Chapter 265: Ambush Encounter
To the fans' surprise, no matter how hard they searched—on search engines, in entertainment agency directories, or through industry contacts—they couldn't find any trace of someone named Furina.
No one had heard of her...
No one knew who she was...
Yet a star who had taken the internet by storm seemed to have appeared out of nowhere—rising overnight from the Outer Ring straight into city-wide fame.
But even that couldn't stop the growing wave of fans' admiration.
That very night, entertainment companies began asking around, eager to sign her.
Fan groups for Furina were popping up on messaging apps by midnight.
And yet...
No one could find Furina.
...
Meanwhile, in the Outer Ring, in the small town of Carrydon...
Furina remained blissfully unaware of everything happening in the city. She was resting peacefully in the room Caesar had arranged for her, dreaming of returning to Fontaine, reporting all she'd seen to Navia—and being praised for it.
In her sleep, Furina let out a little laugh.
...
At dawn the next day, sunlight slowly poured over the town of Carrydon.
Clorinde, Caesar, Piper, Nicole, Sam Li, and the others all woke to a brand-new day, continuing their preparations for the upcoming Tour de Inferno.
Later that morning, the proxies siblings—Belle and Wise—returned from a trip to the city, hauling in a load of custom motorcycle parts.
Caesar grinned. "Perfect. With these parts, our bikes' performance will take another leap forward."
Piper nodded. "Looks like we're set to win."
But Caesar shook her head. "Don't get cocky, Piper. Our opponents have access to these kinds of parts too—maybe even better ones. They could have done even more extensive modifications. This race won't be easy."
In terms of equipment, the opposing team wasn't lacking.
And in terms of experience, they'd dominated the championship for years. Their riders had far more time in the saddle than even Caesar and her crew. They were veterans in every sense.
To beat them, they'd need everything they had.
On top of that, Caesar planned to head into the Hollows for a trial run—to get a feel for the racing conditions inside.
After all, driving in the Hollows was a completely different beast. Unpredictable ether concentrations, unstable activity levels, fluctuating pressure zones—every element had to be accounted for.
Before the race, they needed at least one full lap inside the Hollows to prepare for what was to come.
With everyone working together—Caesar, Piper, Lucy, and the rest, along with help from Billy, Anby, Nicole, and others—they managed to finish modifying all three motorcycles by noon.
After lunch, Caesar took Lucy and Lighter and headed into the Hollows to get familiar with the terrain.
Piper, worried about them, drove the Calydon supply truck behind them to act as their support vehicle.
Shortly after they left, Jolly Jenny and the New Eridu TV crew also departed, reluctantly, to cover the rival team in the Tour de Inferno—the The Vanquishers.
The race was tomorrow, and there was still work to do: setting up the broadcast equipment and building the audience seating at the starting point.
Before leaving, Jolly Jenny extended one last invitation.
"Furina, would you like to come with us to check out the The Vanquishers' base?"
Furina declined immediately. "Thanks, but I'd like to spend more time around Carrydon Town."
Though a bit disappointed, Jolly Jenny made one more request.
"Miss Furina, the Tour de Inferno kicks off tomorrow. Would you be willing to perform a song before the race starts—to get the crowd hyped up?"
Furina hesitated for a moment, then smiled. "Sure. If I'm free, I'd be happy to."
After they left, the once-bustling town of Carrydon fell quiet.
Only a few members of Hare's House remained—along with Furina and Clorinde.
They stopped by a café for a drink, with Furina footing the bill, then followed Nicole to visit the large plot of land she had recently purchased.
Staring at the stretch of ruins before them, Nicole grinned.
"One day, I'm going to build a massive luxury villa right here—the new headquarters of Hare's House. Bigger than anything Victoria Housekeeping has."
Anby raised an eyebrow. "One villa won't cover this much land."
Billy chimed in, "Yeah, Nicole. What about the rest of the space?"
Nicole thought for a second. "Then we'll build a welfare center too..."
That had always been Nicole's dream—and now, it was finally within reach.
But it hinged on one thing: the future development of Carrydon Town. If things didn't turn around in the next two or three years, if the place stayed a ruin, there'd be no point moving Hare's House here. There wouldn't be any clients.
As the group chatted, Furina stood nearby, looking a little surprised.
"People can just... freely buy land here?"
Nicole nodded. "Of course. Even in the city, if you've got enough Dennies, you can buy an entire Hollow. Literally. Even if it's a decaying one, everything inside becomes yours."
But who would spend trillions of Dennies on a Hollow that could collapse at any time?
Only if it had oil or rare resources would it make sense.
Furina looked to Clorinde, her tone sincere. "Clorinde, let's buy a plot too. We could build an opera house right here—let the people here experience the magic of Fontaine's operas..."
Furina was kind by nature.
After seeing the decay in this town, she genuinely wanted to help—and for her, it wouldn't even cost much.
Clorinde smiled. "Lady Furina, I support you."
Furina lit up. "Once Caesar and the others return, I'll talk to her about it."
Not long after...
Caesar, Lucy, and the rest returned—earlier than expected.
But strangely, they weren't on motorcycles. They all came back crammed into Piper's truck.
As they stepped down from the vehicle, Furina and the others were stunned.
Caesar, Lucy, Piper, and Lighter were all covered in dirt, visibly injured.
Furina rushed over. "What happened to you?"
Lucy, seething, spat, "It had to be the The Vanquishers. They set up an ambush. Those bastards planted explosives along the route—filthy underhanded tactics..."
Those explosives were clearly meant for the race.
But because Caesar and the others went out early to scout the course, the enemy acted ahead of schedule—catching them in the trap.
Now Caesar and her team were hurt.
Lighter, Lucy, and Piper especially—seriously enough that it looked like they wouldn't be able to participate in tomorrow's Tour de Inferno.
