They didn't speak for a while.

Just sat there, on the steps of a station that no longer worked, listening to the kind of silence that only comes after something important has almost been said.

The thread didn't glow. The watchers didn't return. But something had shifted.

And though neither of them could name it yet, both understood one thing:

They had stepped off the path.

And now, the path was following them.
