Shining Shadow

Chapter 61: 61: Crimson Lake Chaos and Narrow Pass Perils

I lounged by the crimson glow of the lake, its surface shimmering like a ruby under the midday sun, the color bleeding from crystal deposits buried deep in its bed. My Zorath snorted nearby, its scaled hide glinting as it grazed on tough steppe grass. The air carried a faint tang of minerals, mixing with the smoky aroma of roasting Gromble meat skewered over our crackling campfire. Varkoth, my five-meter-long Beginner Master Darkness Basilisk Emperor, had snagged the beast earlier, his Dread Glare paralyzing it before a single snap of his jaws ended its thrashing. Now, the fire popped and hissed, the meat dripping fat that sizzled in the flames.

On my shoulder perched my new Silver Queen Mantis, its crystalline exoskeleton catching the light like a tiny prism. I'd been tossing names around for hours while we rode, each one more absurd than the last—Crystal Claw, Glimmer Reaper, Shiny McStabby. The girls, Tira, Bera, and Lila, rode ahead, their Zoraths kicking up dust, their glares sharp enough to cut through my Starforged Tunic. They were still sore about my antics in Tradewind, especially that bandit interrogation back in the Ironspike Mountains. Couldn't blame them, but their fury only fueled my grin.

"Oi, little queen," I murmured to the mantis, scratching its tiny head with a finger. "How about… Slicey Sparkle?" It clicked its mandibles, unimpressed.

I chuckled, leaning back against a rock, my curse's 30 kg weight tugging at my limbs but dulled by the tunic's Star Qi. The girls were off sparring with Varkoth, a little game I'd egged on. "Show 'em who's boss, Vark," I'd told him, knowing his royal bloodline made him untouchable, even against Tira's Middle Grand Master Fire, Bera's Peak Master Fire, and Lila's Peak Master Earth. His hisses carried across the lake, taunting them with that silky voice of his. "Females, your flames flicker weakly against my shadow."

Tira's Fire Qi flared, a phoenix of heat bursting from her tattooed arm. "Keep talking, snake, and I'll roast you!" A fireball scorched the air, grazing Varkoth's scales. He slithered aside, his Shadow Bind coiling darkness around her legs, tripping her into the dirt. Bera laughed, lobbing her own fireballs, while Lila summoned earth spikes that erupted in jagged arcs, only for Varkoth to vanish in a blur of Shadowstep. The girls were outclassed, and it was driving them mad. Perfect.

I turned back to my mantis, smirking. "You know what? Let's really stir the pot. Your name's Bertili—Bera, Tira, Lila, all in one." The mantis tilted its head, mandibles twitching as if approving the chaos. I laughed, digging into my spatial ring for the special feed I'd bought in Tradewind. "Time to eat, Bertili. You too, Stinky." I tossed a handful to the Silver Queen Mantis and called Stinky out from his beast ring. My Middle Knight Earth beetle scuttled forward, his emerald carapace gleaming. I dumped a pile of feed in front of him, and they both chomped eagerly.

As they ate, a faint glow pulsed from Bertili's crystal shell, her Qi surging. Her mandibles vibrated, and a crackle of energy snapped through the air—she'd hit Middle Novice Crystal. Not bad for a beginner. Stinky wasn't far behind; his carapace hardened, edges sharpening as his Earth Qi thickened. Peak Knight Earth, a breakthrough that made my chest swell with pride. "Look at you two, my royal bug army's shaping up," I said, patting Stinky's shell and tickling Bertili's antennae. They chirped and clicked, and I swear they leaned into my touch like loyal pups.

Across the lake, Varkoth's sparring hit a crescendo. Tira's Fire Qi roared, a blazing whip cracking toward him, but he countered with a Dread Glare, freezing her mid-strike. Bera and Lila tried a combo—Bera's fireballs fueling Lila's earth spikes into molten spears—but Varkoth's scales shimmered, absorbing the heat, and he broke through to Middle Master Darkness. He hissed triumphantly, slithering back to me, his coils settling by the fire. "Father, the females burn bright but fall short," he said, voice smooth as silk.

"Good work, Vark," I said, tossing him a chunk of raw Gromble. The girls trudged over, sweat-soaked and fuming, their tunics clinging in ways that made my blood hum. Tira's phoenix tattoo gleamed, Bera's corset strained, and Lila's rune-etched skirt hugged her hips. I kept my grin in check, knowing one wrong word would spark a war.

We sat to eat, the Gromble's smoky flavor bursting on my tongue. I tore off a piece, tossing bits to Bertili and Stinky, who clicked happily. "My bug empire's gonna rule Adena," I said, half to them, half to the girls. "Picture it—Stinky leading the charge, Bertili slicing through ranks, Varkoth raining shadow terror. Unstoppable."

Tira snorted, licking grease from her fingers. "You're delusional, Killy. Talking to bugs like they're your kids."

Bera smirked, biting into her meat. "He's lost it. Petting them, naming them—Bertili? Really?"

Lila's earth Qi flickered, her eyes narrowing. "You're spending more time with those bugs than us. It's creepy."

I leaned back, winking. "Jealous, ladies? Plenty of me to go around." Their glares could've melted steel, but I caught the flush in their cheeks—jealousy, plain as day, and not just of my charm. They were envious of my bugs. I laughed, stroking Bertili's shell. "Don't worry, girls. You're still my favorite chaos catalysts."

