Chapter 35: Chapter 35

Mysterious man.

After she calmed down, Christina suddenly turned to Samantha and placed a hand on her stomach. Samantha, of course, was surprised.

"So, you're carrying my grandchild, sweetie," Christina said with a sad smile, her face showing this was not how she wanted to become a grandmother.

"Oh... um... that's right, Auntie," Samantha replied with an awkward smile. She hadn't even thought about the baby being Christina's grandchild.

"Hmm, that's true," Carmen chimed in.

"Yeah, Auntie, the baby in Samantha's tummy is your grandchild," Sarah added.

Samantha turned to look at Sarah and Carmen, who were smiling widely at her as if to say, "Just let her be happy; don't make it awkward." Samantha smiled back, as if to say, "I know." Then Christina let go of her and hugged Samantha, who was feeling a bit awkward, while talking in her head.

"Hey, Hades, what if I change my baby's DNA right now? That way, my baby won't have anything to do with her, right?" Samantha asked.

[There will still be a connection, Sir. She's still your child's grandmother, and you can't run from this, even if I change the DNA.]

"Hmm, I see. Fine. Just make sure there's no connection to that bastard Maxwell."

[Understood. I will do it now... It is done. You are now a hermaphrodite human who can have children with yourself and have both genders.]

"Whatever," Samantha replied sourly.

Christina released her hug and held Samantha's hands with both of hers, observing her face. She could tell Samantha was restless, even with her polite smile. "Don't worry, sweetie, I'm not going to ask you to marry Max, but please allow me to be a part of your and my grandchild's life," Christina said with a smile.

"Yes, Auntie. Thank you," Samantha replied.

They began to talk about the future. Christina promised to help Samantha through her pregnancy and to take care of the baby when it was born if Samantha was busy with work, just like a grandmother ready to welcome her grandchild. Samantha smiled, though she still felt a little uncomfortable. Sarah and Carmen kept encouraging Samantha not to make things awkward, because they relieved to see Christina, who had been shattered moments before, now starting to recover and feel positive like usual.

After they finished talking, Christina suddenly looked out the window towards the street when a car passed the road in front her house. Sarah and Carmen also looked outside. Samantha, who was watching them, felt a little strange.

"What's wrong, Auntie?" Samantha asked, curious.

"Sometimes I see someone driving back and forth in front of your house, sweetie," Christina said.

"That's right, big sis. That's also why I sometimes ask Carmen to stay the night," Sarah added.

"Sarah told me about it, but I just thought it was a regular passerby until I heard from you, Auntie," Carmen said, turning to look at Christina.

"What exactly is going on?" Samantha asked.

"About a week ago, long before you came home from the hospital, a black car would often stop on the side of the road right in front of our house at night. At first, I thought it was just someone parking, but doing it every day is weird. Then sometimes during the day, a man would walk by, looking over at our house, and... it happened pretty often," Sarah said.

"Yeah, Sarah already told me everything," Carmen replied.

"But then I found out that Christina was also watching him, and when she said she didn't know the man because he didn't live here, I started inviting Carmen to stay over," Sarah said.

"That's true, sweetie. At first, I also thought the man was a guest of one of the neighbors because my son often brought guests home too, but when I saw him walking by on foot during the day and parking his car at the end of the street almost every day, I got a little suspicious. And it seems he knows I'm suspicious, because he didn't pass by today, or because today is right when you came home from the hospital," Christina said.

"Hmm, I see," Samantha mumbled, thinking.

"Five days ago in the afternoon, he even stopped in front of the house, big sis, and seemed to be writing something down. I happened to see him because I had just come home from campus," Sarah added.

"Why didn't you tell me when I was at the hospital?" Samantha asked.

"I didn't want to worry you because you were still recovering," Sarah replied.

"Sarah, just tell her everything," Carmen said, placing a hand on Sarah's shoulder.

"Okay," Sarah said. She then shared her suspicions that the man was an associate of Derek's, sent to follow her after their campus encounter, which she had told Samantha about. She had told Carmen everything because she was starting to get scared.

"Okay, I get it, and I don't blame you. I'll install some security cameras at the house later," Samantha said.

"I'll help keep an eye out from across the street, too," Christina added.

"Thanks, Samantha, Christina, Carmen," Sarah said, bowing her head.

"You're welcome," Samantha replied.

"Don't worry, Sarah sweetie. We're family now, not just neighbors," Christina said, reaching out and holding Sarah's hand.

After that, since it was late afternoon and turning to evening, Christina invited them to have dinner at her house, then they all go to the dining room. She had made lasagna and brought it to the table. As they ate, Samantha thought and spoke in her head.

"Hades, can you do something about this?" Samantha asked.

[I can investigate who that man is to confirm his identity.]

"Okay, please help me with that. I'm worried he might have a connection to my family, especially the person once I called Dad," Samantha replied.

[Hmm.]

"What?" Samantha asked.

[It appears he does have a connection to your family, Sir, but his target isn't Sarah.]

"Huh... not Sarah? Then who?" Samantha asked.

[You.]

"Huh... me?" Samantha asked.

[The man also showed up at the hospital, but you didn't notice him.]

"Really?" Samantha asked.

[I will give you the details later after I find out his motive and who sent him. Please be patient, Sir.]

"Okay, I get it. Please help me," Samantha said.

[Leave it to me.]

Suddenly, Christina, who was sitting next to Samantha, held her hand, making Samantha flinched a little and turned to see her face.

"Sweetie, we're talking about your baby shower. I'm thinking of inviting all my friends and church friends. Not right now, of course—we'll do it when you're seven or eight months along, but we should start planning it now," said Christina, full of grandmother energy.

"A baby shower?" Samantha asked, surprised.

Samantha glanced at Sarah and Carmen, who were smiling widely. Their eyes told her, "Just go with it and nod. Don't make things awkward," so Samantha stayed silent and nodded with a big polite smile.

[Good for you, Sir.]

"Shut up," Samantha replied in her head.
