Chapter 23: Chapter 23: On the Eve of Departure
After finalizing the secret communication method with Russell, Jasper quietly left the base and began his journey back to the HYDRA headquarters to start his life as a spy.
Before leaving, Jasper specifically reminded Russell of a few things...
Although the researchers and soldiers in the base didn't pose much of a threat, it was still important not to let their guard down.
There was always a chance that someone among them might be willing to risk their life for a shot at success, so caution was essential.
Finally, Jasper seriously reminded Russell to destroy all data in the base before leaving, especially the surveillance data that covered the entire facility.
Russell understood Jasper's concerns. After all, Jasper was about to return to headquarters as a spy, so there was no such thing as being too careful.
After Jasper quietly left the base, Dr. Wilson, who had finished processing all the research data, arrived in the reception room.
"All the research data has been processed. As soon as the new base is established, we can immediately restart the Abomination Project." Said the doctor.
For Dr. Wilson, the Abomination Project had become his most important research endeavor. No matter what the future held, he had no intention of giving up on it.
"Did you upload the data on the third-generation Abomination soldiers to headquarters before?"
After his encounter with the mutated Jack, Russell knew that Dr. Wilson was just one step away from creating a true Abomination.
Although Dr. Wilson was one of Hydra's top biologists, he wasn't the only one.
Otherwise, Hydra wouldn't have handed the new Extremis Soldier Project to someone else.
"Don't worry about that. The data on the third-generation Abomination soldiers is only backed up here. No one else knows about it."
Dr. Wilson was well aware of Russell's concerns, and he shared them.
If Hydra headquarters obtained the data on the third-generation Abomination soldiers, they might be able to create a true Abomination even without Dr. Wilson's assistance.
The third-generation Abomination soldiers were already very close to the original Abomination. With a bit more progress, they might even reach the level of the Hulk.
So if Hydra got their hands on the data, Russell wouldn't just be facing one mutated Jack, he'd be up against an entire army of Abominations.
"Oh, by the way, people have been coming to report to me since earlier..." Before leaving, Dr. Wilson turned around and said this to Russell.
Russell wasn't surprised by this outcome.
Hydra members were human, and humans always had their own needs.
So it was perfectly normal for some to leave Hydra for better pay or other reasons.
Not every Hydra member was interested in the goal of world domination.
For most Hydra members, joining Hydra was just a job. If they weren't happy or wanted better treatment, switching sides was a natural choice.
Although the cost of switching sides might be a bit high...
After Dr. Wilson left the reception room, Russell leaned back on the sofa, closed his eyes, and soon fell into a deep sleep.
Since crossing over, Russell had hardly had a good night's sleep.
The immense pressure which he couldn't share with anyone often woke him up in the middle of the night, leaving him unable to fall back asleep.
'From being just an ordinary person, how did I end up crossing over like this?'
Although this was also Earth, inhabited by the same humans, it wasn't the world he was familiar with.
In his original world, he didn't have to worry about being killed or how to deal with a global villain organization.
When Russell opened his eyes again, he found a thin blanket draped over him.
On the sofa across from him lay a young woman with flawless looks and figure.
Glancing at the clock on the wall, Russell realized he had slept for over nine hours without a hint of alertness.
This discovery shocked him.
Thankfully, this was the base, and there was no danger here.
Otherwise, in his previous state of sleep, anyone could have posed a lethal threat to him.
As if sensing Russell's awakening, Heather, lying on the sofa, groggily sat up and opened her clear, light blue eyes.
"Morning." Seeing Heather wake up, Russell greeted her.
Although it was barely past six and still some time before sunrise, it could still be considered morning.
But Russell never expected that his casual 'morning' would trigger a frantic scream from Heather.
"Ah!!! Why are you here!!!"
Her high-pitched scream was like a sonic weapon, violently assaulting Russell's eardrums.
Before he could respond, Heather, in a state of panic, grabbed the table in front of her and hurled it at Russell.
Faced with this inexplicable attack, Russell instinctively reacted, leaping lightly to avoid the table.
Although Russell dodged it easily, the table didn't stop. It slammed into the wall of the reception room, shattering into pieces with a loud crash.
"Heather, what are you doing? Calm down!"
Even though he wasn't hit, having a table thrown at him just after waking up was enough to ruin his mood.
Only now did Heather fully wake up, her cheeks instantly turning red as she lowered her head and spoke weakly, "Sorry, I thought..."
"I really can't sleep in the same room as you anymore. It's too dangerous!" Russell said with lingering fear, but after he spoke, he noticed Heather's face turning even redder.
Seeing Heather's reaction, Russell immediately realized the ambiguity in his words.
Still, 'Weren't American girls supposed to be open-minded? Why was she such an easily blushing mess?'
"It's not what you're thinking. I mean..." Russell wanted to explain, but he found it hard to do so without making things even more awkward.
To be honest, Heather was one of the most beautiful women Russell had ever met... her looks, figure, and demeanor were all top-notch, even surpassing some celebrities he had seen.
So he couldn't understand why Heather was so shy.
The more beautiful a girl is, the more confident she should be, that was the conclusion he had drawn before.
But now, Heather seemed to be overturning that conclusion...
