Chapter 24: Parents approval

The tension had been mounting for weeks. Sophie couldn't shake the feeling that her parents were still unsure about her marriage to Tony. Though they hadn't overtly rejected him, there were subtle signs—concerned glances, whispered conversations, and cautious questions—that told her they were still processing the situation. The fact that Tony was a powerful, successful man, with a life far different from what Sophie had ever imagined for herself, only added to their hesitation.

It was a sunny afternoon when Sophie received the call. Her parents had asked to meet with her and Tony again, this time at a quiet café in the city. She had agreed reluctantly, wondering what the outcome would be this time. After all, their last encounter had been filled with tension, with Sophie's parents only offering lukewarm approval of Tony. They had insisted that Sophie was an adult and could make her own decisions, but there was an unspoken wariness in their eyes that Sophie couldn't ignore.

As she arrived at the café with Tony by her side, her nerves were frayed. She hadn't wanted to drag Tony into this, but he had insisted on accompanying her. Sophie wasn't sure if that was a sign of his possessiveness or if he genuinely cared, but either way, he was here, and that was all that mattered for the moment.

Her parents were already seated at a table, their expressions guarded. Sophie sat down, Tony beside her, and her parents gave him a polite nod. The silence between them was thick, suffocating even. Tony's presence seemed to demand respect, and yet Sophie couldn't shake the feeling that her parents weren't fully on board.

Her father cleared his throat. "Sophie, we appreciate you bringing Tony here today," he said, his voice steady but cautious. "We've had some time to think about everything... your marriage, your future."

Sophie's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't been sure what they would say, but this was it—the moment of truth.

Tony, ever the composed businessman, kept his gaze fixed on her parents, his posture perfect. "I understand your concerns, Mr. and Mrs. Green. I'm not here to pressure anyone into accepting me, but I can assure you that I'm committed to Sophie and her happiness. Our marriage is not just a business arrangement—it's a partnership."

Her mother exchanged a look with her father before speaking. "We know that, Tony," she said gently. "But you come from a world that's so different from ours. Sophie deserves someone who will look out for her in every way. We only want what's best for her."

Tony's jaw tightened, and for a moment, Sophie thought he might lose his cool. But instead, he softened, the glimmer of a real emotion in his eyes that surprised her.

"I care about Sophie more than anything," he said quietly. "More than my business, more than any of the pressures that come with my life. I will protect her, and I'll make sure she's happy. No matter what."

Sophie watched as her parents took in his words. There was a long pause, during which her father simply stared at Tony, his brow furrowed. But finally, he nodded.

"I see that you're sincere, Tony," her father said, his voice firm but not unkind. "We don't have to understand everything, but we want to believe that you'll take care of Sophie. She's our daughter, and we want her to have a future where she feels safe, loved, and respected."

Her mother added, "We may not agree with everything, but we trust that you'll be there for her when it matters most."

Sophie felt a weight lift from her shoulders. Her parents were cautious, but they were giving their blessing, at least in their own way. It wasn't a wholehearted embrace of Tony, but it was acceptance, and that was a start.

"I'll make sure she's always happy," Tony promised, his voice low but full of conviction. "I won't disappoint you."

With that, the tension in the room seemed to dissipate, replaced by a tentative understanding. It wasn't the resolution Sophie had hoped for, but it was enough for now. As they finished their coffee, Sophie felt a sense of relief wash over her. Her parents were finally beginning to see that, despite everything, she had made a choice—one that she was committed to, no matter the cost.
