DC Apostle in the Marvel Universe

Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Past

As Russell and Heather sat in awkward silence, unsure of what to say, the door to the reception room was violently smashed open. A two-meter-tall green mini-Hulk, resembling a beast, charged in.

Allen, who had just burst into the room, was about to say something when he immediately noticed Heather sitting on the sofa, her face flushed red.

And not far away stood Russell, still holding a blanket.

"I... I didn't see anything, I don't know anything!"

With that, Allen left the reception room even faster than he had entered.

Before leaving, he had intended to close the door, but the door he had smashed a moment ago offered no such courtesy.

So, under Russell's watchful gaze, Allen tiptoed out like a thief.

"What kind of mess is this?"

Seeing Allen's reaction, Russell knew the misunderstanding was only getting worse.

"If you're tired, go ahead and rest some more. I'll go find the doctor and discuss our departure."

After glancing at the blanket in his hands, Russell hesitated for a few seconds, but eventually walked over to Heather and placed the blanket in her hands.

Once he finished, Russell left without looking back.

'Stay calm. I'm a transmigrator. I mustn't embarrass the countless transmigrators who came before me...'

'What kind of situation hasn't a transmigrator seen before? This can't scare me.'

Russell didn't know why these strange thoughts were popping into his head, nor did he notice that behind him, Heather was watching him leave with a gentle smile.

A smile that could topple cities and kingdoms.

If Russell had seen Heather's expression at that moment, the ancient saying would surely have come to mind...

'Sometimes, transmigration isn't so bad, is it?'

On his way to find Dr. Wilson, Russell ran into the somewhat unreliable Allen again.

Allen had already reverted to his normal human form.

When he saw Russell approaching, he gave a knowing smile and began to say, "I really didn't mean to. I didn't expect Heather to be sleeping with you–"

But before he could finish, Russell smacked him on the head, cutting him off.

Allen then quickly corrected himself, "No, I mean I didn't expect you two to be sleeping in the same room!"

Realizing he was digging himself deeper, he tried to explain, "Wait, no, I mean..."

Russell cut him off, "It's not what you think. She just saw I was asleep and decided to give me a blanket."

"Really? But from what I know, she's never done that for anyone else!"

Hearing this, Russell recalled that Allen and Heather were from the same place.

After his body was enhanced, Russell's memory had also improved significantly, so he quickly recalled the files he had seen before.

According to the files, Allen and Heather were from the same city, and they shared the last name, Brown. They even seemed to be somewhat related...

"Are you two related?" he asked.

Allen thought about it seriously, though he wasn't entirely sure, "Sort of... Distantly, though. Our great-grandfathers were brothers, so she's technically my cousin..."

"I see... Then, don't you want to go back home? Following me isn't a great choice. It's a life-threatening endeavor..." Russell pointed out.

"What's there to go back to? All our family members are gone. There's no one left to go back to." Allen said nonchalantly.

Hearing this, Russell was taken aback. The files Hydra provided hadn't mentioned this, "My apologies then, I shouldn't have brought that up."

"It's fine. It's been so many years, and both Heather and I are used to it," Allen then began to tell Russell about their past.

His parents had died in a car accident, while Heather's parents had passed away from illness.

Two families with a blood connection had both faced major tragedies.

So, Allen and Heather had ended up living together, supporting each other, only to be captured and turned into test subjects.

At this point, Allen's expression turned uncharacteristically serious, "Don't let her tough exterior fool you. She really needs someone to protect her."

"I see... too bad her cousin isn't much help with that..." Russell muttered, instantly breaking Allen's serious demeanor.

After a night of hard work, Dr. Wilson and his assistants had finally packed everything they needed to take with them, filling five trucks.

If there had been more trucks in the base, Dr. Wilson might have tried to pack up the entire lab.

But in the end, he had to abandon that tempting idea and only take the most valuable and compact equipment.

When Russell and Allen found Dr. Wilson, he was in the base's main control room, performing the final data deletion.

Noticing their arrival, the doctor handed Russell a list of the people who had decided to leave with them.

Out of 59 researchers, only 16 were willing to go, less than a third.

On the other hand, more than half of the soldiers were willing to leave... 21 out of 32.

The doctor knew Russell would want background information on these people, so he had attached detailed profiles of each person to the list.

As Russell had expected, most of the 37 people willing to leave had few family ties.

Some, like Allen and Heather, had lost all their family members.

So out of 91 people, 37 were willing to leave. Russell was actually quite satisfied with this ratio.

After all, if Hydra's walls were easy to breach, they wouldn't be a worthy opponent for S.H.I.E.L.D.

"Tranquilizers will be distributed when we leave, but there's something you need to handle now," After destroying all the data, Dr. Wilson approached Russell and pointed to the main control room's server, "Use your heat vision to completely destroy the control room."

"But how will we leave the base?" Allen asked curiously.

"I've set the base doors to manual override. And even if that fails, we have you two. A mere door won't stop you..."

While the doctor was still explaining, Russell's eyes were already emitting intense heat rays, completely melting the server and other equipment in the control room...
