Chapter 259: CIA Jacks Up the Price
Maggie did not answer directly but instead countered, "Even without knowing, could this bargaining chip be enough for you to help me just this once?"
"May I ask where you got it?"
Thinking it over carefully, there were so many people involved with Lolita Island, and the number of powerful elites who wished to obtain this incriminating material from Epstein was even greater. How had Maggie, a spy from Bear Country, acquired it?
It was certainly worth pondering, as he didn't want to be deceived in the end.
"That's a long story, but how I obtained it isn't important. What's important is that I indeed have it in my possession," she replied.
David, cradling his chin in one hand, said, "Then why don't you hand it over to the CIA? They would probably be very interested in this material as well."
"Heh."
Maggie let out a cold laugh and said, "Director David, everyone knows what the CIA is like. If I were to give this material to them, not only would they not let me off, but I would probably die even faster!"
Hearing this, David thought to himself that she was probably right. The CIA was infamous for its ruthlessness, planting evidence, and framing others. With such incriminating material from Lolita Island in their hands, someone like Maggie, who knew too much, would likely be the first to die.
However, he was still slightly uneasy and asked, "So you're not afraid that after I get this material, I'll turn around and sell you out?"
"No, you won't!"
"And why do you say that?"
"Because you're not one of those CIA people, you're a man of principles!"
Although Maggie hadn't interacted much with David, from the incident when she was captured, she could tell that if David said he would keep a secret, he would keep it.
And from the conversations she overheard while being tortured, she deduced that the CIA had approached Director David to request her information, but he had staunchly refused to give it to them.
Thus, she inferred that Director David was a man of professional ethics and principles, far more trustworthy than any person from the CIA.
Besides, there was another point worth mentioning: apart from David, she really didn't have many other options.
"Interesting..."
Through this brief exchange, David judged that Maggie probably wasn't trying to deceive him, but still he warned, "Just like you said, I'm a man of principles. If you respect me, I'll make sure you're comfortable. But if I find out you're using and deceiving me, I'll be more ruthless than the CIA. Understand?"
"I understand, rest assured, Director David. Just help me get out of here, and the material is yours. With this information in hand, you'll see the dirty deals of those elites. And then, the IRS could make a fortune in taxes!"
Maggie thought David was interested in obtaining the material because of the huge amount of taxes involved.
What she didn't know was that David didn't care about the amount of tax revenue; he was more concerned about the leverage it would give him over those people in the future.
Of course, these were things that David would naturally not tell her. He stood up, pushed open the door, and walked out.
Director Elvis and other CIA operatives were waiting patiently. As soon as they saw him come out, they approached immediately and asked, "How did it go, Director David? What did she say?"
The interrogation room indeed had surveillance and listening devices, but since Nisen and others were monitoring at David's behest, they had to be shut off; hence, they really didn't know what the two had discussed inside.
"Here's the thing, Director Elvis, I'd like to make a deal with you," began David.
"A deal? What kind of deal?"
Elvis tensed up immediately, seeming to sense that something was amiss.
"This woman, hand her over to me..."
"That's not possible!"
Elvis interrupted with a disgruntled voice before David could finish.
It was bad enough that David had previously refused to disclose the identity of the spy to them. Now that they had finally captured her after so much effort, David was trying to take her away, which was more than he could bear.
"Don't rush, just hear me out, Director Elvis. This woman is indeed of some assistance to me, otherwise I wouldn't be asking. If you agree to hand her over to me, I'll offer you the same cooperation as before, chasing down five spies regardless of their rank. What do you say?"
"No, Director David, we have her now, she's our catch. It's against the rules, I'm sorry but I cannot agree..."
Elvis refused without a second thought.
It wasn't that Maggie was their CIA's number one spy target that needed to be captured and punished. Read exclusive chapters at My Virtual Library Empire
It was simply because, as the primary culprit behind the destruction of their CIA Bear Country Station under his supervision, capturing her was the only way he could truly save face.
So, if it were any ordinary spy, he might have given David some leeway, but for this woman, he really couldn't.
"Director Elvis, don't hide behind rules. Are your CIA people really sticklers for the rules?"
"This..."
Confronted with David's increasingly stern words, Elvis suddenly remembered something: his subordinates, Jerome and Brod, had dirt on them in David's hands and it was on file with the IRS.
If he angered the other party, he would be in big trouble himself.
But if he were to hand the woman over so easily, he couldn't stand the idea, especially since it had taken so much effort to catch her.
