Chapter 8: Ch 8: Nightmare
SKEDAN…
A low-crime city in TARCIA, SKEDAN is a place where people are content with their work and consider it a peaceful, safe haven. At night, some work overtime, others run businesses, free from worries of theft or robbery, thanks to the capable local police who have maintained peace for decades.
But this tranquility was about to be shattered, starting in a place where people go to heal—City Hospital.
City Hospital…
A nurse, Lice, ran frantically toward the canteen, her face pale with sheer terror. Her breathing was heavy, yet she didn't stop, racing until she reached the canteen's entrance.
Inside, top doctors were enjoying dinner, laughing happily. Lice rushed to them and stopped, trembling violently, her hands and legs shaking, her clothes stained with blood. Her condition shocked everyone.
"What happened, Nurse Lice? Who did this to you?" asked a lady doctor, her in-charge, confused and alarmed by Lice's state.
"T-the… p-patients… they killed everyone… ahhaaaha!" Lice broke down, sobbing loudly.
"What are you saying, Nurse Lice? And why is there blood on your clothes?" The doctors were baffled, unable to make sense of her words.
"T-The… dead… twenty patients… in q-quarantine… they came back to life and… started killing and eating everyone!" Lice collapsed to the floor, trembling, muttering incoherently, her words barely audible.
"What…?"
The doctors were still confused, unable to process Lice's words. But one doctor's face drained of color when she heard "twenty patients." Only a few top doctors, including her, knew the truth.Dr. Rosze was one of them, and Nurse Lice worked under her.
"H-Has the virus fully evolved?" Rosze thought, her skin crawling. She had no idea what it could do post-evolution, but a deep, dangerous dread gripped her.
"I need to alert Dr. Shelby immediately," she thought urgently, pulling out her phone to make a call.
"Arghhhhhh… h-help! ...Argggghh" A piercing scream came from outside the canteen. Startled, several doctors rushed toward the sound.Outside, they saw a nurse lying on the floor in the right corner, her body badly injured .
"That's the new nurse joined this month!" one doctor recognized her and moved toward her.
"Hey… are you okay?" he called out, getting no response.
He approached, with other doctors following. as he neared the nurse Dr Dylan confirmed she was already dead and when he looked straight .
He saw a man crouched over her legs, eating her flesh.his entire body was drenched in blood.
Dr.Dylan face froze in horror—
"Ahhhhhhhh… M-Murder… murder… someone call the police!" he screamed.
Hearing the shout, the man looked up and began making strange growling noises.
"Grrrrr… grrrraa…""Grrrrrtttttaaaa!"
The man stood and charged at the doctor like a puppet. Before anyone could react, he attacked.
The other doctors panicked. "Shit! Grab him! He's going to kill Dr. Dylon!" one shouted. They rushed to restrain the attacker, pulling him off Dr. Dylon.
"Arghhh… fuck… I won't let you get away!" Dylon, furious, lunged at the attacker. The doctors, caught in the chaos, didn't notice the attacker's unnatural behavior or his eerie growls, too confused to process it.
Hearing the commotion, Dr. Rosze stepped out, her phone still ringing in her hand. When she saw the attacker, her instincts screamed, "Danger… run!"
She yelled, "Stop! Get away from him now!"
The others turned to her, seeing the fear on her face and the urgency in her voice, but they didn't understand.
"What are you saying, Dr. Rosze? This man attacked our colleague!" a heavyset doctor said, his voice filled with anger.
"Shit… they don't know about the virus…" Rosze thought, regretting that the virus's details were kept top secret. Her superiors had forbidden sharing it. "To hell with top secret… lives are more important," she decided.
"That man is dangerous! He's infected with an unknown, deadly virus that's changed him. If you want to survive, get away from him now!" she shouted.
"What… virus?"
"Why don't we know about this virus?"
The doctors grew even more confused.
"You're lying, Dr. Rosze! " Dr. Dylon yelled, his anger interrupted by a growl.
"Grrrraaaaaaa!"
The attacker let out a loud growl, twisting his head wildly. The doctors holding him instinctively loosened their grip.
He bit one doctor's shoulder.
"Arghhhhhh… g-get him off me… ahhhhhhh!" the doctor screamed in pain.
"Hey! Grab that maniac!" Dylon shouted, rushing toward him.
"No! Save yourselves!" Dr. Rosze yelled again . Some doctors retreated toward the canteen, while others moved to help the bitten doctor.
"Grrr…"
Another sound came. Everyone turned to see the dead nurse rising from the floor. The sight of a corpse standing sent chills down their spines, and they sensed danger from her.
