Chapter 26 - Liu Bei Needs Taishi Ci (2)
Guerrilla force, to put it simply, a unit that carries out guerrilla warfare.
The mission we received from Governor Kong Rong of Qing Province is to eliminate in advance the fly-like guys trying to supply Linzi City.
As a bonus, we also get to seize those supplies for ourselves.
“Sister Xuande, aren’t we just going to end up sucking our thumbs at this rate? We haven’t even seen a shadow of the rebels for a week now.”
In movies and dramas, guerrilla forces are portrayed as small units that surprise large enemy armies, achieve victory, and leisurely depart.
However, movies are movies, and reality isn’t so easy.
Guerrilla warfare is like hunting without bait, so if the enemy’s large force doesn’t pass through where we expect, we inevitably end up empty-handed.
Knowing this, the most important thing for a guerrilla force is to wait blankly like an old man fishing until news comes that the enemy is passing by.
We don’t know if they’ll pass by or not, but if we can’t bite when the opportunity comes…
I stopped my thoughts and smacked Zhang Fei’s head.
I didn’t hit him too hard, so it probably didn’t hurt, but Zhang Fei reflexively rubbed his head.
“Why did you hit me?”
“This is what guerrilla warfare is like, Yide. It’s exactly like hunting. The important thing is to ambush near where the prey is likely to pass and pounce in an instant.”
Comparing it to hunting, Zhang Fei seemed to understand roughly.
“And how do you think Lord Xuande is feeling right now?”
Zhang Fei and I turned our gaze towards where Liu Bei was sitting.
On the surface, she was cutely munching on a hollow steamed bun, a soul food of northern China, with a relaxed expression…
But to the eyes of us two, who are very close to Liu Bei, it was clearly visible.
Liu Bei was lowering her left hand to a position invisible to others and tightly gripping the hem of her skirt.
“Usually, sister doesn’t show such signs.”
“Yide, you know too, but no matter how much recognition we seem to have received from the Governors of Yu and Qing Provinces, we’re still just volunteer soldiers.”
Hearing those words, Zhang Fei tilted his head and protested slightly.
“Who doesn’t know that?”
“Being just volunteer soldiers means that if Lord Xuande doesn’t get an official position here, we’ll be in a miserable state with nowhere to go.”
I don’t intend to speak in too much detail since Liu Bei might hear our conversation.
However, if Liu Bei doesn’t get an official position this time, we’ll end up having done nothing but free service while spending tens of millions of won every day.
Zhang Shiping followed us prepared for bankruptcy, but he’ll end up seeing himself go bankrupt without achieving any goals.
If we miss the Yellow Turban Rebellion, which is called an XP-giving event among Three Kingdoms fans, we’ll have to struggle miserably for years without the support of prestigious families like Cao Cao or Yuan Shu.
Not only is struggling for a few years a problem, but if we waste the long initial period of the Three Kingdoms, we’ll end up suffering several times more later.
Zhang Fei might be a bit simple in his thinking, but he’s definitely not ignorant or stupid, so he must have understood everything.
“I’m sorry, brother.”
“I fully understand how you feel. But everyone is waiting patiently, so don’t rush too much.”
As soon as I finished speaking, Liu Bei immediately stood up.
“Yunchang, Yide. I’m going to take Jian Yong and some soldiers to provide relief to the nearby people. You two stay here and contact me if anything happens.”
Liu Bei is really an incredibly tough person.
She must be feeling anxious inside right now, but regardless of those feelings, she’s going to provide relief to gain even a little fame and public support.
Seeing this, Taishi Ci asked Liu Bei.
“Couldn’t you leave such relief efforts to the soldiers?”
Liu Bei shook her head at those words.
Then, with a smile bright enough to potentially enchant the world, she answered.
“I’m just a leader of a volunteer army. Even someone like me, when I show my face at these relief efforts for people suffering from hunger every day, they all seem to appreciate it. I’ve also seen people who have lost their homes and fields to the rebellion feel a little hope.”
