Chapter 25: Unraveling the truth
The night was quiet in the mansion. The sounds of the outside world seemed distant, muffled by the grand walls and luxurious furnishings of Tony's home. Inside their bedroom, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension, but also something else—something softer that neither Sophie nor Tony had acknowledged until now.
After everything that had happened—the kidnapping, the threats, the gala—Sophie had spent the last few days trying to piece together her feelings for the man who was now her husband. She was no longer a stranger to the complicated, cold world Tony inhabited, but still, there was so much she didn't know about him. The protective, commanding side of him—his desire to keep her safe at any cost—had become clear. But it was also clear that there were dark corners of his past that he hadn't shared with her.
That night, as they prepared for bed, Tony had been unusually quiet, his sharp eyes lost in thought as he paced the room. Sophie, feeling a strange blend of exhaustion and curiosity, had decided to break the silence.
"Tony," she called softly, looking up from the book she had been reading. "Are you okay?"
He paused and glanced at her, his expression unreadable. After a long moment, he walked over to the side of the bed and sat down next to her. His hand reached for hers, and she couldn't ignore the familiar warmth of his touch.
"I'm fine," he replied, but there was an edge to his voice, something Sophie couldn't quite place.
As they sat there, a heavy silence fell over them again. Sophie didn't push further, knowing Tony wasn't one to easily open up. Instead, she simply rested her head on his shoulder, allowing herself to relax for the first time in what felt like ages.
Minutes passed, and she almost drifted off to sleep when Tony spoke again.
"I have something for you," he said, his voice low. "It's time you had it back."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the pendant—the one she had left behind when they first married. Sophie's breath caught in her throat as he placed it gently in her hand. It felt heavier than she remembered, as if the weight of everything between them had been embedded in its delicate gold surface.
"I never wanted to take it from you," Tony continued, his gaze softening as he looked at her. "But I needed you to see how much you matter to me."
Sophie blinked back the unexpected tears in her eyes. There was something so vulnerable in Tony's gaze at that moment—something that made her chest tighten.
Without thinking, Sophie leaned in closer to him, her lips brushing his in a tentative kiss. It wasn't a passionate kiss, but it was soft and lingering, the kind of kiss that spoke of something deeper—of trust, of shared pain, of tentative hope.
As they broke apart, Sophie looked into his eyes, searching for answers she wasn't sure he had. She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, something caught her attention—something lying on the nightstand. It was an envelope, sealed with a dark red wax.
Sophie reached for it, her fingers trembling as she broke the seal and unfolded the letter inside. As she began to read, the blood drained from her face.
Tony,
By the time you read this, it may already be too late.
There are secrets I've kept from you, secrets that could ruin us both. But you need to know them. If you want to keep Sophie safe, you must end the contract. Walk away now, before everything spirals.
I've protected you for so long, but this is where it ends. The people I've wronged will come for everything I love. And that includes her.
I'm sorry.

Sophie's hands shook as she finished reading the letter, her mind reeling from the words that seemed to haunt her. "End the contract? Keep me safe? What does this mean, Tony?" she whispered, but the question hung in the air, unanswered.
A cold chill settled over her as the implications of the letter hit her like a tidal wave. Tony had been hiding something from her—something so huge, so dangerous, that it threatened everything they had built together. She tried to understand what it meant, but the more she thought about it, the more her heart sank.
"Sophie," Tony began, but his voice faltered when he saw the look on her face. "I—"
"You've been lying to me, Tony," Sophie cut him off, her voice sharp with hurt. "What are you involved in? What kind of world am I living in?"
Tony moved to speak, but Sophie stood up abruptly, the pendant in her hand now feeling like a weight too heavy to bear. "I don't want to hear any more excuses. I want the truth, Tony. I'm your wife now, but I don't even know who you really are."
Tony stood as well, moving toward her with an urgency she wasn't used to. "Sophie, please, I didn't want you to get involved in any of this. It's not safe for you, not now."
"Then why am I here?" Sophie snapped, her voice trembling. "Why did you make me marry you if you had all these secrets? If your life is so dangerous, why didn't you tell me?"
Tears welled up in her eyes as the weight of it all hit her. The trust, the hope, the fragile love they had started to build—it all felt like it was crumbling before her. She couldn't understand why Tony had kept this from her, why he hadn't been honest from the start.
Sophie took a deep breath, the realization hitting her like a punch to the gut. She wanted to leave, to walk away and never look back, but she couldn't. She had made a commitment—not just to Tony, but to her parents, who had given their approval. They had trusted her, and now she was trapped in this world, bound by promises she hadn't fully understood.
"I need time," Sophie said, her voice breaking. "I need time to think. I can't deal with this right now, Tony. I… I just can't."
Tony reached for her, his expression softening as he saw her pain. "Sophie, please… don't leave me. Don't walk away from us."
But Sophie couldn't respond. She couldn't find the words to explain how she felt, how confused and betrayed she was. Instead, she turned away from him, heading toward the door.
"I'm staying here," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But don't expect me to be the same woman you married."
With that, Sophie left the room, the door clicking softly behind her. Tony stood there, watching her go, his heart breaking in a way he had never known.
The truth had come out, and Sophie's world—everything she thought she knew—was unraveling before her eyes.
And for the first time in their marriage, Sophie wasn't sure if there was any way back.
