Chapter 9: Ch 9 : Nightmare_2
"Dr. Evelon Shelby and our team tried everything to find a cure for the Z-Virus, It overpowered all our efforts with terrifying speed. The virus was beyond our knowledge, leaving us baffled.
Then Dr. Shelby informed the government, and the TARCIA military was ordered to round up all infected individuals and eliminate them secretly. We thought the virus was eradicated, but yesterday, twenty patients were admitted with the same virus, their condition far worse than the earlier cases.
Dr. Shelby quarantined them in a ward here, and only Nurse Lice and I knew about it," Dr. Rosze explained in detail.
Her words left everyone stunned, their mouths agape in shock, unable to believe what they'd just heard. A heavy silence fell over the group.
"You kept something this serious from us?" Dylon broke the silence, his anger flaring at Dr. Shelby and Rosze, who worked alongside them yet hid such a dangerous secret.
"If we had told you, the Z-Virus news would've spread among the public, shattering TARCIA's years of peace. People would've panicked and lived in fear," Rosze explained, defending their secrecy.
"Hah! You Shelby siblings are something else, Dr. Rosze Shelby. Do you think if you'd told us, one of us would've run to the public and exposed it?" Dylon's anger didn't subside.
He had always been jealous of Evelon Shelby. Both he and Evelyn graduated from the same university, but Evelon found success quickly while Dylon struggled. By the time Dylon achieved recognition, Evelyn had already made a name in the medical world, forcing Dylon to work under him, feeling humiliated.
And when Evelon's sister, Rosze, appeared as his senior, Dylon's fury and jealousy grew. He believed the Shelby siblings thought themselves superior, keeping top secrets like this.
"Yes, and the President himself ordered it to remain top secret. If I'd told any of you, it wouldn't have stayed secret—it would've reached the public," Rosze said, meeting Dylon's eyes, her voice firm despite his hateful glare.
"This bitch…" Dylon muttered, her response provoking him further. He lunged to grab her throat again, but Dr. Bigbelly intervened.
"That's enough, Dr. Dylon!" Bigbelly snapped.
"Tch!" Dylon pulled his hand back.
"So, Dr. Rosze Shelby, have you found a cure for this Z-Virus?" Bigbelly asked seriously, stepping forward. He was also upset about the secrecy but knew Rosze was right—public knowledge would've caused chaos.
"No, Dr. Bigbelly… its structure is so complex that our knowledge and technology couldn't crack it. All we met was failure," Rosze said, her face showing clear frustration.
"So this unknown Z-Virus is turning people into monsters," the group realized, fear spreading among them.
"W-What do we do now?" a lady doctor asked, terrified by the lack of a cure.
"We'll inform the city police," one suggested.
"Yeah, that's right. They'll shoot those monsters," another said, a flicker of confidence returning.
"Kyyhhhhhhaaaa… help… arghhhh… arghhahab…"
Agonizing screams echoed through the hospital.
"Shit… those monsters are attacking the other patients and staff," a doctor said, terrified by the screams.
There were only ten people in the canteen: Rosze, Lice, Dylon, Bigbelly, and six others.
City Hospital, with 25 floors, had ten doctors per floor—250 total, from juniors to seniors. Rosze and the others were on the second floor, where the twenty infected were quarantined.
"W-We're all going to die," Dr. Torcose said, losing hope.
"We won't die, Dr. Torcose. The city police will save us. We just need to hold on a bit," Dylon reassured, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Ahhhhhhhh… kyaaaaaa… someone save me… urggghh!" More screams came, this time from the third floor.
"Y-You're joking, right? They're moving upstairs, killing everyone!" Bigbelly said, his hefty frame trembling with fear.
Ring… ring…
Rosze dialed the city police station. After a few seconds, the call connected.
"Hello, this is SKEDAN City Police," a man's voice answered.
"This is Dr. Rosze from City Hospital. We need urgent help here!" Her voice was filled with haste and fear.
"What's happening there? Can you provide details?" the officer asked.
