Chapter 6: Coding

Knock knock

"Come in, come in!"

Harry opened the door and immediately saw Peter.

"Oh, it's you—oh my god! Why are your clothes so dirty and why is there blood on your shoulder??"

"Nah, don't worry, just ran into some crazy superhero fan. Luckily, they've been caught."

"Well then... come inside, I'll grab some first aid stuff."

So I went into Harry's house. Harry got some antiseptic spray, bandages, and a few other things.

"You... don't need to use all that stuff."

"Peter, wounds can get infected if not treated properly. You should know that, right?"

"Yeah..."

[Harry should just die.]

"Huh?! Why are you saying my friend should die?!"

[He's annoying! He acts like he's your boyfriend or something! Gross! You only need me to care about you!]

...Is the Outer God homophobic or what?

"By the way, I haven't asked you yet—what happened that landed you in the hospital?" Harry asked, looking a bit worried.

Oh, right, I don't have a phone except for that old landline, so he couldn't get in touch with me.

"Just some idiot who hit me on the head with a hammer."

"WHAT?!" Harry stood up, his face full of shock.

[WTF?? WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME?]

"But lucky for me, his hammer was cheap, so when he hit me, it flew back and hit him in the head, and he fell into a sewer."

"..." Harry stared at me for a long time.

"You don't believe me, do you?"

"I want to believe you... but I'm not an idiot."

"If you don't believe me, just say it."

Harry looked at me suspiciously for a moment before sighing.

"If you're hiding something for a reason... well, I won't press you. But why did you come to my place?"

"Oh... can I borrow your computer?"

"...For what?"

"To make a game."

***

"Hey, hey... Seriously? You're really going to make a game?" Harry frowned, watching me view a tutorial video on coding a game.

"Yup."

"...But didn't you prefer mechanical engineering or something? Why the sudden interest in making a game?"

"Well... I just thought I'd like making games more."

"You're a terrible liar, you know that, right?"

'As if I'm going to tell him that a purely evil Outer God wants to cause chaos across the world, so I have to stop it by making a horror game,' I thought, continuing to watch the tutorial video.

"But what made you want to make a game? Hasn't anyone told you how insanely hard it is?"

"Oh, I've heard."

"And you know that making a game usually requires a studio with a big team, each person with their own role, and a company to publish and promote the game, right?"

"You seem to know a lot about it."

"My dad looked into the industry, but he never took it seriously because the money you make is pretty low compared to the effort it takes."

"Thanks for the info, but I'm not planning to start a studio or anything."

Harry raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

"Harry, have you ever heard the term... indie game?"

Indie game?

"...Like, a game made independently, not by a company?"

"Exactly. I'm not making a game primarily to make money (lie number one), and I'm doing this out of a passionate love for games (lie number two). Got it?"

"..." [...] Both Harry and Nyarlathotep froze, staring at me.

"...Peter, what's wrong with you today?"

"Just don't ask, I need to keep watching this tutorial."

So I went back to watching the video, leaving Harry questioning his entire existence after hearing me say things I'd never normally say.

[Peter, are you sure making a game will create fear and chaos? I'm doubting that.]

'Oh, my friend, just have you tweet something about men, and there'll always be someone angrily saying all men should die. That shows how easy it is to stir up chaos.'

[Then why not do that? Even if it's just a little chaos, I'd still enjoy it, no?]

'Because it wouldn't last long. Everyone knows Twitter—or X now—is full of idiots, so no one bothers responding to them. That means you wouldn't get to enjoy it, right?'

[Wow, that makes sense. But why does it have to be a game?]

'Because games aren't just for entertainment—they're also an amazing storytelling tool if done right. And from what I can tell, the chaos you want always involves negativity. If I do this well, you'll get the purest form of chaos!'

[...I think you're misunderstanding what I mean by chaos. What I want is humans hating and killing each other—]

'Whatever, dude.'

The Outer God got pissed and started cursing me out, but I ignored it and kept watching the tutorial video.

A few minutes later, I finally got the hang of it and started coding, as well as downloading a few things, including... Unity.

Unity... How should I put it? This game development tool is pretty good, but after all the drama from its controversies, it's hard to fully trust it.

Oh well, I'll just make the game and figure it out later.

I'm planning to make a 3D game with super simplistic graphics—if not outright ugly.

But does graphics quality matter more than the game's overall quality?

...Actually, it kinda does, but I'll deal with that later. (Again?)

"Alright! Let's do this!"

"Are you sure you can pull this off?" Harry asked me.

"Nahhh, don't worry, it's just a short game. What could possibly go wrong—"

30 minutes later...

I slumped in my chair, staring at the mess of code I'd written.

"...You sure you can do this?" Harry asked, placing a glass of water on the table.

"I'm not giving up...!" I rallied, chugging the water.

Harry leaned over to look at the code I'd written, then glanced at me.

"Did you copy this code from somewhere, or did you write it yourself?"

"Huh? Oh, I wrote it myself. I still remember the tutorial video."

"...Seriously?"

Wow... a genius, huh? No wonder my dad thinks so highly of Peter.

But dude, you can copy someone code in the internet, it's free and no one will judge you, you know?

"I think you messed up something here," Harry said.

"Huh?! Where??"

Harry pointed at a section of code that looked like an absolute disaster.

"Oh no... This code looks like something straight out of YandereDev shitty code!!"

"Then fix it, or the game's gonna lag like crazy."

"Ugh..."

Harry watched as Peter struggled, typing each line without giving up, even though it was his first time coding for a game.

Hmm... Why don't I help him out? He looks kinda pitiful doing this alone.

"Need any help?" Harry asked, walking over.

"Huh? Can you actually help?"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Whoops, my bad, didn't mean it like that."

Peter glanced at the stuff he hadn't tackled yet.

"Harry, can you make 3D models? Are you up for it?"

"3D models? Hmm... I think I can manage, but I don't have much experience."

"Oh, thank you, Harry!"

And so, Harry grabbed his laptop and started helping Peter.

Three hours later...

Harry could hardly believe his eyes.

Making a game is insanely tough and time-consuming—taking four or five months is already considered fast.

But to finish one in just three and a half hours? Even for an indie game, that's unbelievable.

"Phew... I'm exhausted. Harry, try playing it to see if there are any bugs," Peter said, stretching as he spoke.

"Uh... sure."

Looking at the game he and Peter had created, Harry launched it.

"Oh, Peter, have you named the game yet?"

"The name? Oh, I forgot."

Peter thought for a moment before looking at the game.

"Its name will be GO TO BED!"
