Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Battle Festival Debut & Bean’s Referee Pranks
"Alright, EeTvee fam, get hype!" Joseph beamed into the camera, Rotom circling for a dramatic swoop. "Your boy got invited to the Viridia City Battle Festival! It's my first time entering an open-air battle tourney — and yes, we're streaming the whole thing."
Behind him, Tyrunt chomped down on a training dummy for the tenth time that morning. Bits of straw flew everywhere. Riolu was stretching, his aura flickering like a gentle flame around his paws. Bean… was nowhere to be seen, which was concerning.
Chat: "BEAN IS PLOTTING." "TYRUNT'S READY TO RUMBLE." "Riolu about to 1v5."
The festival arena was like a mini outdoor coliseum — wooden stage, colorful streamers, a big LED screen that rotated through match brackets. Rotom's live feed was already blasting Joseph's smiling face to viewers all over EeTvee.
Tyrunt stomped onto the stage, head held high like a prehistoric king. Riolu followed, calm and focused, the only one not showing off.
Bean? He'd found a shady spot under the referee's stand and was chewing suspiciously on something that looked like confetti.
"Please, Bean. Don't prank the ref," Joseph pleaded, under his breath.
Chat: "No promises 😂" "Ref about to get Bean'd." "Why is Tyrunt posing like a pro wrestler?"
Joseph's first opponent was a bubbly local teen named Mira, who wore a pink baseball cap covered in shiny pins. She sent out her Pokémon: a feisty Buizel and a Dedenne.
"Nice to meet you, Joseph! Good luck!" she called out.
"You too!" Joseph called back. He turned to Tyrunt and Riolu. "Alright, squad, let's keep it cool. No eating the competition, okay Tyrunt?"
Tyrunt snorted, then flexed his tiny arms. The audience laughed. Mira giggled. Even Dedenne tilted its head in confusion.
The ref raised his flag. "Battle, begin!"
Mira shouted, "Buizel, Aqua Jet!"
Buizel zipped forward in a blur of water, heading straight for Tyrunt. But Tyrunt — having actually paid attention for once — planted his feet and used Dragon Tail with perfect timing, swatting Buizel aside like a squeaky toy. Buizel rolled, dazed but okay.
Riolu sprang forward next, countering Dedenne's Nuzzle with a clean Quick Attack. Dedenne tried to shock him, but Riolu dodged with elegant little hops, flicking its tail every time. The crowd cheered at Riolu's nimble footwork.
Joseph pumped a fist in the air. "Let's go, squad! Show 'em that EeTvee spirit!"
While the battle raged, Bean decided it was the perfect moment to test his new hobby: stealth sabotage. He scurried under the ref's stand, climbed up behind the poor official's leg, and — thwap! — slapped a leaf sticker right on the referee's back.
The ref didn't notice. The crowd roared with laughter when Rotom zoomed in for a close-up. The sticker said: "PROPERTY OF BEAN."
Chat: "😭😭😭 THE HAT LORD CLAIMS HIS DOMAIN." "Ref just got Bean'd." "This stream is the best."
Mira burst out laughing mid-command. Even the ref spun around in circles, trying to find the culprit.
Joseph spotted Bean perched behind the ref's hat. "Bean! Get back here! No marking referees!"
Bean squeaked, flipped his hat dramatically, and vanished into the stage props.
Back in the ring, Tyrunt wasn't content with just Dragon Tails. He decided to show off his new Crunch, lunging at Buizel with a ferocious snap. The crowd gasped — but Buizel tapped out just before the chomp landed. Smart move.
Riolu, ever the balanced one, ended the match by faking left then striking Dedenne with a soft Force Palm, just enough to knock it back safely. Mira raised her Poké Ball in surrender.
"Okay, okay! You got us!" Mira laughed, recalling her Pokémon. "Your team's adorable and scary!"
After the match, Joseph wiped sweat from his forehead and motioned for Rotom to switch to interview mode. Tyrunt sat proudly, teeth gleaming. Riolu leaned against his leg, calm as ever. Bean popped out from behind the ref's podium, waving a tiny flag he'd stolen from the score table.
"Big shoutout to Mira — amazing first opponent!" Joseph told the camera. "And big shoutout to Tyrunt for not actually eating Buizel. Or the scoreboard. Or the ref."
Chat: "TYRUNT MVP." "Bean's sticker game is unstoppable." "Riolu = actual hero."
The festival's host, a goofy announcer with a megaphone, ran up. "Joseph, your stream blew up! People loved Bean's 'Property Of' sticker! Any plans for more festival streams?"
Joseph laughed. "Absolutely — we're gonna do more open battles. And next time, maybe we'll get Bean his own referee badge."
Bean squeaked triumphantly and slapped another sticker on the host's megaphone. This one read: "BEAN APPROVED."
As the festival wound down for the day, Joseph sat cross-legged with Tyrunt's head in his lap, Riolu meditating beside him, and Bean using Tyrunt's tail as a bouncy seat.
"Thanks for cheering us on, EeTvee fam. Remember: stream your dreams, prank your refs — wait, don't actually do that — and we'll see you at the next battle fest!"
Rotom signed off with a sparkling "STREAM ENDING" graphic shaped like Tyrunt's jaw crunching the text. The audience loved every second.
"TYRUNT = BATTLE KING." "Bean 4 President." "More battles plz!"
