Chapter 130: Chapter 130: The Blue Fungus Spore
As the spatial rift opened, Richard grabbed Ellie and pulled her into the secret realm, casually tossing two Hearts of Annihilation to block the entrance. Under their power, two warrior insects instantly lost half their bodies. Yet, disturbingly, their remaining torsos continued to twitch, as if attempting to regenerate from their stumps.
Seeing Richard retreat into the secret realm, Ulysses breathed a sigh of relief. He and Richard were closely linked; as long as Richard lived, there was hope for Ulysses to reclaim his former glory, perhaps even surpass it.
With no need to protect Richard for the moment, Ulysses conserved his strength, shrinking to the size of a sparrow and extinguishing his annihilating flames. He slipped into the mushroom forest, watching as the fungal creatures approached.
He was curious about what treasure could attract such a swarm.
As for the remaining Sokul brother, Sodo, Ulysses noted that he'd already begun fleeing during Richard's skirmish with the insects and was nearing the Mushroom Field's edge.
"Caw, these wizards sure know how to run for their lives."
With Ellie in the secret realm, the curse flames on the insects dimmed. The secret realm was unlike the Mushroom Field, a parasitic space on the world; it was more akin to a separate world.
The separation between worlds severed Ellie's connection to the curse flames. With the help of the Insect God's Blood, the insects quickly regenerated, their carapaces thickening and muscles strengthening.
They marveled at their transformation, chirping joyfully, but the priest insect was far from delighted.
The priest insect reinserted the Insect God's Blood into its body, hoping to calm the Mushroom Field. Unbeknownst to it, a barely visible tendril had already entwined the Insect God's Blood.
Thud, thud, thud...
Heavy footsteps echoed from the Mushroom Field's depths as a terrifying five-meter-tall fungal spider bulldozed a path through the forest. Behind it, countless fungal creatures surged like a tide.
"This... this..."
The priest insect watched in terror. Despite having reabsorbed the Insect God's Blood, the fungal creatures still charged at them.
Had they angered the nature spirit?
Whatever the cause, they were powerless to resist.
"Staro, take the divine armor and the others and leave," the priest insect ordered decisively, handing a small shield to the black-armored warrior insect.
"What about you, sir?" asked the warrior insect.
"Me?"
The priest insect waved its antennae, kneeling toward the hive.
The moment it had taken out the Insect God's Blood, its injuries had flared. Though temporarily sustained by the blood, it knew it couldn't escape with it.
"My fate is sealed."
The warrior insect wanted to protest, but the priest insect had already removed its black crystal from its brow. Golden light leaked from the wound, attempting to heal it, but to no avail.
"Praise the Mother Insect God."
With its final blessing, the priest insect's black crystal vanished in a flash. The other warrior insects bowed slightly before retreating toward the hive.
Soon, the fungal creatures swarmed over, with the giant spider tearing open the priest insect's body to extract the golden amber.
The amber emitted a faint golden light that dissolved the spider's mycelium as if encountering its nemesis.
The fungal spider emitted a silent cry, its mycelium forming a tentacle to grab a nearby first-tier fungal creature and toss it onto the amber.
The creature barely had time to react before the golden light dissolved its body, just like before.
But Ulysses, hidden in the forest, saw the pattern.
"Caw, wearing down the seal with sheer numbers? Just like those abyssal scum."
In his perception, the golden amber's light dimmed slightly with each fungal sacrifice. Though the change was subtle, enough fungal sacrifices would eventually extinguish the amber's glow.
Following the fungal spider's lead, the stronger fungal creatures began doing the same.
One by one, they were thrown close to the amber, gradually dimming its light.
The fungal horde dwindled with each round of attrition, leaving only a few scattered survivors. Among them, Ulysses recognized a familiar figure.
"Caw, this Lawrence has a knack for survival."
In a corner of the Mushroom Field, a fungal creature in wizard robes lay quietly, shrouded in shadow, overlooked by the higher-ranking fungal beings.
As a veteran necromancer who had survived several planar wars, Lawrence had numerous survival skills.
Had the priest insect not used sealing magic, he had nine ways of escaping.
