Surviving as Guan Yu in the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 27 - Liu Bei Needs Taishi Ci (3)

Even though we were in ambush, they were marching very peacefully, completely unaware of us.

The soldiers were dragging their spear shafts on the ground, walking sluggishly while chatting, and even the mounted officers weren’t wearing their armor.

It’s clear evidence that they haven’t noticed our presence at all.

“What’s for dinner today?”
“We’re on the march, isn’t it obvious? Probably porridge made with dried rice and water, and some pickled vegetables.”
“Why is the food like this, really?”

If you change a few words there, it’s exactly the same conversation we had during military service in Korea.

As expected, soldiers’ lives are pretty much the same in any era.

“Hey, this won’t do. Today, Sergeant Oh will bring out some beef jerky. Put the jerky in the porridge when you eat.”

Zhang Fei, who was eavesdropping on this conversation beside me, asked in a very low voice.

“Their discipline has completely collapsed, hasn’t it?”

Looking at that scene, we can certainly tell they haven’t noticed us, but we can’t say their discipline has completely collapsed.

Usually, chatting during a march could result in execution for violating military law, but that only applies when the war situation is urgent.

As for armor, they only wear it when marching right before encountering the enemy or when there’s a high possibility of encountering them. When there’s no concern about meeting the enemy, it’s normal to march without armor.

So it’s too early to judge them as an undisciplined army based on just that.

“They didn’t even send out scouts, brother.”

Even if this is their backyard, when an army is moving, they should at least pretend to scout. This is crossing the line a bit too much.

I understand that the military organization tends to be lax within acceptable limits in any era.

But if you’re at war with the enemy, you should send out scouts even in your own front yard.

“This might end more easily than we thought.”

Just as I said that, Liu Bei signaled everyone with a hand gesture.

All the archers under Liu Bei’s command drew their bowstrings, and the regular soldiers with spears picked up rocks.

We all waited for the signal, holding our breath.

Now, as soon as Liu Bei gives the signal, those guys walking around carefreely down there will soon have their skulls cracked.

“Now!”

As soon as those words ended, a whistling arrow (an arrow that makes noise) crossed the sky.

When the whistle sound rang out, the attention of those who had been walking without a care turned to the direction where the whistling arrow was shot.

“Enemy! There’s an enemy over there!”
“It’s an ambush! An ambush, damn it!”
“Aaargh, Mom!”

As soon as they realized they were being ambushed, the bastards started to panic.

If their reason was working properly, they would point their spears in our direction and gather as much as possible, or try to hide behind livestock like cows or horses or behind carts.

But they all seem to be completely lost, just turning their heads left and right and looking around.

Well, it’s actually better for us if they panic and don’t know what to do.

“Now’s the time, shoot and throw like crazy! Make a complete mess!”

I gave that order and casually threw a rock about the size of my head.

That rock smashed the skull of some unknown enemy.

The ambushed enemy troops couldn’t regain their senses and were overwhelmed by the subsequent shower of arrows and rocks from our soldiers.

“Help! Save me!”
“Wait, weren’t there supposed to be no troops under the Governor of Qing Province here?”

If we had faced them on the battlefield, they wouldn’t have been swept away so easily.

They would have had some armored soldiers, and they would have moved under the control of their officers in formation, not just being helplessly attacked.

But now, they’ve been hit from behind in a situation they’re completely unprepared for…

These soldiers are making a fuss like fish flapping out of water.

If it were the soldiers I lead or our allies behaving like that, my heart would have been torn, but seeing the rebel bastards like this is even funny.

Zhang Fei beside me laughed out loud even in this situation.

“Look, look at that! If they want to live, they should think about fighting or escaping.”

While saying that, he kept moving his hands, throwing rocks and hitting the enemies.

Even though I’m possessing Guan Yu’s body, if I were ambushed and saw the enemy laughing out loud like Zhang Fei while throwing rocks and killing my comrades, my whole body would be trembling.

The other enemies down there must be terrified to the point of wetting themselves.

However, Zhang Fei’s behavior seems to boost the morale of our soldiers, as the other soldiers continued their attacks more vigorously after seeing him.

