Chapter 6: What the heck
Irvin immediately stopped, his body glowing with a golden light that enveloped him. With a wave of his hand, countless golden spears materialized out of thin air.
In the next moment, the golden spears rained down like a storm on the monsters chasing after Bob.
Boom, boom, boom...
The monster horde was momentarily halted, and a few of the weaker ones were instantly killed.
At the same time, the black case on George's back opened, revealing a nearly man-sized black sniper rifle.
He lifted the sniper rifle, aiming directly at the two flying monsters in the sky, channeling his energy into the weapon.
In less than two seconds, he pulled the trigger.
From aiming to shooting, the entire process took less than two seconds.
Bang!
The sniper rifle spat fire, and a special espers bullet sliced through the air, striking one of the flying monsters.
The bullet detonated inside the monster, causing its wings to tear apart, and it plummeted like a meteor.
George didn't even look at the result of his first shot before aiming at the second monster.
In two seconds, the second monster had flown several hundred meters.
Without hesitation, George fired again. The second bullet streaked toward the flying monster.
The monster's body surged with wild energy as it flew, and although the bullet struck it, it detonated outside its body.
Boom!
The second flying monster started to fall but managed to regain its wings and continue flying.
Seeing this, George's eyes flashed with regret, but this was the best he could do.
Meanwhile, Irvin had just held off the monsters when a massive black snake among them spewed a strange black beam from its mouth.
The black beam sliced through the air, hurtling toward Irvin.
Just after unleashing his powerful attack, Irvin barely had time to catch his breath before the black beam was upon him.
"Ha!"
With a low shout, Irvin hastily summoned a golden barrier to block the attack.
Boom!
The collision between the black beam and the golden barrier resulted in a terrifying explosion that sent Irvin and his companions flying.
Not only that, a gruesome wound appeared on Irvin's left arm, and the injury began turning black at a visibly rapid pace.
It was clear that Irvin had paid a heavy price to stop the monsters.
Seeing this, Iris, who had just gotten back on her feet, quickly rushed over to him, extending her pale arm. "Captain, bite me."
Without hesitation, Irvin bit down, sucking Iris's blood.
"Mm... Ahh..."
Her face flushed red as she let out a soft moan.
As Irvin drank Iris's blood, her wound began to heal at a speed visible to the naked eye. Although he couldn't fully expel the energy from the injury, it was no longer life-threatening.
"What are you spacing out for? Let's go!"
Catching his breath, Irvin grabbed Iris and continued running.
Just as they left, a barrage of strange and deadly attacks rained down on the area they had just vacated, obliterating everything.
Within the White Mist Zone, the three of them faced countless dangers but managed to survive each time. They fought while retreating and soon emerged from the forest, entering another plain.
The world inside the White Mist Zone defied human understanding. Sometimes the area would be a plain, and the next would be a desert—they had long since grown accustomed to this.
From the outside, the White Mist Zone seemed to span only a few hundred kilometers in diameter, but once inside, the area expanded by tenfold, becoming an entire world of its own.
As they reached the plain, the three could just make out the white barrier of the zone in the distance.
They were almost out!
Seeing this, the trio's spirits lifted, and they picked up speed again.
As they ran, George suddenly paused. "Captain, there's something suspicious up ahead!"
Hmm?
Irvin looked in the direction George indicated, and a moment later, he froze in place.
On a small hillside near the edge of the White Mist Zone, there was a figure that resembled a young boy.
Of course, if that were all, it wouldn't have been too surprising. espers at level C and above had the ability to resist the rules of the White Mist Zone.
Although this secret wasn't known to the public, it wasn't a secret among high-level espers.
But what shocked the three of them was what the boy was doing!
On the hillside, the boy was sitting on a modern chair.
Next to him was a wooden table with several freshly picked wild vegetables and a large plate of sliced meat.
In front of him, a large iron pot was bubbling over a fire, with rich aromas wafting through the air on a light breeze.
When the trio caught the scent of the food, they were collectively dumbfounded.
Was this... hotpot?
Now that Anthony understood the rules of the White Mist Zone and realized that his blindness was a sign of his espers awakening, he had given up on the idea of getting himself killed.
Maybe one day, when his espers ability fully Espers, he would be able to leave the zone.
After eating a few pieces of stew, Anthony once again triggered his blindness and saw the zone's rules. This time, he focused and memorized all of them.
He realized that he could avoid all those dozens of rules.
So, Anthony stopped wandering. It was too cold outside the zone, so he simply decided to build a fire and cook inside the zone.
Which led to the current situation.
At that moment, Anthony was happily munching on his meal, his mouth glistening with oil. The hotpot seasoning he was using was a treasure he had been saving for a long time.
As for the monster meat, Anthony had no idea what level it was, but every time he ate it, he experienced blindness—an effect that was rather potent.
Just as he was eating, Anthony suddenly felt the ground trembling.
He instinctively turned his head and was startled by what he saw.
In the distance, three figures were running for their lives, with dozens of terrifying monsters chasing after them.
What the heck!
Anthony had been wondering why he hadn't seen any monsters—turns out they had been led away by someone else.
And now, as luck would have it, they were headed straight for him.
Anthony's face darkened. He was just trying to enjoy a hotpot—why was trouble finding him?
There was no time to pack up his things. Anthony dropped his chopsticks and bolted toward the edge of the White Mist Zone.
He had deliberately stayed within a few dozen meters of the white barrier so he could make a quick escape if he spotted any monsters.
Within seconds, Anthony had reached the barrier and slipped through it.
