Chapter 7: Go To Bed
[Situation 1]
[Subject 1]
At the start of the game, Harry finds himself in a brightly lit bedroom.
[Go to bed] appears on the screen, seemingly instructing Harry to go to sleep immediately.
"Peter, just go to bed? That's it?" Harry asks me, confused.
"No, you have to leave the room first."
"Then at least give some guidance! Why put 'Go to bed' first if it's going to confuse people?"
"Alright, my bad. It's our first game, after all."
Harry looks around the room, spots the door, and walks toward it.
[Press E to open]
The door swings open, revealing more of the house.
Well, he made all the 3D models, but he doesn't know what Peter's going to do with them
"Now what?"
"Just explore the house. You'll figure out how to play."
So, Harry looks around the house and heads to the front door, where a prompt appears:
[Press E to lock]
"…?"
Harry presses E, and a lock appears on the door.
"…Is this an anti-burglary game?"
"Pfft."
Harry continues wandering and notices an open window, so he closes it.
"So… that's it, right? I don't know what else to find or press."
"If you think it's safe enough, then go to bed."
"What's that supposed to mean? Is there going to be a jumpscare or something?"
"Spoiling it would ruin the fun, dude."
Harry returns to the bedroom, closes the door, and looks at his bed.
[Press E to Go to bed]
He gets into bed, and the room's lights go out, leaving it quite dark.
After a moment, a prompt appears:
[Did you lock the front door?]
[Yes] [No]
"…"
Harry presses Yes.
Suddenly, the sound of a door handle turning and knocking echoes.
"…Okay, this game is making me pretty anxious," Harry says.
Then, another question appears:
[Did you closed the window?]
[Yes] [No]
Harry presses Yes again.
The sound of knocking on the window starts, sounding eerily close, making Harry sweat a bit.
"Peter? Where'd you get those sound effects?"
"Why ask? Keep playing!"
"Uhh…"
The game presents another question, this one making Harry sweat even more:
[Did you arm the home security system?]
[Yes] [No]
"…Uh oh."
"Harry… next time, check the house more carefully."
"…Alright, alright… So, does it matter if I pick Yes or No here?"
"Who knows? Try Yes. Maybe it'll be fine?"
"Peter…"
Nervously, Harry hesitates to press No but ultimately chooses Yes.
…
CRASH!!
The sound of a window shattering loudly fills the air, spiking Harry's anxiety.
Then, footsteps slowly approach the bedroom door.
The door creaks open, revealing pitch-black darkness outside, where almost nothing is visible.
"…Peter? Is there a jumpscare?"
"Yup."
"I hate you."
Suddenly, the screen glitches wildly, and a shadowy figure holding a knife charges at high speed, making Harry's face go pale.
The screen distorts completely, and a message appears:
[Situation Failed
Someone Got In]
[Retry?]
"…So? How's the jumpscare?" I ask, holding back laughter and nudging Harry with my elbow.
"My heart's racing like crazy…"
After calming down, Harry offers a single compliment:
"I don't play many horror games, but yours is… unique. Unlike typical horror games with random face-grabbing scares for no reason, yours punishes players for making mistakes. Honestly, from the moment the game mentioned home security, I was already terrified."
"And your jumpscare… it feels real. Not because of hyper-realistic models or anything, but because the situation feels so lifelike."
Wow, that's probably not just a compliment…
"Wanna try again? It's a short game."
"Yeah, definitely."
And so, Harry starts the game from the beginning.
It's the same room again. Harry hurriedly leaves the room and checks everything.
This time, he activates the Home Security system and finds a few other things to press E on.
Finally, Harry returns to the bedroom and gets into bed.
[Did you lock the front door?]
[Yes]
Knock knock…
[Did you close the window?]
[Yes]
Knock knock…
[Did you arm the home security system?]
[Yes]
The sound of a window shattering echoes, but this time, an alarm blares.
[Did you hide the knives?]
[Yes]
Immediately after, the sound of police sirens rings out.
Gradually, the sirens fade away.
[Well done!
No one will get in!]
[End demo]
"Wow… the game's pretty short," Harry says.
"What do you expect? Three and a half hours isn't nearly enough time to make a complete game," I reply.
"So, you're gonna finish it right here and now?"
"Nah, I'll head home and work on it tomorrow."
"Got it. Be careful on your way home, then."
"Thanks! I'll finish the whole game tomorrow!"
The two smile and fist-bump. Peter heads out, leaving Harry alone.
"…"
His dad's still at work, and it's starting to get dark outside.
"…"
Alright, Harry feels uneasy—normally, being alone doesn't bother him like this.
"…Damn it, why am I so anxious?!"
Harry scans the living room, checking everything.
Door locked? Check.
Windows locked? Check.
Home Security activated? Check.
Knives? Check.
Gun? Definitely.
Goblin mask? What's this? Better hide it in my room—don't want some intruder using it to bash my head in.
After a while, Harry feels the villa is secure enough.
Alright, time to turn off the lights and head to his room.
Harry flips the switch, plunging the room into darkness.
"…"
Come on, Harry, it's just a game you and Peter worked on. Why be scared? A game has nothing to do with real life.
…Well, maybe it does, since this game is based on real life, but—
Click.
"…?"
Harry glances toward the kitchen, cautiously approaching with maximum alertness.
He flicks on the light.
The kitchen is empty.
"…"
Harry turns off the light, heads to his room, and locks the door.
He sits on his bed, eyes fixed on the door, filled with unease.
"There's no one out there, right? Probably no one."
Despite saying that, Harry keeps staring at the door.
…It seems Go to Bed has affected Harry more than he realized.
