Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Russ and Kasha, the Favor of the Second Primarch
"I'll go see them off," Axis said to Kasha and Russ.
"Go on, Axis. Say your goodbyes, but don't draw any suspicion from others," Russ replied.
After all, these had once been comrades-in-arms.
Now they were parting ways, and who knew when they would meet again, maybe decades, maybe even centuries later.
A proper farewell was only fitting.
Axis nodded to Russ and Kasha, then turned and made his way toward the vast hangar bay of the Gloriana-class battleship.
After Axis left, Russ gave a meaningful look to the woman standing at his side.
"What's wrong, Lord Russ? Is there a problem?" Kasha asked with a smile.
She remembered the first time she'd met this "younger brother". Back then, he had still been inside the incubation pod.
Yet her own mother had been deceived, and together with Kasha and some others, she had banished these brothers to the far reaches of the galaxy.
"Your psychic power feels very familiar to me. When Father found me on Fenris, the power he used was quite similar to yours," Russ said.
Letting Axis go to the hangar wasn't just about saying farewell to the Custodes, it was also an excuse to send him away so Russ could ask about Kasha's origins.
"All psykers' powers are more or less similar. Maybe it's just coincidence that my abilities are a lot like the Emperor's," Kasha answered.
"You're not like the others at all. The other psykers always give off a sense of something sinister when they use their power. I don't really like most psykers, even though the Imperium relies on them for so many things," Russ replied.
Kasha's psychic power, while not as brilliant as the Emperor's, was strangely warm and utterly lacked the chilling coldness of other psykers.
"Lord Russ, have you met many psykers?" Kasha asked.
"Plenty! Every ship needs a psyker for warp communications, and to ward off the daemons of the Warp.
"The Navigator families who guide us even have a third eye, and their psychic strength isn't weak, but none of them make me feel as comfortable or as warm as you do," Russ said.
That sensation was something he had only ever felt from the Emperor himself.
If other psykers' powers were chaotic, even a bit tainted, then the powers used by Kasha and the Emperor were undeniably benevolent?
"Lord Russ, maybe it's because I grew up in the Imperial Palace on Terra and was personally trained by the Emperor himself. So my psychic abilities are probably closer to his.
"Apart from the Emperor and Lord Malcador, I'm the most powerful psyker in the whole Imperium," Kasha said.
The Primarchs really were sharp.
Even those considered the most 'barbaric' could figure out the truth if she let slip a few more details.
"Is that so? Axis told me you consider yourself the third most powerful psyker in the Imperium, but that's not really true.
"You'd rank at least twenty-second," Russ said.
In fact, there was something he hadn't told Axis.
The Primarchs all possessed some degree of psychic ability, they just didn't use it much. Russ himself was an example.
Most of his brothers had psychic talent, and some could even glimpse pieces of the future.
At Russ's words, Kasha only smiled silently.
'My dear brother,' she thought.
'You didn't quite understand what I meant. I meant I was the third most powerful among ordinary humans in the Imperium. Do you count yourselves as normal humans?'
Though their genes came from their father and mother, after so many optimisations, every Primarch was a giant among men, wielding unimaginable power.
But some of them had their own weaknesses.
They couldn't even reproduce with normal human women.
What was the essence of carrying on life?
It was to propagate the species.
No matter how strong someone was, as long as they were normal, they could produce offspring with their biological counterpart.
But the Primarchs didn't have this ability.
They were genetically incompatible with ordinary human women.
The Emperor hadn't castrated them, he had simply never made any women who could match them.
When creating the Primarchs, her father had deliberately chosen not to create a female Primarch.
Kasha didn't know the exact methods used to create them, but both she and her mother understood: much of it came from what the Emperor had brought back from the Warp.
These twenty-one brothers all possessed incredible psychic potential.
If they ever accepted the true nature of the Warp, they could awaken powers even greater than Malcador's, second only to the Emperor.
"Why aren't you answering my question, girl?" Russ pressed.
"Please don't call me 'girl,' Lord Russ. Even though you're a Primarch, if we're talking about actual age, I'm older than you," Kasha said.
"You're a Perpetual!" Russ's expression changed with shock.
