The Ytherrian Luminary

Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Shadows and Secrets

Xalin flew through the skies, his short hair blowing wildly in the magical air currents, as he and Shiri soared toward the domain of the Water Spirits. The wind whispered in his ears, a gentle reminder of his recent training with the Air Spirits, but something felt off. A nagging sensation crept up the back of his neck, making him feel like someone was watching him.

"Do you feel that?" Xalin asked, turning to Shiri, his brow furrowed.

"Feel what?" Shiri replied, looking at him with confusion.

"Like someone is... watching us."

Shiri glanced around, his little body twirling in the air as he checked every direction. "Nope, nothing. Just the two of us flying through these skies."

Xalin tried to shake the feeling, reasoning that perhaps it was just a lingering side effect of his intense training with the Air Spirits. The sensation of always being surrounded by an element as untamed as the wind could make anyone paranoid. Still, the unease clung to him.

"I guess you're right," Xalin said, forcing a smile as they continued toward the water spirits. "It's probably nothing."

Shiri nodded, continuing to babble on about the wonders of spirit training, while Xalin's thoughts remained slightly distracted. His sharp senses, though honed through his training, could still be rattled by the unknown.

Back in the real world, however, chaos reigned.

Kell and Lira stood in a desolate clearing, bloodied and exhausted. They had been fighting for what seemed like hours, their breaths labored, their bodies aching. Hovering behind them, Xalin's body floated above the ground, eyes glowing white, his luminary markings pulsating with divine energy as his spirit traversed the Spirit World. His presence was powerful, but he was unreachable—his mind far away in another plane, leaving Kell and Lira to fend off a dark threat they hadn't anticipated.

The sky above the battlefield was heavy with tension. The wind was unnaturally still, as if even nature itself was holding its breath.

Their enemy? Silas, a man twisted by jealousy and hunger for power. Silas was no ordinary foe—he had attuned himself to the spirits, but unlike Xalin, his connection was not pure. It was corrupt, driven by a thirst to dominate rather than learn. When Xalin had entered the Spirit World, the spirits nearby had sensed it immediately and reported back to Silas. He had been waiting for this opportunity, watching Xalin's growing power and craving it for himself.

"If I could harness the power of the Spirit of Light, imagine what I could do…" Silas had whispered to himself. He believed that by absorbing Xalin's spirit, he could ascend beyond anything even the Luminary had achieved. And now, he stood in front of Kell and Lira, his cold gaze fixated on Xalin's glowing body, indifferent to the protective stances Kell and Lira had taken.

The battle began when Silas approached, his desire to seize Xalin's power burning in his eyes. Kell had stepped forward, drawing on his shadow abilities, casting a wide shadow path toward Silas.

"I'm not asking," Silas said, his voice as cold as ice. "I must have the Spirit of Light."

Before Kell's shadow path could reach him, a spirit materialized in front of Silas, its energy repelling Kell's shadow power, making it ineffective. Kell's heart raced as he watched his strongest ability become useless before his eyes. Lira was equally tense,

"Why now?" Kell thought in desperation, frustration building within him. "Why attack after all these days? Why now?"

Silas smirked as if he had heard Kell's thoughts. "I'll answer that for you," he said casually. Kell's eyes widened in shock. Silas's connection to the spirits was so strong that a nearby spirit was relaying their thoughts directly to him.

"I wanted to see if his spirit was worth taking," Silas said, motioning toward Xalin. "Now, I know it is."

With a sudden shout, Silas unleashed a power neither Kell nor Lira had anticipated. "Possession!" he cried, as a spirit emerged from the shadows behind him. It was a spirit trained in domination, able to control the minds and bodies of others. The spirit, at Silas's command, dove into Kell's shadow, making him freeze in place.

"Kell!" Lira shouted, rushing to his side, but it was too late.

Kell's panic was clear in his eyes for only a moment before it vanished. His body relaxed, his breathing steadied, and a smirk curled on his lips—a smirk that was not his own. When he looked up again, his eyes had changed. They glowed a sickly yellow, his aura now radiating an unsettling, unnatural energy. A spirit had taken control of him.

"Success," Silas muttered, a satisfied grin on his face as he admired his work. Kell, once his own man, now stood ready to do Silas's bidding.

"Kell…" Lira whispered, her voice trembling, unsure of what to do. Her heart raced as she watched her friend—no, her comrade—turn against her. The Kell she had known was gone, replaced by a puppet under Silas's command. The ground beneath her feet felt as though it could collapse at any moment, but she knew she couldn't falter now.

Without warning, Possessed Kell turned his attention to Lira, his smirk deepening as yellow energy flickered around him. He moved with a calm but menacing demeanor, his shadow powers still fully under his control. But now, they were twisted by the spirit that resided within him.

"It's time, Lira," he said, his voice unnervingly steady. "Let's see what you've got."

Lira's blood began to stir within her, responding to her emotions. She clenched her fists, her blood manipulation abilities ready to be unleashed. "Kell, fight it!" she pleaded, knowing her words were in vain. Silas's spirit was firmly in control, and the real Kell was buried deep within.

The moment of hesitation ended.

Kell lunged toward Lira, shadow tendrils reaching out from his body like vipers, ready to strike. Lira braced herself, her eyes narrowing as she prepared to face her possessed friend.

The fight had only just begun.