"Um… s-some people…" Rosze struggled to explain.
"Give it here!"
Dylon snatched the phone and began, "Officer, there have been murders at the hospital. Come quickly!" He kept it short, knowing talk of monsters or viruses would raise more questions.
"Murders?!"
The officer sounded shocked."Stay where you are and don't let anyone leave the hospital. We'll be there in fifteen minutes " the officer continued, then hung up.
"Fuuu…" Dylon exhaled, believing the police's arrival would keep them safe.
"Fifteen minutes?! But in that time, those infected monsters will kill so many people!" Rosze thought, feeling fifteen minutes was too long.
" Why isn't Evelon answering my calls? He hasn't returned to the hospital from the meeting… Is it still going on?" Rosze was worried about her older brother.
Since he left for the President's meeting, he hadn't called, and he wasn't picking up her calls either. Fear crept in—what if something had happened to him?
BAM! BAM!
Grrtttt… grrraaa…
The monsters were still pounding on the canteen door, refusing to leave, clawing and growling relentlessly.
"Shit… why aren't they leaving?" a doctor muttered.
"They'll stay like this until the city police arrive and kill them," Rosze replied.
"Are they just mindless bodies?" Dr. Bigbelly asked.
"Probably… Their strange movements, creepy growls, and animalistic behavior—after observing them for a few moments, it's clear they can't think or feel. They only see food, and to those monsters, we're the food," Rosze said, having quickly pieced together their behavior.
"Hmm…" Bigbelly nodded, having noticed the same in those brief moments.
"Is Dr. Shelby still in the hospital?" Dr. Torcose asked, looking slightly calmer knowing the city police were coming.
"He had a meeting with the President about this virus today. He hasn't returned yet," Rosze replied, her words tinged with a lie—she didn't actually know where Evelon was.
"Did you tell him about the situation here?" Torcose pressed, feeling they still weren't safe and sensing something worse was coming. If Evelon were here, the military might follow.
"I tried, but he didn't answer. He's probably still in the meeting. I think Dr. Evelon must have learned more about the virus and is busy finding a solution," Rosze said, reassuring herself as much as Torcose.
"If the President and Dr Evelon knows , they'll surely find a way to handle this," Torcose said, feeling some relief.
But....
" Grrr… grrt… gruu…"
Torcose's relief was just a fleeting dream. A faint growling came from within the canteen, drawing everyone's attention. It was none other than Nurse Lice, who had frantically warned them earlier with a terrified expression.
When she'd stumbled into the canteen and spoken, she'd fainted almost immediately. Rosze had checked her and found her unconscious, assuming it was from shock and exhaustion, so she didn't pay much attention. She hadn't noticed the bite mark on Lice's arm—or if she had, she wouldn't have thought it significant.
Everyone froze in terror as the frail nurse began rising from the floor in an unnatural, contorted pose. Her eyes glowed red, and a clear bite mark was visible on her right arm. Strange noises came from her mouth.
"Grrrrrrrr… Graaaaa…" She started advancing toward them slowly.
"H-Hey… hey… how is this virus working?" Dylon stammered, stepping back, fear etched on his face as he stood closest to Lice.
The others were too shocked to speak, realizing they were trapped in a deadly situation. Outside, four or five infected pounded on the door, while inside, Lice had transformed without them noticing.
"Grtttrrrr…"
The city police were still fifteen minutes away, but they didn't even have that long. They understood that staying still for even a minute meant certain death.
"N-No… no… I don't want to die! My wife is due to give birth next week!" Dr. Torcose's courage crumbled as Lice advanced.
"Shit… Lice was infected when she came here… How is this spreading? Is anyone else infected?" Rosze, terrified and pale, backed away, staring ahead.
Then her eyes fell on the bite mark on Lice's arm, clearly from a human. She understood instantly and shouted,
"The virus spreads through bites! Don't let her get close!"
"Arrhhhaaaa… this is a nightmare… someone wake me up!" the lady doctor screamed.