After being unsealed and thrown into the Mushroom Field as a sacrifice, he used a magic item to protect his soul from fungal corruption. Once the fungi had rebuilt his body, he used necromancy to enslave the new fungal form.
For wizards specializing in mental evolution, the physical body was less important. As long as the soul remained, many could change bodies as easily as changing clothes.
From the shadows, Lawrence watched the amber's light wane, feeling no emotion.
A long-lived black wizard learns the virtue of restraint.
No matter how powerful or valuable the amber was, it was beyond his reach.
His presence here was simple: the Insect God's Blood had awakened his fungal body's instincts, drawing him involuntarily.
Yet, his presence brought an unexpected boon: he recognized Ellie's traces in the battleground, indicating Richard's involvement.
His fungal form couldn't leave the Mushroom Field, and a soul venture was too risky. Any strong energy fluctuation could end him.
Richard's appearance was the solution he needed.
...
As another fungal creature dissolved, the golden amber's light finally vanished. The fungal spider seized it and snapped it apart.
In the next moment, an intense life energy burst from the amber, driving nearly all the fungal creatures into a frenzy.
They charged at the amber, or more precisely, at the object within—a blue fungal spore.
Thump!
With a swing of its leg, the fungal spider blasted a second-tier fungal insect to pieces, its mycelium drifting like dandelion fluff.
Yet the remaining fungal creatures continued their assault on the blue spore.
In an instant, mycelium filled the air like snow.
Amid the chaos, a cocky voice rang out from the mushroom forest.
"Caw, you brainless fools. Do you think you're worthy of this?" (in Divine Language)
A black streak shot from the forest, swallowing the blue spore before even the third-tier fungal spider could react.
"Roar!"
A fungal creature roared in pursuit of Ulysses, but within seconds, they halted and turned back to the forest's depths.
Hidden in the forest, Lawrence sensed the signal drawing his fungal body vanish.
The fungal creatures resumed their previous behaviors.
"That crow is something else," Lawrence mused aloud, watching where Ulysses had vanished. "Even sealed so tightly, every fungal creature sensed the spore, yet this crow completely blocked its allure..."
Lawrence chose not to dwell further. As an experienced wizard, he knew every wizard had secrets, and probing them brought only trouble and enmity.
He needed only to wait for Richard to appear and help him secure a new body.
...
Inside the secret realm, Richard sat on the ground, staring at his pocket watch.
Three days had passed since entering the secret realm.
With no day or night cycle, Richard relied on his watch to track time.
Ulysses' warning had prompted his immediate retreat into the secret realm, though he didn't know why.
This uncertainty left him unsure how long to wait before reemerging.
"Boss, boss, don't be sad. Puffball Three offers you honey."
A Holy Tree sprite flitted to his side, offering a honey-laden flower petal to his lips.
Sensing their leader's foul mood, the sprites' simple minds suggested that sweets might help.
Richard accepted the petal, gently patting the sprite.
The honey, infused with a faint life energy, was less potent than that sold by the wizard guild but still commendable.
Though his secret realm lacked magic plants, relying on ordinary blooms, the sprites' honey was a testament to their prowess.
He hadn't considered the honey before, but now planned to cultivate some magic plants in the realm to see if it improved.
After swallowing the petal, Richard pocketed his watch and stood.
"Ellie, get ready. I'm opening the rift."
Across the secret realm, Ellie closed her book, picked up her staff, and joined Richard.
"Your secret realm is quite nice, much better than mine."
"It's decent, mainly thanks to these little guys."
As the rift opened, Richard cautiously extended his mental senses outside.
"Caw, come out, it's safe now!"
Receiving Ulysses' signal, Richard gestured to Ellie and exited the secret realm.
The Mushroom Field had returned to its natural state. Under its vitality, traces of their battle were overgrown.
But Richard immediately noticed the shattered Insect God's Blood.
Approaching the amber shards, he asked, "What happened to the amber?"
Ulysses' eyes darted. "Caw, it contained something, destroyed by the fungal creatures."
"And what about what was inside?"
"Caw, of course, it was taken by those fungal creatures."
Richard eyed Ulysses, skeptical. "Are you sure?"
"Caw, I'm sure!"
Just then, a figure emerged from the mushroom forest.
"Richard, I have a proposition for you."
