Chapter 29: Chapter 29
"Blip... blip... blip," the EKG machine hummed in the emergency room. "Uwaaaah!" Samantha jolted awake and sat straight up. "Ow!" She winced, feeling a sharp pain in her arm. There was a gunshot wound on the back of her arm, bandaged but still bleeding.
"Huh... why'd I get shot and... it hurts," Samantha mumbled to herself.
Before she could fully grasp what happened, "Sis... why are you up?" Samantha looked over to see Sarah, who'd been sitting next to her, stand up and gently push her back down onto the bed. Samantha watched Sarah busy herself, fixing her blanket and clothes.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" Samantha asked.
"A police officer came to our home and told me you'd been shot and were at the hospital, right when I got back. So I came straight here with the police," Sarah replied.
"Oh, I see," Samantha said.
"Swoosh," the curtain to the emergency room bay opened. Samantha looked over to see Carmen and her husband walk in and stand beside her. Samantha noticed Carmen's husband was big and muscular, still wearing his construction helmet and protective gear.
"Are you okay, Samantha? Thank you for saving me!" Carmen cried, immediately grabbing Samantha's hand.
"Yeah, I'm fine. What happened?" Samantha replied, confused.
Carmen, sobbing, explained that one of the bank robbers' accomplices started shooting at the police when they came out, and Samantha had shielded her, getting shot in the arm and passing out. After the police managed to catch the guy, paramedics came out of the ambulance, helped Samantha, and brought her to the hospital.
"I rode in the ambulance with you, Samantha. Then, once we got here, I called my husband," Carmen said.
"Thank you for saving my wife, Samantha. My name is Billy, but just call me Bill," Bill said.
"Oh, hi Bill... Carmen's husband," Samantha greeted Bill.
"Dad's coming soon, Sis," Sarah said.
"What? Why? I'm fine... ouch... ugh," Samantha said, moving and feeling a jolt of pain in her arm.
"Of course, he's coming to visit you, and clearly you're not fine!" Sarah retorted, annoyed.
"I-I'm sorry," Samantha stammered, seeing Sarah's angry pout.
"You're always so reckless! I already heard the story from a SWAT team member named Alex, who happened to help bring you here. What you did was heroic, but it was incredibly dangerous," Sarah lectured Samantha.
"She's right, Samantha. Like I said, you're really crazy!" Carmen added.
"Come on, what matters is she's safe, right?" Bill chimed in.
"Exactly! The important thing is I'm safe, haha," Samantha added.
"Please don't laugh, Sis, it's not funny at all," Sarah replied angrily.
"I-I'm sorry," Samantha mumbled.
"Slide," the curtain opened again. A nurse and a doctor came in to do an examination since Samantha was awake. They asked Sarah, Carmen, and Billy to wait outside. After that, the doctor asked Samantha a few questions and started re-examining the wound on her arm. When the nurse opened the bandage and the doctor saw the wound on her arm,
"Phew... good thing I didn't die," Samantha mumbled in her head.
[.....]
"Are you going to say something, Hades? Why are you quiet?" Samantha asked.

"Huh... wait... what... my death count is 5?" Samantha asked.
[You were shot, killed, brought back to life. I transferred the wound to your arm and altered the memories of those who saw you get shot and killed. That is the true story, Sir.]
"Haaaaaaah... how... how could that happen?" Samantha asked, starting to tremble.
[Because you didn't want to wait 30 minutes.]
"Aaaaaaaaaah... you're seriously insane! What about my baby?" Samantha asked, instinctively clutching her stomach.
[Your baby is safe. I protected it.]
Samantha, trembling and starting to break out in a cold sweat, her face showing a mix of shock, panic, and deep fear in just three seconds, turned to look at the doctor who was treating her arm. She immediately turned back and grabbed the doctor's arm.
"Doctor, what about my baby, doc?" Samantha asked in a panic.
"Calm down, ma'am, your pregnancy is safe, no need to worry," the doctor calmly replied.
"Thank goodness," Samantha said, rubbing her stomach.
"Please remember next time, you are pregnant. Please be careful in the future," the doctor advised.
But Samantha didn't hear the doctor's advice. Her mind was recovering, and she remembered what truly happened before Hades altered it. She was really holding back from screaming and unleashing her emotions, even though her face had suddenly turned pale. "Ssssh," Samantha winced as the doctor started re-bandaging her arm with new gauze. Suddenly, the nurse next to her, who saw Samantha's face looking very scared mixed with stress and her trembling body, put a hand on her shoulder. Samantha flinched. The nurse removed her hand.
"Are you alright, ma'am?" the nurse asked, concerned.
"N-no... I'm fine... th-thank you," Samantha replied, turning to look at the nurse and forcing a smile.
The nurse nodded, then went to get something because the doctor had asked for her help.
"How are you feeling, ma'am? I understand you've just been through something terrible," the doctor said, being polite without touching Samantha because he saw her shivering.
"I-I'm fine, doc... (Ugh, I can't stop trembling)," Samantha said.
"Good, you're quite strong and brave. I've heard the story from the police and the SWAT team who helped bring you here. Though reckless, you saved a lot of people," the doctor said, smiling as he took off his mask.
"Th-thank you, doc," Samantha replied, forcing a smile.
"Alright, please rest. I'll be back to check your wound again in two hours," the doctor said, standing up.
"Thank you, doc," Samantha replied.
After the doctor left, Sarah, Carmen, Billy, and Richard, who seemed to have just arrived, came in to see Samantha, who was hugging her trembling body and looking down, crying. Sarah, seeing Samantha sitting on her bed, trembling, immediately moved to her other side which her arm not wounded and pulled Samantha's head to rest on her chest.
"It's okay, Sis... it's okay," Sarah said.
"Hic... hic... hic... thank you, Sarah," Samantha replied.
Carmen, Billy, and Richard watched Samantha cry. They didn't say anything. Carmen stepped forward and held Samantha's hand, while Richard moved closer to Billy. Samantha looked at Sarah, Carmen, Billy, and Richard, who were now with her. Her heart felt a little calmer than before. She paused for a moment and felt a new, warm feeling emerge in her chest then she began to stop trembling. She glanced at their faces one by one.
[Thank goodness, Sir. Now you have a family.]
"You're right, Hades... even if we're not blood-related... and even if I just met them... they're my family, I hope I'm not overthinking it, thinking of them as my family," Samantha said.
[No, you're not overthinking about that. I know you've never felt this sensation before.]
"Yeah, besides Grandma... no one else has always been there for me. Right now, they're here for me... and you too, Hades... you're my family, even if you're annoying and keep giving me crazy, stressful stuff to deal with... thanks for protecting my baby," Samantha said, tearing up.
[....Thank you, Sir. Glad to hear th at.]
