Chapter 125
At first, I had considered wearing a maid outfit.
If I were to take on the role of a maid, I thought I might as well do it properly. This was to ensure that Anna wouldn’t dare utter a word of complaint.
‘But then again, the idea of a ducal noblewoman wearing a maid outfit feels a bit off.’
If this were the ducal family’s residence, imagine me donning a maid’s attire just for fun.
I would have been scolded terribly. They would have scorned me, questioning what kind of nonsense a ducal noblewoman was up to.
So, there was some psychological resistance on my part.
More importantly, maid outfits weren’t exactly easy to come by.
The maid outfits at cosplay shops seemed overly modified from my perspective as a ducal noblewoman. They felt somewhat distant from the traditional maid uniforms.
It was as if I could slightly understand how Italians must feel when they see iced Americanos.
Thus, I decided to change my approach entirely.
In reality, the concept of a maid doesn’t really exist much in the modern era.
In Korea, instead of maids, there were things like “drivers,” “bodyguards,” or “housekeepers.”
That meant that simply dressing neatly in a suit could sufficiently embody a modern maid.
‘And isn’t it cost-effective as well?’
How often would I even wear a maid outfit in the future?
If I were a face-cam streamer, I might have tried a cosplay broadcast, but as a VTuber who hides her face, there might not even be another opportunity to wear it.
On the other hand, there could be more occasions to wear a suit. Attending events, for instance.
Plus, don’t distinguished figures also wear suits?
So, wearing a suit wouldn’t compromise my authority as a ducal noblewoman, unlike a maid outfit.
In other words, it was financially beneficial, didn’t harm my authority, and achieved the artistic representation of a modern maid. Truly, I was the 100% ducal noblewoman maid.
“Wow… You’re so beautiful.”
That day, when I visited Anna’s house in my suit, Anna stared at me in a daze.
Her gaze brimmed with desire, not unlike Mero’s.
“How could this be…? I feel like I might cry. They say that when a person is deeply moved, their tear glands are stimulated…”
“I’m glad you’re happy.”
“…Can I cry in your arms, Laura-chan?”
“That won’t do.”
My clothes would get wet.
So Anna had no choice but to sulk in the corner and sniffle.
“So, for the next week, Laura-chan will be my personal maid, right? You’ll do whatever I say!”
“If it’s a command I can follow. If it’s a command I can follow.”
“…Why are you emphasizing that so much?”
Though I became Anna’s maid, the fundamental dynamic between us remained unchanged.
Even in aristocratic society, higher rank didn’t mean everything.
For instance, even if someone was the emperor’s son, they wouldn’t automatically hold more authority than a ducal noblewoman.
Power could only be wielded by those with influence. If someone like the emperor’s eighth son, born of a concubine, had no backing, they wouldn’t even dare challenge a ducal noblewoman.
In that sense, Anna was a powerless boss, just a figurehead.
Even Anna subtly recognized it. She knew that while she could temporarily place me beneath her, she could never truly dominate me.
“Still, somehow, it’s exciting! It means we’ll be spending a week together!”
Anna seemed satisfied with just that.
“Anna, that’s precisely the problem.”
“Oh, you’re speaking so formally! It’s refreshing, but it feels a bit too stiff and scary.”
“You’re quite demanding for a lady, aren’t you? The problem is that the two of us have to stay in this pigsty.”
I looked around the room as I spoke.
In one corner of the kitchen, there were small piles of boxes. Most were empty chicken and pizza boxes.
On the floor were scattered 2L water bottles and 1.5L zero cola bottles. Occasionally, there were 500ml low-calorie coffee bottles mixed in.
On the desk, there were several plastic cups that seemed to have come from a café. A small amount of watery liquid had pooled in some, likely from melted ice left behind after the drink was finished.
The bed was covered in a mess of clothes.
Mostly outdoor clothes. Thick pants, in particular.
It was obvious.
Given the winter season in December, you couldn’t go to the convenience store in pajamas. The strategy was to leave the top as pajamas and simply change into pants, throwing on a coat over them.
Upon returning home, the suffocating coat and pants would be tossed onto the bed, and she’d change back into her original pajamas.
