Chapter 24: Who Is Harrison Wells? – (REMAKE )
The investigation into Harrison Wells had been a slow burn, a simmering pot of suspicion that was finally about to boil over. Joe and Cisco were in Starling City, following a lead about a cold case, a car accident years ago involving the real Harrison Wells. Adam, back in Central City, was ostensibly "monitoring" the comms, but really, he was just waiting for the inevitable.
" The truth will out! And by 'out,' I mean, I'll just leave a few breadcrumbs for Cisco to trip over. My conscience is clear. Mostly."
He knew the crucial piece of evidence: the skeleton. The real Harrison Wells's skeleton, buried in a shallow grave near the accident site. And he knew Cisco would be the one to find it. But he had to make sure they looked in the right place.
"Hey, Cisco," Adam said over the comms, trying to sound casual. "You know, when you're looking for something that's been buried for a long time, sometimes the ground itself tells a story. Like, what if the soil composition is different? Or if there's a weird energy signature? Just a hunch. My 'enhanced common sense' is screaming 'disturbed earth!'"
Cisco, ever the tech enthusiast, immediately picked up on it. "Disturbed earth? Hmm, good point, Adam! Maybe I can run a geo-scan."
Meanwhile, Adam was on his own mission: money. He needed to hit the next fund tier for his next System Upgrade. $2,000,000. It was a lot. But he had a plan. A very elaborate, very sneaky plan.
He'd identified a local art collector, a notoriously corrupt individual who dealt in stolen artifacts. Adam, using his 'Technopathic Interface' and 'Enhanced Deception Detection,' orchestrated a series of "glitches" in the collector's security system, making it appear as though the place was being haunted by a very clumsy ghost. He then, using his 'Urban Navigation' and 'Stealth & Infiltration' (a skill he'd picked up from a particularly sneaky cat burglar), "found" a hidden stash of cash and untraceable jewels. He "anonymously" tipped off the police about the stolen artifacts (minus a significant cut for himself, of course). It wasn't stealing, not really. More like… a very aggressive, very profitable form of cosmic justice.
" Who knew being a semi-immortal, meta-knowledge-infused financial scavenger could be so lucrative? It's not exactly 'Ocean's Eleven,' but it gets the job done. And no one's getting hurt. Except maybe the occasional corrupt art collector's ego."
Back on the comms, Cisco's voice crackled with excitement. "Joe! I'm getting a weird reading! A temporal anomaly! Right here!"
Adam felt a surge of triumph. They were close. So close.
Then, Cisco's voice, filled with a dawning horror. "Oh my god. Joe. It's a skeleton. And it's… it's Harrison Wells."
Adam closed his eyes, a grim satisfaction settling in his chest. The truth was out. Or at least, the big piece of it.
Later, back in Central City, the atmosphere in S.T.A.R. Labs was heavy. Barry was in shock. Caitlin was in disbelief. Cisco was heartbroken, feeling the betrayal most acutely. Joe, however, was grimly determined.
"He's been lying to us," Cisco whispered, tears in his eyes. "All this time. He killed Nora Allen. He killed the real Wells. He's the Reverse-Flash."
"I know, Cisco," Adam said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "I know it hurts. But you figured it out. You found the truth. That's what matters."
He looked at Wells, who sat in his wheelchair, observing them with a chilling calm. Wells met his gaze, and for a split second, Adam saw a flicker of something in his eyes. Not anger. Not fear. Something akin to… respect. A twisted, terrifying respect.
" He knows I knew. He knows I helped them. This is going to make the next confrontation even more personal. And even more dangerous. But at least now, we're all on the same page. Mostly."
Adam felt the System hum. He had accumulated enough funds. The next upgrade was ready.
[SYSTEM ALERT: FUNDS ACCUMULATION TIER MET! $2,000,000 ACQUIRED!]
[SYSTEM UPGRADE READY! INITIATE UPGRADE TO LEVEL 5?]
"Oh, you bet your sweet bippy I'm initiating that upgrade," Adam muttered, a grim smile on his face. He was ready. Ready for the final confrontation. Ready for whatever Thawne threw at them. And ready for more lives. Because he had a feeling he was going to need them.
