long time but couldn't do anything because he lacked solid proof until you gave it to him. I need you not to do anything for now; the file you gave me will be a huge help with this," Jeff explained.

"Oh? Can you tell me the details of the case?" Samantha asked.

"Sorry, I can't tell you, but trust me, your cases are connected. You don't need to do anything for now unless we need you later," Jeff said.

"Hmm... alright," Samantha replied, a little annoyed that things weren't going according to her plan.

After the call, Samantha went back inside. She saw Sarah and Carmen standing at the window, peeking outside. She joined them. They could hear a loud argument from across the street. Christina, was yelling at Maxwell, who was leaving the porch with a duffel bag. Maxwell walked to his car, his face pale and scared, as if he was running from something, while his mother, Christina, looked panicked and seemed to be demanding an explanation.

"Hmm... maybe I can use this situation," Samantha thought to herself.

Without hesitation, Samantha grabbed her phone and quickly walked past Sarah and Carmen, who turned to look at her.

"Hey, big sis?" Sarah asked.

"Samantha, what are you doing?" Carmen asked.

Samantha didn't answer. She opened the door, went outside, and crossed the street. Sarah and Carmen followed behind her. As she walked, Samantha opened her skills screen and activated her Manipulation and Intimidation skills. "BAM!" Samantha slammed her hand on the hood of Maxwell's car, making him turn around. His face went even paler when he saw her. Without a moment's delay, Samantha showed him the DNA test results on her phone.

"The baby I'm carrying is yours!" Samantha yelled.

Christina's face changed completely. She looked wobbly and clutched her chest as if she'd just had a sudden heart attack. Maxwell's face turned even whiter as he read the 99.99% probability that he was the father of Samantha's baby. To make things worse, Sarah and Carmen were now standing behind Samantha, arms crossed, glaring at Maxwell. Maxwell finally got a grip and grabbed Samantha's hand.

"Look, I'm not the only guy with the name Maxwell. It could be someone else. Please don't just accuse me, and I have no idea what you're talking about," Maxwell stammered, sounding totally unconvincing.

"Seriously? Who else? You shameless, rude man! Men always take advantage of women and push them around!" Sarah yelled, based on her own past experiences.

"Exactly! If you can't be responsible, don't trick people then use your dick on them! How many victims have you had, huh? This is sexual abuse and harassment!" Carmen shouted.

"Let go of me!" Samantha yelled, yanking her hand.

"I won't let go until you promise you won't accuse me again," Maxwell threatened, tightening his grip.

"Okay," Samantha replied with a smile.

"THWACK!" Samantha kicked Maxwell's leg and twisted his arm. His body spun and "BUMP!" he fell flat on his back. His face showed that the wind had been knocked out of him from the hard fall. "AHHHHHH!" Christina screamed and ran over to them. Samantha was ready for Christina to start yelling and defending Maxwell, but instead, Christina grabbed Samantha's free hand and held it with her two own hands.

"Are you okay, sweetie?" Christina asked, looking very worried.

"Uh... oh... um... I'm fine, Auntie," Samantha answered nervously, realizing she'd misjudged the situation.

"Can you tell me everything? I had no idea what Max has been doing to you. Please tell me all of it, I need to know," Christina said.

"Oh... okay, Auntie," Samantha replied.

"M-mom..." Maxwell said, still lying on his back.

"Be quiet. Your father in heaven would be so disappointed in you. I'll decide what to do with you after I hear Samantha's story," Christina said coldly. Then she looked at Samantha, Sarah, and Carmen. "Everyone, come inside. We'll talk inside."

Samantha, Sarah, and Carmen walked into the house with Christina. As they sat in the living room, Samantha saw the many photos and religious symbols on the walls and realized Christina was a very religious woman. After Christina came back with drinks, Samantha began to tell her everything, including the details from Melissa's memories and the live streaming Maxwell did at her house.

Christina's face, which had been neutral at first, became horrified and disbelieving, then intensely angry and disappointed. Finally, she looked so ashamed she bowed her head, unable to look Samantha, Sarah, or Carmen in the eye.

Samantha's story was very convincing, and she showed Christina the evidence: photos of the live stream, the DNA test results, and Maxwell's Jessica's Instagram accounts. This crushed Christina. She had no idea what her son was doing, believing him to be a good, devout person.

"My husband and I never raised him to be like this... I'm so sorry, sweetie," Christina said, sobbing, her voice a faint whisper from the shock.

"It's not your fault, Auntie. Max is an adult. He chose did this all on his own," Samantha said.

"Um... yeah, ma'am, you don't have to feel guilty," Carmen added.

"On behalf of my family, I am truly sorry. To all three of you, especially you, sweetie," Christina mumbled to Samantha, Sarah, and Carmen.

"Thank you for the apology, Auntie, but this really isn't your fault," Samantha said.

"SCREEECH!" "VROOOM!" They heard a car back out of the driveway and speed away outside. Christina, Samantha, Sarah, and Carmen looked out.

"He's gone," Sarah said.

"Yeah, he ran away," Carmen added.

"Let him. I'm changing the locks, and he won't be able to come back here. He has desecrated this house, a house my late husband, who died of cancer 10 years ago, left to me. All this time, I thought the women who came here were here for training, because Maxwell's job is personal training, but... he was using my basement as a place for prostitution and whatever he's done in that video," Christina said, looking so angry her hands were clenched into tight fists.

Hearing Christina's firm and serious words, Samantha, Sarah, and Carmen looked at each other. Then all three stood up and moved to sit next to her, embracing Christina, who looked completely shattered after finding out what her son had been doing all this time.