Thus, the bed wasn’t serving its proper purpose. It was occupied mostly by clothes.
In the living room, there were unopened packs of chicken radish and unused ketchup or honey mustard sauce packets lying around.
“A pigsty…! That’s too harsh!”
“Then how else would you describe this mess?”
“At least call it a stable!”
She seemed to know it was dirty.
In any case, Anna’s house was filthy.
If I were still a ducal noblewoman, it would’ve been unthinkable for me to set foot in such a place. The discomfort was immense.
But as a maid, I had to endure it. Fortunately, I had an unusually strong stomach for someone of my status.
After all, wasn’t this still far better than being homeless?
“What should we do, Laura-chan?”
“What do you mean? Isn’t it obvious what we should do?”
I was dumbfounded.
“Can’t we just live like this?”
***
The day after I spent a dazzling first day with Anna.
We were being scolded by Rion.
“I can’t live like this!”
Rion was shouting as she looked beyond the open door.
The place was a literal garbage dump.
Plastic bags filled with water bottles, cola bottles, and coffee bottles were lined up against one corner of the wall.
For reference, those bags weren’t proper trash bags. They were large plastic bags usually used for food delivery packaging, being temporarily utilized.
Plastic forks, emptied but still dyed with food coloring plastic cups, and small side dish containers that once held things like kimchi or pickled radishes were stuffed into the bags and piled up.
Chicken boxes that couldn’t fit into the bags were stacked, along with the pizza box Anna and I had shared the day before, tossed casually on top.
Next to that was a paper bag that had once held burgers and fries, its greasy stains now visible as it rolled across the floor.
It was the result of hastily tidying up all the trash in the house and shoving it into a single room.
“I came here because I had a bad feeling, but what the hell is this mess!”
“We tried to do some light sorting for recycling.”
“What’s the point of separating it if you didn’t even rinse anything properly?”
I knew she was right, but washing everything had felt overwhelmingly tedious.
The sink was already overflowing with dirty dishes that had been left unattended for ages. Adding delivery containers to the washing list just made my head hurt.
So I’d decided to shove everything into a corner of the room for the time being and think about it later.
“I knew this would happen, seriously!”
In the end, Rion, unable to tolerate the mess, took it upon herself to start cleaning.
The piled-up dishes were thoroughly washed, and exemplary recycling sorting began.
The vacuum cleaner sucked up every speck of dust in the room, and even mopping was done meticulously.
Ventilation was also properly taken care of.
It took quite some time, but thanks to Rion’s solitary effort, Anna’s house was restored to a livable state.
“You did well, Rion.”
“…Why are you acting so high and mighty, unnie?”
Having finished all the cleaning, Rion let out a long sigh.
“You said you were Anna’s maid. Shouldn’t a maid do some cleaning?”
“It seems you’re not familiar with the types of maids, Rion.”
If we were talking about a housekeeper-level maid, cleaning would be something left to lower-ranked maids.
And in modern terms, I was more like a chief secretary.
Would a chief secretary personally handle cleaning?
“You’ve got to be kidding me…”
Rion pressed her hand to her forehead as if her head was starting to ache.
“Are you sure you can even last a week like this…?”
“Don’t worry. We can manage.”
“Which means you’re not going to clean from now on either… Ugh… Fine. Let’s talk, Anna.”
“Talk about what?”
“Do you think I came here to clean because I’m some housekeeper?”
That’s what I assumed, but was I wrong?
“…Of course not. I’m here as your manager today.”
“Oh, right. You were also Anna’s manager.”
“Yeah. Originally, I was only supposed to manage Anna for a certain period, but I decided to just stick with it permanently.”
Apparently, EYEAI had slightly increased its staff recently.
As a result, a few VTubers were scheduled to have their managers replaced soon.
“I think I’ll also be managing Sora unnie. Laura unnie, Sora unnie, and Anna—you three will be grouped under me for the time being.”
“Because of the Fantasy League?”
“Exactly.”
Rion nodded.
“Let me get straight to the point, unnie. Before the league kicks off, pick a song for the MV.”
