Chapter 46: It Feels So Good to Be Home
"The Director is amazing!" the driver applauded, his eyes filled with admiration. "If the Director hadn't driven away the malevolent entity, we probably would have died at its hands."
The deaf and mute man, who had woken up first, was still writing on the car window with his bloody finger...
« I'm going to sue you all. »
He had suffered too much. It was bad enough that they hadn't saved him, but they had also used him as a cushion. Why did life have to be so cruel? Didn't they have any conscience?
Lee Fortune waved his hand modestly. "I only said it was a possibility. I'm not entirely sure. But when I saw the malevolent entity, I had to stand up. Protecting my staff and patients is my responsibility. Even though I'm old, that courageous heart still beats within me."
He then looked at the driver and said, "I'm still just the Vice Director for now, not the Director. The 'Vice' part is still there."
"Yes, Vice Director," the driver said.
Lee Fortune nodded in satisfaction. He was still just the Vice Director, but his staff was already calling him Director. This was a clear sign of popular support.
The four masters from the special department felt that something was off. They didn't need to be so unsure. They were certain that the malevolent entity had not been driven away by the Director before them.
"It was so cute."
"It was also delicious."
Leo and Walter mumbled to themselves.
The four masters didn't know who they were. "Did you see where the malevolent entity went?" one of them asked.
Leo looked at him calmly, a faint smile on his face. Malevolent entity? What's that? He didn't understand, so he just maintained his smile to show that he was friendly. We're not bad people.
"Walter, did you see it?" Leo asked.
"I don't know who he is," Walter said, looking confused.
The two of them looked at each other again and burst into an inexplicable fit of laughter.
The masters from the special department looked at the two of them and had a feeling that there was something wrong with them. Their minds were definitely not normal.
"Let me introduce them to you," Lee Fortune said. "These two are mental patients from the Green Mountain Asylum. They're also my patients. We were on our way to take them back to Green Mountain when we passed through here. You understand, right?"
The four masters looked at each other, a little helpless. They had just been trying to communicate with mental patients. Weren't they just making fools of themselves? No wonder they had found their stares and smiles so creepy. They were mental patients. That explained everything.
Lee Fortune's goal was simple: to return the two patients. He had sworn that he would not let them stay in his hospital. Even if the sky fell, he would hold it up with one hand and steer the wheel with the other to take them back.
The current situation was indeed troublesome, but time was not an issue. When he had left the hospital, the sky had been drizzling. Now, the weather had cleared. It was a beautiful day. It was as if even the heavens were telling him to take them back, and his world would be a sunny one.
The Grand Bridge was a vital transportation route. Once the threat of the malevolent entity was gone, a team arrived to clean up the road. The drivers who had fled returned to find their cars. It was a joke to them. These were their beloved cars, which they normally babied. If someone had damaged them, what would they have done?
It wasn't long before the road was cleared.
The deaf and mute man continued to write his indignant words with his bloody finger.
Lee Fortune comforted him. "Your injuries are a bit complicated. I think you need to go to the hospital for a proper check-up. Stop writing for now and get in the car with me. After I take these two patients back to Green Mountain Asylum, I'll take you to my hospital for a thorough examination."
Although they had encountered some trouble on the bridge, they had picked up a patient to take back to the hospital, which would bring in some extra income. His luck wasn't so bad after all.
Green Mountain Asylum.
Director Hess stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, smoking a cigarette, his eyes fixed on the asylum's main gate.
He had received the news. Lee Fortune was personally bringing the two patients back. He was truly heartless. After all the good publicity they had brought his hospital, he should have had the decency to let them stay for a while as a thank you.
But all that was just wishful thinking. He was really sending them back.
Wee-woo! Wee-woo! Wee-woo!
The familiar sound came from the distance.
Downstairs, Lee Fortune and the driver unloaded the gurneys from the ambulance. They were leaving the two gurneys as a gift, a token of his goodwill.
"Brother Lee, this is a bit much," Director Hess said, looking down at them disapprovingly. "No matter what, our patients brought your hospital a lot of good publicity. You should have at least let them enjoy it for a while. You just took them to your hospital yesterday, and you're already sending them back today. It's too much."
Do you have any medical ethics? Any humanity? Any compassion? You're completely heartless!
Lee Fortune looked at Director Hess, his expression calm. He had begged, he had knelt. He wouldn't do it again. It was useless. The Director Hess before him was more ruthless than anyone.
"Director Hess, my dear colleague, do you know what I went through to bring them back?"
"You probably don't, but I can tell you."
"A malevolent entity! A terrifying one! But not even a malevolent entity could stop me. Look at what happened to the car window! It's shattered! Do you think you can still drive a car like this?"
"You don't need to answer. I'll tell you. You can't. But why did I still bring them back? Because I have a firm resolve. You understand my meaning, right?"
"There's no need to say more. I don't want the repair fees or the medical expenses. And I'm giving you two more gurneys. It's just a small token. Please accept it."
"Goodbye!"
With that, Lee Fortune turned and got into the car without looking back. He stepped on the gas.
Wee-woo! Wee-woo! Wee-woo!
The ambulance disappeared around a corner like the wind, gone in a flash, with no lingering sentiment.
Leo and Walter stretched out their arms, breathing in the fresh air.
"I'm back."
"I'm back too."
They had missed their home while they were at the hospital. Now they were finally back, and their restless hearts were finally calm.
Director Hess looked at the two of them and sighed softly. He waved his hand, and an orderly came to take them back to their room.
Room 666.
Leo and Walter lay on their own beds and took a deep breath.
"This is my smell."
"This is my smell."
Walter took out two bags of soy milk from his cabinet.
"Drink a Sprite."
"Drink a Coke."
They sat on their beds, contentedly drinking their drinks.
"I finally get to drink a Coke."
"I finally get to drink a Sprite."
Walter was in a good mood. Then he noticed a bulge in Leo's crotch. "What's that?" he asked curiously.
Leo looked down at his crotch, then pulled down his pants and took out a small knife. "Oh," he said, puzzled but calm.
"Didn't you give it back? Why is it here? Oh, right. I used it to cut the cute meat. I was afraid of losing it, so I put it here. Do you think they'll come looking for us?"
Walter scratched his head. "I don't know. Maybe we should hide it."
"Good idea."
Leo nodded calmly, pulled down his pants again, and put the small knife back in his crotch. Then he and Walter continued to drink their drinks contentedly. They tasted so good.
