Chapter 45: The Dragon-Subduing Staff Technique
At the docks!
A team of scientific researchers in white lab coats cleaned up the scene. The massive octopus was hoisted by a crane and lowered into a container. Everything was orderly, with no chaos.
The octopus was dead. There was a palm print on its head, and its tentacles were limp, covered in cracks. It was impossible to know what kind of torment it had endured in its final moments. Although its body was intact after death, it was practically falling apart.
Crackle!
"Malevolent entity spotted on the Grand Bridge. A team has been dispatched to suppress it."
A voice came from the walkie-talkie in One-Eye's hand. His mood was now calm, with no fluctuations. The time he had spent in the hospital with the two mental patients was a stain on his life.
He looked at his healed leg, which still ached with a phantom pain. The memory of that brief paralysis was forever etched in his mind.
The octopus had been unlucky. It had crossed paths with the foul-tempered One-Eye and had been brutally beaten before he finally left. Its son, who had been causing trouble on the Grand Bridge while searching for its father, had also met a tragic end. It had been skewered on a grill, seasoned, and cooked to fragrant perfection, smelling so good that even One-Eye himself would have wanted a bite.
A distinguished father-son duo, venturing out into the world, only to have their family line wiped out. A true tragedy.
On the Grand Bridge.
The traffic was at a standstill. The drivers had fled in panic at the sight of the malevolent entity.
In the distance, four masters raced towards the scene. They were agile, like cheetahs, leaping four or five meters at a time as they bounded across the rooftops of the cars.
They had been alerted to the disturbance on the bridge and had rushed over. According to the energy readings, it was a Level 3 malevolent entity, very powerful, and of the same species as the one at the docks.
Seaside City was currently crawling with hidden malevolent entities. Finding them all was a difficult and slow process of elimination. But as soon as an entity released a burst of dark energy, an alarm would sound at headquarters, and they would be dispatched immediately. This was all thanks to the silent contributions of the scientific researchers. Without their advanced technology, they couldn't imagine the chaos that would engulf the city.
This was their home. They would not tolerate malevolent entities running rampant.
Soon, the team of three men and one woman arrived at the location of the energy fluctuations. They were prepared for battle, but the scene before them was puzzling.
The area was indeed in chaos, but there was no sign of the malevolent entity.
"Didn't they say there was a malevolent entity? Where did it go? Did it run away?"
"Everyone, stay alert. The energy fluctuations were right here. It might be hiding somewhere."
"Captain, there are three injured people here."
Three people were lying on the roof of the ambulance. The unluckiest of them was the deaf and mute man. He had cushioned the fall for Vice Director Lee and the driver. He had already been injured by the monster, and now, after taking the impact for two more people, his injuries were even more severe. Fortunately, he was sturdily built and had managed to survive.
The female member of the team, a graduate of the Medical High Institute, rushed to treat the three men on the roof. She placed her hands over them, and a green light emanated from her palms, enveloping them.
Lee Fortune, old but not feeble, let out a soft "chirp" as he was about to wake up. His eyelashes fluttered, and he opened his eyes in a daze.
"Where am I?"
He saw four strangers. From their appearance, he knew who they were: masters from the special department. His hazy mind had only one thought: I'm safe.
Since he was safe, he became very calm, not panicking at all. Waking up and screaming would be a loss of face.
The driver woke up as well.
"Director, I'll protect you!"
His first words upon waking up touched Lee Fortune deeply. Good. Just for that, I will definitely promote you.
"Director, I've kept the watch you gave me safe. Here it is," the driver said, handing the watch to the Director. He then rubbed his chest, which was a little sore and probably bruised.
Lee Fortune took the digital watch and calmly fastened it to his wrist. He looked around, searching for the two patients. Where had they gone? So heartless, he thought. Before I passed out, I specifically told them, "If you have any conscience, carry us away."
It seemed they hadn't. They had run off on their own.
Just then, Lee Fortune looked through the car window and saw two people lying on the gurneys behind the ambulance. Ignoring the four masters, he rushed over.
He found Leo and Walter lying on the gurneys, fast asleep.
He let out a sigh of relief, but also felt a bit helpless.
For crying out loud! How can they sleep through this?
He remembered that before he passed out, the monster had been on a rampage. You didn't run, you just went to sleep? Where did the monster go?
"Wake up!"
Lee Fortune shook the gurneys.
Leo and Walter slowly opened their eyes and sat up. They rubbed their stomachs and mumbled, "We were full, and we wanted to sleep."
Then, for reasons no one could fathom, they looked at each other and broke into bright smiles.
"You're awake."
"Yes, I'm awake."
"Heh heh!"
"Heh heh!"
The simple act of waking up filled them with an inexplicable joy. The world of a mental patient was just that simple and happy.
They got out of the ambulance and stood there quietly, looking around in confusion. This wasn't Green Mountain Asylum. Why hadn't they arrived yet?
The four masters from the special department carefully surveyed the surroundings. They didn't know where the malevolent entity had gone. Had it escaped?
Then they found some clues.
There were cracks in the ground, clear evidence of a violent impact. But they didn't know who had caused them.
"Captain, there's some liquid here. I just tested it. It's the blood of a malevolent entity."
The octopus's blood had splattered on the ground, and there was a faint smell of cooked meat in the air. They were confused. Where was that smell coming from?
Leo and Walter were mental patients with principles. They had returned the things they had borrowed to their original places.
"Do you know where the malevolent entity went?" one of the masters asked.
Vice Director Lee was also completely baffled. He had no idea where it had gone. He had been powerless against it, knocked out with a single blow. Before he passed out, he had seen it rampaging towards them. Logically, if they weren't killed, they should have been eaten.
But now, they had been woken up, still on the roof of the car, while the two patients were sleeping on the gurneys.
This was very interesting.
Lee Fortune was about to tell the truth when the driver beside him spoke up first.
"I think the Director must have driven it away," the driver said, looking at Lee Fortune. "Earlier, when we saw the octopus coming towards us, the Director bravely stood up and fought it with this very iron rod."
"Although I didn't see it clearly, when the Director was knocked back by the monster, he must have unleashed some kind of terrifying move that seriously injured it, causing it to retreat."
The driver had discovered the benefits of ass-kissing. Besides, if it wasn't the Director, who else could it have been? The two mental patients? Don't be ridiculous. Do you think I'm an idiot?
Lee Fortune looked at the driver in surprise. The meaning in his eyes was clear: Although what you're saying makes me happy, aren't you laying it on a bit thick?
"Is that really what happened?" the master from the special department asked doubtfully. They couldn't see anything special about the Director before them. He didn't look like a master.
Lee Fortune pondered for a moment, then said slowly, "Although I'm not entirely sure, at the moment I was knocked back by the monster, I did indeed execute a move from the Dragon-Subduing Staff Technique."
"It's possible that the monster was indeed injured by me," he continued. "I'm only saying it's possible, but I'm still somewhat confident."
"After all, I was an unsuccessful candidate of the Buddhist Temple High Institute, an outstanding soldier for three years in the military, and one of the Ten Outstanding Youths of Seaside City."
