"They are innocent. Release them," Shen Yuan commanded.

Babanuki hesitated. The pressure of obeying Orochi clashed with the terror Shen Yuan evoked.

"I… Orochi-sama—"

"I've already killed Kurozumi Orochi myself. Do you understand?"

With a hiss, Shen Yuan unsheathed the Heaven-Swallowing Sword. Black mist seeped into the air, dense and suffocating.

Cold sweat drenched Babanuki's brow.

"…Understood! I'll release them right away!"

He fumbled with the keys and unshackled both Kawamatsu and Hyogoro.

"I will never forget this kindness," Kawamatsu vowed before vanishing in a blur.

Hyogoro's apprentice bowed.

The boy's face froze in confusion, opening his mouth to reply.

A shadowy blade sliced through the air.

Blood sprayed.

The boy dropped to one knee, his eyes wide with betrayal.
