Chapter 59: Maria powerup
Later that evening, as the lights dimmed across the clinic and Maria finished locking up the front, Alex leaned back in his chair with a cup of herbal tea. The day had been long, but calm—no gunfights, no screaming, just medicine and healing. Peaceful, in a way only Hell's Kitchen could understand.
Cypher's voice came through the secure line in his ear. "We've secured the last of the Kingpin's distribution routes. No resistance. Zephyra scared the hell out of the Yakuza contact, literally."
Alex sipped from his cup. "Good. And the political assets?"
"Handled. They won't say a word. They're more terrified of us than they ever were of Fisk."
"Then we're done here," Alex said. "Time to consolidate. Let the smaller gangs know who runs the city now—silently. No blood unless necessary."
"Understood, Master," Cypher replied smoothly. "By the way… Maria wants powers?"
"She mentioned it, yeah. Said she felt like the odd one out."
Zephyra's voice joined the call, a crackle of static in her tone. "She's loyal. Honest. Not a bad choice. I have a way—but it's risky. A storm mark. Temporary at first, but if her body adapts… we can make it permanent."
Alex's brow lifted slightly. "And the risk?"
"Low to moderate. Fatigue. Fever. Maybe brief unconsciousness. But her soul isn't stained. She's clean. That helps."
"Alright. Tomorrow, you'll do it. But only if Maria agrees after hearing the full details."
Zephyra gave a soft hum of acknowledgment. "Understood."
The call ended.
Alex stood, his joints popping faintly as he stretched. Maria, who had been watching him from the hallway, stepped closer.
"They agreed?" she asked softly.
Alex nodded. "You'll get your powers. Zephyra will mark you. But you'll need to be ready for some strain. It won't be pain-free."
Maria swallowed her nerves, then smiled. "I want to do it."
The next day, the ritual was prepared—not a blood-bound ritual, but a symbolic mark, drawn using Zephyra's lightning essence. Maria lay calmly on a ceremonial couch, her eyes closed, her breath steady. Alex stood at her side, holding her hand as Cypher monitored her vitals.
Zephyra's hands glowed red with storm energy.
"Ready?"
Maria gave a nod.
Zephyra placed both hands over her abdomen and chest, pressing gently as arcs of lightning flared through her skin and into Maria's spirit. A storm sigil burned into her body like a tattoo made of light.
Maria cried out once, then clenched her jaw—sweat pouring from her brow. Her body shook for nearly twenty seconds before finally collapsing into unconsciousness.
"She's stable," Cypher confirmed. "Strong spirit. She took it better than most."
Alex sighed, relieved, and covered her with a soft blanket.
By nightfall, Maria awoke.
The first thing she felt was power—warm, electrical, coiled like a slumbering serpent in her chest. She could feel her reflexes had sharpened, her senses slightly more alert. Her veins carried a faint charge now.
Alex smiled at her. "Welcome to the world of the empowered."
Maria blinked, then sat up slowly. "I… feel different. In a good way."
Zephyra leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "Temporary, for now. If your body adapts over the month, we'll reinforce it into permanence."
Maria nodded, determined. "I'll make it work."
Alex stood, satisfied. "Good. Then now we're even stronger."
"Though… you could help her stabilize and adapt to it better," Cypher suddenly said, stepping closer and eyeing him with a knowing look. "Your blood… it's like an elixir to demons. It's sacred. Powerful."
Alex raised an eyebrow. "What are you suggesting?"
"She can become a Demon Worshipper," Cypher explained. "A kind of human who bonds to a demon and draws power from them. Right now, her mark is linked to Zephyra—so she can use that lightning energy. But if you give her a single drop of your blood… and she uses it on the lightning mark… the bond will deepen."
Alex's eyes narrowed slightly, curious. "And the result?"
"It'll stabilize the transformation. Make it permanent. And she'll no longer just be borrowing power—she'll own it. Fully compatible. She'll be stronger, faster, more aware… and she won't burn out."
"But wouldn't that link her to me directly?" he asked.
Cypher smirked. "It would. But that's not a bad thing. You're her Master, aren't you? Besides, you're different from the rest of us. You haven't awakened your own power yet—not your true, innate one."
She stepped closer, voice dropping a little.
"Every ruler-class being has an innate title. Like me—I am the Shadow Ruler. Zephyra is the Hell Lightning Ruler. Those are our true names, our essence. You? You haven't awakened yours yet."
Alex folded his arms. "So when does that happen?"
"It'll happen the moment you take full dominion," Cypher said, her voice firm. "Maybe during your next real evolution… or the next time you face death. When that moment comes, your title will awaken. You'll learn your Origin Name—your true identity, linked to your innate power."
Alex narrowed his eyes. "Is there any way to awaken it faster?"
He looked down at his hand. At most, he could access high-level skills—the system provided tools, like V's skills—but they still felt like game functions. Useful, but not his.
Unlike Cypher, who could summon true shadows and mold them at will, Alex's demonic power—though immense—still felt relentless, raw, and difficult to direct. It was as if he was carrying a sea of mana without a vessel to channel it properly.
Cypher tilted her head. "There is a way to accelerate the awakening. If you can subdue another Baron-Class Demon and make them submit to you, your rank will evolve to Viscount. That jump alone might trigger the awakening of your innate ability."
Alex nodded slowly, absorbing the information.
"Getting another contract isn't easy," he muttered.
But Cypher shook her head. "I wasn't talking about making a contract," she corrected. "I meant subjugation. You don't need to form a bond. You just need to defeat a demon and force them to submit. Once they do, the World recognizes them under your command—and it counts the same."
