Chapter 259: CIA Jacks Up the Price_2

"Well, Director Elvis, if you hand this person over to me, not only will I help you catch five spies of the same rank, but also, consider it a personal debt owed to you, what do you say?"
"This..."
Elvis was still very troubled and unable to make a decision.
"Trust me, Director Elvis, it's better for me to owe you a favor than to remember you owe me one. Don't you want a friend at the IRS?"
Though David seemed to be offering a favor, Elvis heard a hint of a threat in his tone.
Of course, setting aside the fact that David now held leverage over them, just his current position as the head of the Western Suburb Branch and the very likely prospect of him taking a high-ranking position in the headquarters in the future meant that they had to tread carefully around him.
"Here's what we'll do, Director David, this matter is of great importance and it's not within my power to decide. I would like to discuss it with my superiors."
David made a 'please' gesture.
Elvis then walked toward a lounge in the annex, with Brod and Jerome following closely behind.
"Damn it, David is too bullying. They caught the person, so why should he snatch them away?"
As soon as he entered and closed the door, Brod cursed angrily.
Jerome gestured for Brod to keep his voice down with a finger to his lips, to avoid being overheard from outside, then spoke in a low voice: "I have a question, why is he so eager to snatch this person away? This is worth pondering..."
Brod calmed down and speculated, "Just now, his subordinates brought a change of clothes inside, and I peeked into the interrogation room earlier, that woman has already changed. Could it be that David is blinded by her beauty?"
As a CIA agent, he was of course aware that many female spies were very good at using their charms to seduce men, especially someone like Maggie, whose beauty could be considered top-notch.
"Idiot!"
Elvis looked at Brod with speechless exasperation, then said, "For David to have risen from a minor inspector in Nevada State to the head of a bureau in Los Angeles, his mental fortitude is definitely far beyond that of the average person. How could a mere beauty seduce him?"
"Exactly, someone like David is not the type to be blinded by beauty. If he is willing to go to such lengths, then surely Maggie has something on her that makes it worth his while!"
"Oh? By that logic, it must be something very important. If that's the case, perhaps we shouldn't let her go all the more!"
Although Brod didn't know what kind of leverage Maggie had, the fact that David was willing to offer five spies of the same rank, a personal favor, and even threats to ask for this person, made Brod think that the leverage must be exceptional and certainly of great interest to the CIA.

"We can't just let her go either, don't forget what happened before, our dirt is already in the IRS database. If we anger David and he decides to pull it out, we could be taken down at any moment!"
Jerome's words cast a silence over the atmosphere.
At this moment, Elvis was also very troubled. Even though the scandal involved Jerome and Brod and not him,
both were his close subordinates, and should a scandal break out, he as their superior would inevitably be implicated.
The situation was such that not handing the person over to David would anger him, and with David's methods, they would surely not end well.
Yet, handing her over would be too bitter to swallow considering the destruction of the Bear Country Station.
Besides, he was very interested in whatever leverage Maggie had.
"Boss, maybe we can do it this way. If he really wants her, we can hand her over, but there's a condition. We want a share of whatever leverage Maggie has!"
Upon hearing Jerome's suggestion, Elvis's eyes lit up. After thoroughly considering it, he felt this was the best idea so far.
The person could be handed over, but the information must be shared; they had to know what kind of leverage it was!
However, before that, he needed to communicate with the higher-ups, so he picked up his phone.
After about ten minutes, Elvis came out of the lounge.
Although Maggie was a spy that the CIA was very keen to capture, she was not the kind that was a top or even a high-priority target.
For Elvis, who wanted to redeem past humiliations, she was a prime target to apprehend.
However, upon hearing that David was willing to exchange five spies of the same level, the senior officials of the CIA, still savoring the sweetness of the previous success, agreed without a second thought.
In fact, the CIA top brass agreed easily because Maggie, having been exposed and captured, was no longer of great value to the CIA.
On the other hand, those spies of the same rank who hadn't yet been exposed were more valuable to the CIA.
Of course, this was because Elvis did not disclose the possibility of Maggie possessing important leverage; otherwise, the CIA leadership may not have agreed so readily.
Elvis's silence on the matter was of course motivated by his own self-interest. He wanted to assess the leverage to determine if it could be of any other help to him personally.
If it turned out not to be particularly meaningful to him, he would then consider reporting it to the higher-ups.
This practice was actually an unspoken rule tacitly acknowledged by almost everyone in the CIA, so there was nothing strange about it.
"How about it, Director Elvis?"
Seeing the other party come out, David immediately asked.
"Since you, Director David, want this person, I can't refuse to do you this favor. However, I have a condition, just not sure if Director David would be willing to agree."
