Chapter 77
Shan Yu picked up the shoes and took a closer look, finding that there were gold and silver threads hooked onto the cloth shoes, and the blood was still wet on them.
Judging by the size of the shoe, its owner should be a man no more than 1.8 meters tall, or perhaps a young man.
Shan Yu threw the shoes into his backpack and muttered to himself that it must trouble.
Originally, he planned to leave the Deadly Forest, which contained many precious resources, as a refuge for Wan Qiu and Grandpa Yaba, but he didn’t expect a bloody shoe to suddenly appear.
If he didn’t investigate clearly, how could he rest assured?
The three of them walked a long distance along the bloodstains in the grass and came to a flower field.
“Husband, what kind of flower is this? It grows so tall, like a reed swamp, and looks so strange.” There were all kinds of peculiar plants in the Deadly Forest. Wan Qiu never heard of them, let alone saw them, and was very curious.
“Shh!” Shan Yu signalled Wan Qiu to be quiet, picked up a few stones, and threw them into the flower field, startling a large number of birds.
Shan Yu watched nervously and, after a moment, pointed in a direction. “The person should be there.”
Wan Qiu asked in a low voice, “How did you know, husband?”
“There are no birds flying there,” Shan Yu explained simply, asking Wan Qiu and Grandpa Yaba to stay where they were while he moved closer to investigate.
A cold wind should be blowing in the winter, but in the Deadly Forest, it was like spring all year round. The long wind carried the fragrance of sweet peppery flowers that had been warmed by the sun. As other smells faintly mingled in, Shan Yu stopped.
He pushed aside the flower stalks in front of him and saw a person laying a few meters away.
The clothes were stained with blood, the hair was dirty, and one foot was bare; there was no sign of life at all.
Shan Yu was too far away to see the person’s face clearly, but he could only hear a low whimper, like a cat meowing or a baby crying weakly.
Shan Yu took off his guard, stood up, and was about to walk over when he suddenly heard a sound of something breaking through the air behind him. As the distance continued to close, a strong and bloody murderous aura assaulted his nostrils.
Not good! Careless!
When Shan Yu realized this, he instinctively tried to dodge, but it was already too late.
A snake-like whip wrapped tightly around his neck, and the violent suffocation made Shan Yu’s mind go blank. As he fell backward, he lost all resistance.
The person who used the whip to sneak attack him was clearly filled with murderous intent. They grabbed Shan Yu’s neck and dragged him with force. When it was finally let go, the person didn’t release Shan Yu, but also lost their strength.
.
Days of running for her life had exhausted all of Linlang’s energy. The injuries on her body hadn’t yet healed and the many days of starvation made it difficult for her to hold on. The whip had been her last remaining defence, and now…
Linlang couldn’t hold the whip handle in her hand, so she simply threw it aside and reached for the dagger hidden in the sole of her boot.
Before she died, she was determined to protect Lian Zhou and her newborn nephew.
Linlang spat out the blood in her mouth and was too exhausted to wipe the dense sweat from her forehead. She walked slowly toward the man on the ground, whether dead or alive. Her only thought was to kill the man who had discovered them.
The bloody smell and murderous intent on her body were intense. Shan Yu silently gathered strength despite the violent dizziness and prepared to fight back.
Both of them were struggling on the edge of life and death, each determined to ensure the other’s demise. But…
When Linlang pushed aside the flowers obstructing her view and raised her knife to get a closer look at Shan Yu’s face, and Shan Yu kicked her hard in the chest, they were both shocked!
“It’s you?!”
The moment Shan Yu recognized Linlang, before she could react, she suddenly closed her eyes and fell straight toward him, causing him to suffer another blow. To make matters worse, the dagger in Linlang’s hand was driven squarely between his legs…
Someone with a leaky crotch: “!”
Wan Qiu, who just swinged his hoe at Linlang, pushed the girl away under Shan Yu’s intense gaze, and went to untie the whip wrapped around his neck. He asked anxiously, “How are you, husband? Are you okay?”
Shan Yu was almost in serious trouble. He covered his neck and took a few sharp breaths. His first reaction was to throw away the dagger that had been driven between his legs, then he tightened his legs and looked at Wan Qiu with horrified eyes.
Was this person here to save him or harm him?
Wan Qiu, seeing his husband covering his crotch, was also scared that the man had injured the part necessary for future children. His hands trembled with fear. “Husband, what’s wrong with you? Are you hurt? Let me take a look.”
Shan Yu was so frightened and couldn’t react until his crotch was blown hard by the sudden cold wind. Wan Qiu touched it, patted his chest, and breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s okay, it’s okay. Don’t worry, husband, it wasn’t hurt. It’s still usable.”
Shan Yu: “?”
Did he really care about him, or was he just concerned about his happiness?
.
Lian Zhou was right in front of Shan Yu, but he didn’t look the same at all.
His clothes were bloody and dirty, and scars were visible all over his body. Shan Yu touched his thin and pretty face, and when his eyes focused on Lian Zhou’s eyes, wrapped with ribbons, he couldn’t help but trembled and shed a tear.
Having been together day and night for more than twenty years, Lian Zhou was not just a friend, a brother, and a relative to Shan Yu; he also cared for and doted on him like a younger brother.
Now that Lian Zhou had become like this, apart from the inevitable heartache and sadness, Shan Yu also felt a lot of self-blame.
Shan Yu was heartbroken, thinking that if he had been tougher in his attitude and disciplined Lian Zhou more strictly… perhaps Lian Zhou wouldn’t have ended up in such a miserable state?
When Wan Qiu and Grandpa Yaba returned from collecting medicine, Shan Yu had already calmed his emotions. Only the wet marks at the corners of his eyes that had not yet dried up told Wan Qiu that his husband might have cried.
“Husband, it’s getting dark. What should we do? Should we take them back?”
Shan Yu was silent. He held the weakly crying baby in his arms and looked at the unconscious Lian Zhou and Linlang on the ground, unsure of what to do.
The two men were obviously evading pursuit. Judging by their embarrassment and injuries, it was very likely that their pursuers would not capture them alive.
Shan Yu couldn’t take them home, and he didn’t trust leaving them here. But with the battle looming the next day, even though he had all sorts of plans and calculations, he didn’t have the time to act.
It was a real dilemma.
At that moment, Shan Yu’s desire to become a deserter grew stronger. He had no choice but to go to the battlefield. If it weren’t for the Wan Qiu and the fear of implicating others, he would have run away long ago. Now, with Lian Zhou suddenly appearing in front of him, clinging to life, he was more determined to go against the court.
Shan Yu’s thoughts were conflicted. As he remained silent, the stars lit up the sky, and the moon quietly climbed the treetops.
Wan Qiu remembered the little one he had not fed for a whole day at home. He wanted to urge Shan Yu to make a decision quickly but saw his eyes fixed on Lian Zhou, leaving him speechless.
Forget it, for his husband, perhaps Lian Zhou…
Was more important.
