The CEO's Hidden Wife

Chapter 11: Building trust

The next few days after their reconciliation were quiet, almost painfully so. Lena and Dominic had agreed to start fresh, but the weight of their past hung between them like a lingering fog. Neither of them expected things to instantly change. Trust, they both knew, had to be earned. And while the promise of a new beginning was there, the road ahead still felt uncertain.

At the office, things returned to their usual rhythm. Dominic remained focused on work, his determination unwavering as ever. But there was a subtle difference in his approach. He wasn't as cold or distant as before. He was more present, more engaged in meetings with Lena, and although there was still some unspoken tension, there was a sense of mutual respect that hadn't existed before.

Lena, for her part, was trying to balance her feelings. She couldn't deny that something had shifted between them. There were moments where she caught him looking at her differently—his gaze softer, more searching—but just as quickly, he would turn back into the distant, efficient CEO she had first met. Yet, for the first time, she was no longer afraid to challenge him, to speak her mind. She had made her feelings known, and though it was still a rocky road, she could feel the foundation they were slowly building between them.

One evening, as Lena was working late, Dominic entered her office. He had never been the one to drop by casually—he was always a man of purpose, a man with an agenda. But tonight, something felt different. The usual air of authority had softened into something more personal.

"Lena, do you have a moment?" he asked, standing by the door, his tone casual, but his eyes seemed to hold something more.

Lena put down the pen she was holding, raising an eyebrow at him. "Of course. What's on your mind?"

He stepped into her office, his expression thoughtful. "I wanted to talk about the upcoming presentation for the investors. I've been going over the figures, but I think we need to revise the strategy before we present it to them."

Lena nodded, ready to dive into work. Business was always something she could rely on to bring them back to neutral ground.

"Alright, what do you have in mind?" she asked, motioning for him to take a seat.

He sat down across from her, and for a moment, he didn't speak. Instead, he just looked at her, his brow furrowing slightly, as if weighing something important. Lena watched him carefully, waiting for him to continue.

"I've been thinking about how we've been working together," he said slowly. "And I wanted to make sure you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts with me. I know that I've been difficult, and I haven't always been the easiest to approach."

Lena blinked, surprised by his openness. "Well, that's an understatement," she said with a slight chuckle, trying to keep the mood light.

Dominic smiled faintly, but the tension in his jaw was still there. "I'm serious, Lena. I don't want to be the boss who only gives orders. I want to know what you think, what you believe is best for the company."

Lena met his gaze, searching his eyes for any hint of insincerity, but there was none. She could feel the genuine intent in his words. For the first time, Dominic wasn't just dictating what needed to be done; he was acknowledging her contributions, her intellect, her worth beyond the marriage contract.

"I appreciate that," she said, her voice steady. "I've been trying to make sure my ideas are heard. I know we've had our differences, but I think we can do great things together if we actually start trusting each other."

Dominic nodded, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Trust. That's the key, isn't it? We both have to trust each other. Not just professionally, but personally, too. I won't pretend that I've always been open to that. But I'm trying, Lena. I really am."

The sincerity in his voice made something warm stir in Lena's chest. She had always known that trust didn't come easy for him, but this—this was different. He wasn't just telling her what she wanted to hear; he was acknowledging the mistakes he had made and was willing to work on them.

"I'm trying too," she admitted, her heart racing a little faster than she expected. "It's not easy for me either. But if we want this—us, this partnership—to work, we have to let go of the walls we've built. All of them."

He leaned back in his chair, his gaze thoughtful. "I know. And I want to. I want to see you as more than just my wife on paper. I want to see you as someone I can rely on, someone I can respect."

Her heart fluttered at his words, but she quickly swallowed the emotions that threatened to rise to the surface. They were getting closer, but they still had so much to navigate.

"Well, we'll need time," she said, smiling softly. "But we're getting there."

Dominic met her eyes again, and this time, there was no mask, no CEO persona. Just a man, vulnerable in his own way, who was starting to understand that maybe, just maybe, he didn't have all the answers.

The conversation shifted back to the business at hand, but the air in the room felt lighter. It wasn't perfect, but it was progress. They were building something, slowly but surely—a foundation that was stronger than before, one brick at a time.

Later that evening, as Lena headed home, she felt a sense of cautious optimism she hadn't experienced in a while. Trust was being built, piece by piece, and for the first time in their marriage, Lena believed that maybe this partnership wasn't as impossible as she had once thought.
