Chapter 10: To The Future
"'Përjetësia' must also mean 'eternity,' right? If you've evolved to the point where you exist only as a series of electrical waves, naming your planet that makes perfect sense. But what exactly is your current form? Why does it resemble an early-generation robot and such a fragile one at that? I subdued you earlier without any trouble," Karen questioned Doraemon, her curiosity apparent.
"Because I'm on Earth, I need a vessel, like this robotic cat. It acts as my conduit, modeled after robots that Father will create in the future. This body allows you to see me and communicate with me, but it also limits my abilities. Moreover, Earth's technological level is far too low, so I can only use the pocket on my stomach to retrieve tools from my planet," Doraemon explained.
Kelly and Karen nodded, beginning to believe Doraemon's words. Kelly asked: "Earlier, you said you'd help humans migrate to another planet. Where do you plan to take us? And how would we get there?"
"We've discovered a star system in Universe H. This star system has many similarities with the Solar System. The key difference is that while the Solar System has eight major planets, this star system has nine major planets (p/s: Pluto is still considered a planet in this system). However, this difference doesn't matter much. We've already terraformed the Earth-like planet in that system to support human life. If necessary, we'll also prepare the infrastructure. For now, we just need to use the time machine to travel 500 years into the future. Once we've assessed the situation, we'll use our technology to transfer everyone from Earth to that planet in Universe H. This way, humanity will escape its doom."
The two girls nodded, contemplating the idea. Living on a planet in Universe H? The concept was overwhelming. Moving to a planet in Universe H to live... Universe H... another universe... "Wait a moment. You just mentioned Universe H, right? Why is it called Universe H?"
"Well..." Doraemon rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Regarding the universe, we don't know much either. According to human theories, the universe is infinite. However, we know that a universe has boundaries—at least, an individual universe does. If you travel to the edge, you can enter another universe, which might resemble ours or be vastly different. So far, we've discovered 14 distinct universes. But in the vast, boundless void, who knows how many more exist?"
Nobita, Kelly, and Karen were utterly astonished. "14 universes!? So, What exactly is a universe? And what is the infinite void containing all these universes?"
"We're unsure," Doraemon admitted. "We only know that a single universe is minuscule compared to that void—so small it's barely worth mentioning."
Hearing Doraemon's words, everyone was shaken and deeply reflective. After all, humans always compare themselves to the universe, seeing how small we are in comparison. But no one had ever suggested that the universe itself might be insignificant. If so, then what are humans?
"It's hard to explain because we have no reference point. If we compare ourselves to the universe, then yes, the universe seems infinite and boundless. Similarly, if you compare the universe to that endless void, the universe is insignificant. Anyway..." Doraemon looked at the group, their mouths agape, and sighed helplessly. He quickly changed the subject: "So… What do you think of the migration plan?"
The two girls had no objections. For now, this seemed like the only option.
"Then let's head to 500 years in the future to make preparations!" Doraemon said as he pulled out the Anywhere Door and opened it, returning to Nobita's room.
"This is the technology of Përjetësia…" Kelly and Karen curiously inspected the Anywhere Door.
Nobita frowned and asked, "Why are you aliens so concerned about Earth? Why go out of your way to help humans?"
Though Nobita wasn't as smart as Kelly or Karen, he still understood how challenging it must be to locate a specific planet in a single universe, let alone find a star system resembling the solar system among countless universes. Moreover, the Earth-like planet in that system had already been terraformed to suit humans. Clearly, the people of Përjetësia had long been preparing. But why?
Had they predicted Earth's destruction and preemptively prepared an alternative home for humanity? Yet, Doraemon had seemed genuinely shocked when Kelly mentioned Earth's destruction 500 years from now. What were Përjetësia's true intentions? Suspicion grew in Nobita's mind. He assumed Kelly and Karen had similar doubts, but with no other options, they could only follow Doraemon for now.
Doraemon froze for a moment, his whole body trembling, but he quickly put on a calm facade and said, "We're neighbors, aren't we? How could we just stand by and watch humanity perish? Ha ha ha…"
"Yeah, neighbors who live 500,000 light-years away…" Nobita muttered under his breath but refrained from pressing further. "Doraemon really is hiding something…" he thought silently.
Doraemon gazed deeply at Nobita, sighed quietly, then turned and opened the desk drawer. "Let's go. Inside is the time machine." Doraemon motioned to Kelly and Karen before jumping in.
"A time tunnel connected to a desk drawer like this…" Kelly and Karen's eyes twitched. They didn't know whether to curse or laugh. A time tunnel entrance tucked into the drawer of an old desk—it felt like watching someone use an iPhone as a coaster. Shaking their heads, they reluctantly accepted it and followed Doraemon in. Nobita quickly joined them.
Once everyone was seated, Doraemon set the time machine's destination: 500 years into the future.
