The New Elemental God

Chapter 3: Chapter 1.1 - Little Joke

They had been friends since the first year of high school. Adam saw some boys pick on him because apparently his sneakers were dirty or something, it was ridiculous. Pissed, the boy got to the circle of assholes and called them off. He warned them that his father owned the school and that he would get them all expelled if they messed with anyone ever again. Of course his father didn't own the place, but he might as well have.

After that they began to do everything together, partying, travelling, fighting for the same girls to almost getting arrested. Adam trusted Finn with his soul.

"The guy talks too much. Everything has to be about him." He recognized Rick's voice.

"I don't know what's up with his cake fetish but I'm digging it." Finn spoke up in a low seductive tone, and next Adam heard kissing noises. Involuntarily, the Playboy's heart choked him.

Thinking back, Adam didn't hear anyone else besides the four of them. Maybe this person was in a blind spot, which was odd since they didn't hang out with anyone else.

"Hey, we are right here!" Bob protested and the boy's insides twisted causing an actual stomach ache.

Adam was stuck, as if time had stopped for him and all he could do was listen to those familiar voices talk about him as if he was a plague.

"Guys, it's not so bad." It was Jenifer's voice. Instantly Adam held his breath. His heart was beating on his ears, punching his chest with every loud beat. "We'll eat some of his dumb cake and then we can all say we have stuff to do in the morning, so we can leave and start celebrating for real!"

Inside his sleeves, the melting frosting was sliding down his elbow, causing an agonizing sensation. Although he wanted to get in there and face them, the Playboy couldn't move. His legs didn't respond and his arms were stiff as rocks.

"You mean we are going out and you two are going to screw in the club's restroom, right?"

Ricks's words entered Adam's brain but didn't get processed. He knew what they meant but he did not believe them. It was like watching a cutscene in a game. He couldn't skip it, he was stuck and had to watch in order to keep playing.

"Watch out, bro." Finn sounded stressed with Rick. "My lady here is a respectful business woman."

Female giggles triggered the boy, it sounded different from what he remembered, more genuine. Adam felt his arms weaken with the weight of the cake. The frosting had soaked his jacket but he didn't care anymore.

"We don't fuck in club restrooms." Jenifer was the one to speak up. Adam's vision was getting blurry, as if there was something in his eyes. "Just company bathrooms!"

Finn cracked a disgusting laugh and was joined by the other boys. Like a brainless zombie, the Playboy took a step forward leaving the support of the wall. In his stomach, Adam felt sick, the smell of strawberry was making him dizzy.

The laughter and the toasting noises were just in the deep background of his mind. Adam felt hollow as he took another step into the light of the study.

Suddenly the noise stopped. Feeling his arms lose their strength completely, he dropped the white cake that splashed itself on the ground. Jenifer was on Finn's lap with her arms wrapped around his neck while he had his hands on her thighs. Strawberries flew everywhere and the red velvet interior looked like blood over the white floors.

"Adam?!"

Jenifer's voice broke the deadly silence. Adam's eyes got clearer, as if a burden fell off them. Looking at her expression of shock, he did not recognize the girl.

"What are you doing here?"

She was standing in front of Finn who was sitting with his legs wide open on his father's chair. The traitor didn't look scared, the opposite, he looked satisfied, happy even.

While he was listening in secret, Adam felt a lot of things in a short period of time. But as he stood in front of people he considered his only friends, he felt absolutely nothing. Not a wish to yell, or hit anyone. Adam was numb and without saying a single word he stepped over the destroyed cake. Leaving the diamond behind covered in melted frosting.

As her boyfriend didn't respond, she approached him hesitantly and tried again.

"Adam!" The desolated boy kept walking, looking straight since there was no one he knew there. "We were just messing around. How long have you been there?"

Seeing that her efforts to gauge how much he had heard had failed, the cheater assumed he had heard it all. Obviously desperate, Jenifer followed him to the door.

"Hey, let's talk about this. Why are you crying over a little joke, babe?"

Adam's eyes were hurting. Despite blinking roughly, he didn't know what was causing the constant blurriness. It didn't matter anyway, he could still find the door. Quiet and feeling a headache fall down on him, he turned the inner key.

"Finn, do something!" Jenifer barred the door with her hand.

Adam's head was so heavy he could barely hold it up. Tired of fighting to look forward, he dropped his head. The first thing he saw was Jenifer's shoes. He bought it for her interview in his company. It was black pointed mid-height with a strap that wrapped around the back of the heel. Adam didn't know much about women's shoes but he thought it made her look sexy and professional.

"Let him go. We don't need him anymore."

Finn's words hit a new place inside Adam. Somewhere he didn't know existed. It felt cold, something like a whip of winter wind busting a window open in an empty house. Watching himself from outside his body, the boy thought he had to say something, fight back. However, in reality, he was too tired to do or say anything. Adam just wanted to leave that study and never come back.

"Shut up!" Jenifer yelled at Finn aggressively.

Again Adam tried to open the door but she shut it in his face.

"Adam, look at me. Let's talk…"

Using his last thread of strength, the tired boy dragged his eyes up to look at her.