“Oh, good! A hit!”
“We can’t keep losing to Commander Zhang!”
“Kill them all, don’t leave a single one alive!”

The officers of the enemy supply unit were running around frantically, trying to somehow control the situation.

“Everyone, calm down and hide behind the carts, cows, and horses! You can survive that way!”
“Hide your bodies until the enemy’s one-sided attack ends!”

As they say, a rotten fish is still a fish. Even though they must be dazed from being hit hard from behind, they’re regaining their senses and giving the right orders?

If we let guys like that live, our casualties will increase, so we need to kill them as soon as possible.

I put down the rock and took out the bow strapped to my back, drawing the bowstring.

Although I had never shot a bow even once when I was in Korea, just like how I became a master of the Green Dragon Crescent Blade without ever having held a spear in my life…

As soon as I grabbed the bow, I could feel how to shoot and hit that officer showing off down there with one shot.

Trusting my instincts, I aimed the bow and released the string, piercing that officer’s heart.

“Ugh!”

And the officer nearby fell in the same way.

Looking at the direction the arrow flew, I saw Taishi Ci standing there.

As expected, it’s the skill befitting Taishi Ci, a general too precious to give to Sun Ce.

I must find a way to bring him under Liu Bei’s command.

As even the enemy officers started dying at our hands, the already demoralized soldiers of the enemy supply unit fell into great confusion.

While there were some who were trying to do something until just now, now there were even those who turned their backs and openly attempted to desert.

“Aagh, spare me! Help!”

They’re so overwhelmed that they don’t even have the leisure to catch or care about their own soldiers openly deserting.

Seeing this, an unrelated thought comes to mind.

‘Being stabbed gently by a knife doesn’t hurt less, but knowing you’re going to be stabbed results in less injury.’

The person who said this explained that when you know you’re going to be stabbed, the muscles in that area tense up quickly and contract strongly, resulting in less bleeding and less knife penetration.

But if you’re stabbed from behind without knowing, your reaction is slower, increasing the chances of death.

It sounded really absurd, but the current situation seems similar to this.

If they had known we were coming like this, they probably wouldn’t have suffered this much from just this level of attack.

They probably would have survived somehow, even if by hiding behind cows or horses as the officers who were running around said.

Not that it changes anything to assume that now.

After confirming that the enemy had completely lost the ability to counterattack, Liu Bei drew her twin swords.

“Everyone, charge!! Suppress the rebels!”

With those words, Liu Bei started running.

Naturally, all the soldiers following Liu Bei ran down with her.

“Charge following Lord Liu Xuande!”
“We can’t lose to Sister Xuande!”

Of course, Zhang Fei and I also led our troops and ran down towards the enemy.

If they at least pretended to block us as we charge like this, there would be some satisfaction in cutting them down.

But having been beaten too much, they could barely maintain the form of an army and were just acting on their own, not even threatening us by pointing their spears.

“Die! You rebel bastards!”

As I swung the crescent blade widely, rebel soldiers and officers alike started to melt away.

“Aagh, it’s a monster!”

Although I’m Guan Yu, who is called a god of war in later generations, being called a monster makes me feel bad.

Why are they talking like that about a perfectly normal person?

Zhang Fei was massacring enemy soldiers with his long-handled snake-spear, swinging it around as if planing them with a wood planer.

“Only those who want to die should block Lord Zhang Yide’s path!”

With Zhang Fei and me, who are exceptionally powerful, taking the lead, the enemy supply unit collapsed quickly.

The soldiers already turned their backs and ran away just as we approached, and even the officers didn’t know what to do and could only step back.

“Ugh, don’t retreat!”

Shouting like that while stepping back is useless, I tell you.

Would you listen if someone told you to fight to the death while crawling backward?

As we continued to massacre the enemy, my eyes caught sight of someone commanding with a rather fancy sword.

Even though he’s not wearing armor, that guy must be the general commanding this supply unit?

“I, Guan Yunchang, will take the head of the commander!”

I instantly grabbed my crescent blade and ran across the chaotic enemy lines.

And when the enemy general swung his sword to kill me, I easily dodged the attack and cut off his head.

“I, Guan Yunchang, have taken the head of the enemy general!”

With those words, all the enemy soldiers put down their weapons.
