Chapter 90: Chapter 90: The Rain Falls So Earnestly

Some of the bar's patrons couldn't help but laugh when they heard Kaito mention it would be raining for the next few days.

"What a joke. Foosha Village hardly sees rain all year. How could he be so sure it's going to rain?"

"Exactly. He says it'll rain and expects us to believe it? Who does he think he is?"

"Kids these days love to talk big!"

Makino listened to their chatter, growing more and more uncomfortable. In her eyes, Kaito was a young man with both talent and restraint, someone who would personally take care of Luffy and Ace. Her impression of him couldn't be higher.

So for once, the always gentle Makino got angry. She shouted to the bar patrons:

"He's not talking big! He's Vice Admiral Uchiha Kaito of the Marines!"

With that, Makino turned and headed to the back room. A moment later, she came out holding an umbrella and placed it next to the counter—an open show of trust in Kaito.

The patrons looked at each other, stunned. It was the first time any of them had seen Makino lose her temper. From her words, they also learned the identity of the young man from earlier.

The youngest Vice Admiral in the Marines—Uchiha Kaito. Rumor had it his most terrifying trait was his bizarre abilities, capable of performing countless impossible feats, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Thinking back, the patrons who had laughed at Kaito quickly downed their drinks and hurried to the counter to settle their tabs. A few even offered apologies on the way out.

When they got home, they all, without exception, told their families the same thing:

"It's going to rain in the next few days. Don't forget your umbrella if you go out!"

...

After returning to his warship, Kaito took a day to rest. Once recovered, he took a moment to report the results of his mission to Garp.

"Vice Admiral Garp, I did everything I could as you asked. I couldn't get Luffy to change, but Ace... he won't be becoming a pirate anymore."

"Really, Kaito!? That's already way beyond what I hoped for! I owe you big time, that's an amazing result!"

"Heh, glad to hear that."

"Kaito, you've done me a huge favor!"

Garp's voice over the Den Den Mushi was full of excitement. He knew better than anyone how stubborn his grandson could be. Once Luffy set his mind on something, getting him to give it up was practically impossible.

Sending Kaito to educate Luffy was a long shot—he'd figured it wouldn't work but thought it was worth a try anyway.

As for Ace, Garp hadn't even planned on Kaito intervening. He hadn't mentioned Ace at all from the beginning.

So the fact that Kaito had actually convinced Ace was a complete surprise—an unexpected joy.

Of course, if he knew Ace had abandoned piracy only to join the Revolutionary Army instead, one wonders how he'd react. Would he slap an Armament Haki imprint of his sandal across Ace's face?

After hanging up, Kaito summoned Ain and Kalifa and gave a quick order:

"Let the soldiers on deck duty today know to bring their rain gear."

Kalifa didn't ask why. She simply turned and left the office to relay the message.

Ain, on the other hand, asked curiously:

"Kaito, since when are you a navigator? Are you unhappy with our current one because of what happened last time? If that's it, I can learn to do it—you've got more important things to worry about."

Kaito chuckled, stood up, and pulled Ain along onto the deck.

Under her puzzled gaze, Kaito formed a few hand seals and murmured:

"Rain Tiger at Will."

As soon as he spoke, the sky abruptly darkened. Ain looked up in shock.

The once-clear sky was now completely covered with thick clouds, and within moments, a steady drizzle began to fall.

With Kaito's current chakra reserves, casting Rain Tiger at Will could cover nearly the entire East Blue. In this sea where Golden Lion Shiki's power stood out above all, Kaito only needed a few moments of sensory focus with his eyes closed to pinpoint Shiki's location.

Ain extended her hand to catch the falling rain, and her mind wandered back to the Weevil incident. She'd been gravely injured then, and just like now, the sky had suddenly turned from sunny to stormy. Rain had started to fall from nowhere.

She remembered how her roommate Alice had even cursed at the weather back then.

Now she looked at Kaito again. That rain had barely started when Kaito showed up on that lifeboat and saved her from the brink of death. It must have been one of his abilities. Truly dependable.

Having locked onto Golden Lion Shiki's position, Kaito opened his eyes and looked toward a certain direction.

"Found you, Shiki."

With that, Kaito formed another hand seal to cancel the Rain Tiger at Will technique.

But suddenly, Ain grasped his unsealed hand. Kaito paused, turning his head to her in confusion.

Ain smiled sweetly and held his hand.

"I like the rain. Can we let it keep falling for a while longer, Kaito?"

Her voice was impossibly soft, leaving Kaito momentarily dazed. Something about the way she looked at him felt... different. Was there something wrong with this rain?

Still, if Ain liked it, he figured they could let it keep raining a while longer. He'd just increase the standing soldiers' allowances for the week. After all, he'd just looted a decent fortune from that island.

Seeing Kaito actually grant her this little, selfish request, Ain's heart was even more moved. She couldn't help but stand on her toes and plant a kiss on his cheek.

Before Kaito could react, she turned away, running to the other side of the deck to enjoy the rainy view.

Kaito touched the spot on his face where Ain had "ambushed" him, still unable to make sense of what had just happened. After thinking for a while, all he could do was sigh.

"Women really are complicated creatures…"

...

Somewhere in the East Blue, above a certain sea zone, an island was cloaked in storm clouds.

"Damn it, it was just sunny a minute ago! How the hell did it start raining all of a sudden?!"

Golden Lion Shiki stared out at the rain-drenched window, took a deep swig of liquor, and grumbled in irritation.

A lackey standing nearby chimed in quickly:

"Yeah, Captain, the weather out at sea is always this unpredictable!"

Shiki's face darkened. The drink in his cup floated into the air and formed the shape of a small lion's head—one that turned to face the lackey who'd just spoken.

"What did you just say about the sea's weather?"

"Un... unpredictable?"

Thud! The lackey's eyes widened in disbelief. He looked down at his chest to see a hole the size of a fist punched clean through it—he could even see the scenery behind him through it.

Coughing up mouthfuls of blood, the lackey collapsed, dead. The surrounding pirates recoiled in fear, trembling where they stood.

"Hmph. You think I need a worthless grunt like you to tell me that?"

Shiki looked down indifferently at the corpse, but in his mind, he was back in that battle more than twenty years ago against the Roger Pirates.

He'd been on the brink of victory—until a sudden, violent storm turned the tides. Half of his Flying Pirate Fleet was destroyed, and he ended up with a ship's rudder lodged in his skull. His full strength had been shackled ever since.

Damn that rain. Damn the weather.

Looks like it's time to find a proper navigator.