He had been part of the Imperium for over twenty years, so he wasn't ignorant.
Officially, the Imperium only had two publicly acknowledged Perpetual: the Emperor and Malcador.
But in reality, there were others.
During the Age of Strife, quite a few Perpetuals on Terra had chosen to serve the Emperor.
Human Perpetuals wouldn't die of old age, and their bodies were nearly indestructible.
"That's right. You can think of me as a Perpetual," Kasha replied.
Although she didn't have the formidable regenerative powers of other Perpetual, as someone who inherited the Emperor's genes, she too could live forever.
"Axis and I are going to visit another brother of mine. A Primarch with the strongest psychic powers among us. Maybe you two can compare notes.
"The planet he lives on is very open to psykers, and there are many powerful ones there, Miss Kasha," Russ said.
Apparently, learning this girl's true identity wouldn't be so simple.
Kasha smiled and nodded to Russ. She was actually looking forward to meeting another brother with such immense psychic ability.
…
On the other side, Axis had arrived at the hangar bay of the Gloriana-class battleship.
Sixteen gold-armoured Custodes were already assembled and waiting.
Caesar stepped forward and saluted solemnly: "Captain Axis, please take care."
Axis smiled and returned the salute.
"Caesar, and all of you, I wish you a safe journey."
"Shield-Captain Axis, we look forward to your return to Holy Terra to lead us again," Caesar said, and the other Custodes nodded in agreement.
Axis nodded back and turned his gaze to the Second Primarch and his Children.
"My Children, board the ship first. I have something I need to do," the Second Primarch said, waving his hand for them to board the transport.
Those Space Marines had already had their memories wiped by Kasha, so they didn't know Axis's current identity.
It was best to let them leave first.
The warriors of the Second Legion bowed to their father, then, under the Custodes' watch, filed onto the transport craft.
When all four transports were filled, they departed for a destroyer waiting nearby.
Now, only one transport remained in the vast hangar.
This last one would take the Second Primarch and the sixteen Custodes away.
"Honored Primarch, is your body feeling better?" Axis asked politely.
"I am feeling much better now, Mister Axis. Thank you for saving me, if not for you, I would be dead, and there would be no Second Legion left," the Second Primarch replied.
Although he had only returned for a single night, his remarkable Primarch intellect and ability to learn meant he'd already understood a great deal.
He also knew he owed his survival to the man before him.
"That's good to hear, honoured Primarch. May I know your name? We've known each other for a while, but I still don't know what to call you," Axis asked.
"My name is Nicholas Karl. You can just call me Karl from now on," Karl said.
"Then, Lord Karl, I wish you a smooth journey. May you rebuild the Second Legion and join the Great Crusade once more, fighting for all humanity," Axis said.
"Lord Axis, I will never forget what you've done for me and for the Second Legion. If you ever need my help, so long as it isn't a betrayal of the Emperor, no matter what it is, you can come to me. I will help you unconditionally," the Second Primarch replied solemnly, standing up to address Axis.
Axis actually felt a little embarrassed, after all, he'd wiped out more than ninety percent of Karl's Children, though they had already fallen to the xenos' control.
Still, a favor from a Primarch was no small thing, so Axis accepted it graciously.
"Then I won't stand on ceremony, Lord Karl," Axis replied with a smile.
"Farewell, Lord Axis. I hope that one day we can fight side by side," Karl said, waving to Axis before boarding the final transport with the sixteen Custodes.
Together, they headed toward the cruiser that Axis and the others had originally arrived on.
Standing on the hangar deck, watching the destroyer slowly depart, Axis was filled with mixed emotions.
From this moment, he would begin a new life, no longer a Custodian, but a Space Wolf Space Marine.
At that moment, a grand feast was taking place in the Space Wolves' hall, a celebration held for Axis, full of the wild spirit of Fenris.
"Hey, Axis! Come over here and try this mead brewed just for you!" Russ called, holding up a giant drinking horn.
Kasha raised her glass beside Russ, gesturing toward Axis.
"Haha. Tonight, I'm not leaving till I'm drunk!" Axis said with a broad grin, walking toward the celebration held in his honor.
That night, everyone drank themselves into a stupor.