What’s truly, truly frightening about Liu Bei is that these words aren’t mere hypocrisy.
Although hidden within each and every word is the intention to lay the groundwork for her future advancement in the Han Dynasty…
Liu Bei is providing relief to the people with genuine goodwill from the depths of her heart, and this moves the hearts of those around her.
It’s not for nothing that she’s called a human capybara, a walking human hypnosis app.
Hearing those words, Taishi Ci unconsciously opened his mouth.
“As expected, you’re on a different level from the many ragtag volunteer soldiers I’ve seen so far.”
She’s capturing another person’s heart.
“Although we can’t help due to our own limited rations, please take 50 soldiers under my command.”
“Thank you, Gongcao.”
Just as Liu Bei returned from providing relief to the people near our camp, Jian Yong, who had led the scouts out, came back.
Judging by his breathless yet smiling face, rather than the dejected, dragging steps…
It seems he’s achieved something big. Can I get my hopes up a little?
As soon as Jian Yong saw Liu Bei and us, he shouted with a loud voice.
“Xuande, Xuande! I, Jian Yong, finally did it. I found the damn enemy supply unit!!! We don’t have to sit around doing nothing anymore!”
Although Liu Bei must have been tired from just finishing the relief efforts, she immediately grabbed both of Jian Yong’s shoulders and asked.
“Where is the enemy supply unit? How many are there? You weren’t followed, were you?”
At those words, Jian Yong smiled brightly, showing his teeth.
“How could I, Jian Yong, possibly be followed by such guys?”
If you’re followed by the enemy while out scouting, the location of your main camp is revealed.
This could lead to the worst-case scenario where we end up being ambushed and annihilated instead…
But since he wasn’t followed, we don’t have to worry about that for now.
“I shook off all the enemies. We discovered them west of Qingsong Mountain here, and they were heading towards Linzi City along the mountain path. The enemy’s size was about 2,000 to 3,000.”
2-3,000, if we ambush them well, we might be able to completely annihilate them?
It was worth the wait, suffering in silence all this time.
As expected, the Yellow Turban Rebellion period is definitely a growth event that gives out experience points.
“Then how far are they from here?”
“Since the enemy has many carts, it’ll probably take them about 4 days to get here. If we go as fast as we can, couldn’t we get there in a day?”
If this were Korea, we could load the supplies and people all at once in cars, but in the Three Kingdoms era without cars, we have to march alongside carts pulled by oxen, which are much slower than people.
Moreover, if the road is rough, the carts can’t even go, so we have to go round and round.
On the other hand, people don’t have such constraints, so we can move much faster than oxen.
“Where would be a good place to ambush?”
Taishi Ci answered that question.
“If we’re going to ambush, it would be good to do it at Qinghe Valley, about a day’s journey from here. Their supply unit must pass through here to enter Linzi City.”
“Qinghe Valley, where is that?”
Taishi Ci took out a map and marked a point.
“It’s around here. Except for the path where people pass, the mountains are steep and densely wooded, making it perfect for hiding. Also, since Lord Jinan has already moved all his troops far away from Qinghe Valley, the enemy probably won’t be on guard against an ambush.”
Moreover, thanks to Liu Bei’s human capybara act, we’ve gained the goodwill of the local residents.
The rebel bastards are hated by the local people.
So the locals have no reason to go and inform the distant supply unit or the enemy in Linzi City about our presence.
They won’t even know there’s an army ready to ambush.
It’s the best situation where the enemy doesn’t know our circumstances, and we can predict how they’ll move.
If we miss this opportunity, we’re not human.
We must reach out and grasp it without fail.
“Lord Xuande, let’s move the army right now to ambush them. If we start preparing as soon as possible, we’ll be able to annihilate them.”
Hearing my words, Liu Bei jumped up from her seat.
“Alright, then let’s go straight to attack the enemy!”
And so we quickly moved to Qinghe Valley, carrying only weapons and minimal rations.
After waiting there for a few days, we saw the heads of some very tempting guys.
“…… They look juicy.”