"W-What the hell is this, Dr. Rosze? Is this the virus you mentioned?" one doctor, edging toward the canteen, asked in fear, seeking confirmation. Before Rosze could answer, more growls echoed.
"Grrrr… grrrtttr… arrrrrr… arggg…"
Four more figures emerged behind the nurse, growling and advancing.
"Run to the canteen!"
Rosze's shout snapped everyone out of their shock, and they fled toward the canteen.
"Ahhhhhh… shit… what is this… what's happening in this hospital?!"
"Fast! Fast!"
"Nooooo… someone save me!"
The doctor bitten earlier collapsed, the nurse and three other men tearing into his body while he was still alive. The horrific sight made several doctors freeze in terror.
"Argggggggggggghhbhh…"
"F-Forgive us, Dr. Larcal…" they stammered, horrified by the scene.
"Hurry… hurry… lock the door! They're coming! Fast, damn it!" Dylon's voice trembled, his face filled with terror as he watched the infected tear into Dr. Larcal.
BAM!
Two people slammed the door shut with force.
"Huff… huff… hfffff… fuuuu…"
Everyone gasped for air, having forgotten to breathe in the chaos.
These doctors had performed countless operations, yet the inhuman scene—humans tearing into humans like ravenous animals—shook them to their core.
"W-What was that… what the hell was that?! Speak, you bitch!" Dylon, seething, grabbed Dr. Rosze by the throat, his pent-up hatred for her spilling out. He had another reason for his anger: Rosze knew about the virus beforehand.
"Dr. Dylon, what are you doing?! Let her go—she's your senior!" Dr. Bigbelly, panting, grabbed Dylon's arm.
"Dr. Bigbelly, didn't you see what happened out there?! That monster tore Dr. Larcal apart like paper, and this bitch knew about the virus but kept it from us while working alongside us! Because of her, our colleague was brutally murdered!" Dylon's words resonated with the others.
"But… you can't just attack someone like this! That's for the city police to handle. We need to focus on getting out of this situation first," Dr. Bigbelly reasoned. He saw the truth in Dylon's words but couldn't let a crime happen in front of him.
"Dr. Bigbelly is right. Before we fight among ourselves, we need to think about escaping this situation," another doctor agreed, supporting Bigbelly.
"Fine, but on one condition—you tell us everything you know about this virus," Dylon said, calming his anger after a moment's thought, determined to understand the virus.
Dr. Rosze nodded silently, and Dylon released her throat.
"Cough… cough… cough… hah… hah… hah…" Rosze coughed violently, gasping for air after being choked.
"A-Are you okay, Dr. Rosze?" Dr. Bigbelly asked with concern.
"Y-Yes… cough… thank you, Dr. Bigbelly," Rosze said, grateful. If Dylon had kept choking her, she might have died.
Krrrrrrrrr… Krrrrrrr…BAM! BAM!
"Shit! They're trying to break down the door! We need to reinforce it!" Dr. Syrus panicked as the infected pounded on the door.
"Yeah… we have to strengthen the door!" Dylon said, looking around frantically.
"B-But how?" a lady doctor asked, her voice trembling with fear, her body shaking.
"If we stack the canteen tables against the door, it'll keep the infected out. " Dr. Rosze suggested. Everyone glared at her with hatred, except Dr. Bigbelly, who showed no resentment.Dr. Bigbelly nodded in agreement.
"Yes, that'll work. It'll make the door stronger and keep it from opening."The others didn't say anything, just moved toward the tables, pairing up to drag them.
Fifteen minutes later...
They stacked the tables one on top of another against the door.
"Huff… huff… now it feels safe," Bigbelly said, catching his breath, confident that no matter how hard the infected tried, they couldn't break through.
Exhausted, everyone had just finished stacking the benches one on top of another. After catching their breath for a few minutes, they turned toward Rosze, who was sitting on a steel chair. They all wanted answers.
Dylon crouched down, glaring into her eyes with anger. "Now tell us about this damn virus," he demanded.
Rosze stayed silent for a moment before speaking.
"At the start of February, some patients were admitted with strange symptoms: sudden high fever, their heartbeat stopping abruptly, then restarting on its own seconds later, as if they were dying and coming back to life.
Severe body pain followed, and finally, their blood-red eyes. We ran countless tests but couldn't identify the cause. So, we informed Dr. Evelon Shelby. After closely studying the illness, he confirmed it was a new virus.
Dr. Shelby formed a team of ten, including me, and we were told to keep it a secret. For a week, day and night, we tested this virus. Its reactions shocked us all. Of all the dangerous viruses we've seen, this Z-Virus is far worse."
