Chapter 21: Threadless — Chapter 17
"The world tilted a fraction. And only they noticed."
The next morning, nothing looked different.
The sky was its usual pale gray, the leaves shook with ordinary wind, and the school bell rang exactly on time.
But Aro knew something had changed.
She felt it first in her locker. The number—217—was suddenly 127.
No announcement. No reason. No one else found it strange.
She stood staring at it, fingers just shy of touching the new numberplate.
Jun passed behind her and paused. "You forgot your own locker?"
She turned to him. "Has it always been 127?"
He grinned. "Always has. You've been spacing out a lot lately, huh?"
She looked back at the number.
Always has.
The words felt like static under her skin.
Rin noticed it in the library.
He reached for his usual book—Myths of Rebirth—but found something else in its place.
Same shelf. Same spot. But instead:
"Unwritten Things: A Beginner's Guide."
The spine was warm.
He opened it.
Every page was blank—except one.
Page 17.
A sentence in careful handwriting:
"If the thread remembers you, don't pull."
He snapped the book shut.
His hands smelled faintly of smoke.
That afternoon, they met by the stairwell.
Aro spoke first. "Something's off."
Rin nodded. "It's starting."
Neither of them knew what it was yet.
But they both felt it.
And so did the town.
It just didn't realize it was dreaming someone else's memory.