They rolled their eyes, but the silence that followed felt… lighter. Like they were glad for the break from my usual groping and quips. I let them have it, focusing on my bugs, whispering plans for a beetle-mantis legion that'd make Forgehold's lords quiver. The girls ate quietly, stealing glances, their frustration mingling with something softer. Maybe they were starting to see the method in my madness.

After the meal, we packed up, doused the fire, and mounted our Zoraths, Bertili perched on my shoulder, Stinky back in his ring. The crimson lake faded behind us as we rode into a narrow pass between two jagged mountains, their peaks clawing at the sky. The air grew heavy, dust swirling as the path tightened, forcing us single-file. Varkoth slithered beside me, his scales blending with the shadows. Tira led, her Fire Qi a faint glow, while Bera and Lila flanked me, their Zoraths snorting at the rocky terrain.

We'd barely gone a mile when the air crackled with Qi—five cultivators dropped from the cliffs, their auras pulsing Master and Grand Master levels. A Fire Master, his axe wreathed in flames; a Water Master, her whip rippling with liquid force; an Earth Grand Master, his hammer glowing with stone Qi; a Wind Master, twin daggers spinning; and a Sky Grand Master, a lithe woman with azure hair, her bow crackling with ethereal bolts. Ambush.

"Mercenaries," Tira growled, her Fire Qi flaring. "Killy, plan?"

I grinned, unsheathing Pyroclast Dual Swords, Ember's Fang and Blaze's Claw humming with Fire Qi. "Ladies, let's dance. Tira, lead the firestorm. Bera, amplify her. Lila, lock 'em down. Varkoth, shadow their asses. I'll carve the gaps."

Tira nodded, her phoenix tattoo blazing as she unleashed Blaze Tempest, a whirlwind of fire that forced the mercenaries to scatter. The Fire Master charged her, his axe swinging, but Bera's Inferno's Wrath—learned from her new book—sent a molten wave crashing into him, his screams muffled as his armor sizzled. Lila stomped, her Earth's Grasp summoning stone tendrils that snared the Water Master's legs, pinning her. The whip lashed out, but Tira's Flame Shield absorbed it, turning water to steam.

I darted in, agility boots blurring, and used Whirlwind Strike from Storm Technique. My swords spun, slicing the Wind Master's daggers from his hands. Varkoth's Shadow Bind coiled around him, dragging him to the ground, where Lila's Stone Barrage pummeled him into submission. The Earth Grand Master roared, his hammer smashing toward me, but I Shadowstepped behind him, my Shadowveil Cloak cloaking me in darkness. I drove Heaven Splitter into his back, cracking his armor, and Bera's fireball finished him, the explosion rocking the pass.

The Sky Grand Master loosed a barrage of azure bolts, but Tira and Bera synced their Fire Qi, their Dual Inferno forming a blazing wall that burned the bolts to ash. Lila's Earth Spire shot up, knocking the bow from her hands, and Varkoth's Dread Glare froze her in place. I leaped, Wind's Rebuke slashing her arm, forcing her to her knees. The girls' synergy was flawless—Tira's commanding flames, Bera's explosive wrath, Lila's unyielding earth, and Varkoth's shadowy menace, all orchestrated by my chaos. In minutes, four mercenaries lay dead, their bodies looted for two spatial rings containing 30 Level 4 Spirit Stones, 20 Level 3 Spirit Stones, a Sky-infused bow, and a Water Qi whip.

The Sky Grand Master, bloodied but alive, glared as we bound her to a gnarled tree. I stepped forward, smirking. "Alright, darling, spill. Who sent you?"

Tira's Fire Qi flared. "Killy, no games!" Before I could reply, Bera and Lila grabbed me, their Qi-enhanced strength pinning my arms. They tied me to another tree, a rag stuffed in my mouth. I muffled a laugh, eyes twinkling as Tira interrogated the mercenary.

"Talk," Tira snapped, a fireball hovering near the woman's face.

The Sky cultivator spat blood. "Lord Gumisa's son, Valthor. He's pissed you outbid him for that mantis at the Starveil Auction. Wants your Shadowveil Cloak and the Silver Queen Mantis. Said you humiliated him in front of Tradewind's elite."

Bera's eyes narrowed. "Valthor's a spoiled brat. What else?"

"He's got spies watching you," the woman said. "Knows you're headed to Forgehold. More mercenaries are waiting—his father's coin runs deep."

Lila's earth Qi rumbled. "Anything else?"

"That's all," the woman said, slumping. "Kill me or let me go, but Valthor won't stop."

The girls exchanged glances, debating. I worked the rag loose, spitting it out. "Oi, ladies, untie me. We've got her secrets."

Tira glared but nodded, and they freed me. As they turned to discuss the mercenary's fate, I moved like lightning, drawing Wind's Rebuke and slicing through her neck in one clean stroke. Her head rolled, blood soaking the dirt. The girls froze, eyes wide with shock.

"Killy, what the hell?!" Tira shouted, her Fire Qi spiking.

I sheathed my sword, shrugging. "She's a loose end. Let her go, she runs to Valthor. He sends more goons—stronger ones. We cut the problem at the root."

Bera's fists clenched. "You didn't even let us decide!"

Lila's voice was low. "That was cold, Killy."

I met their gazes, unflinching. "Cold but necessary. Forgehold's close, and we're not slowing down for stragglers. You know I'm right."

They didn't argue, but their silence was heavy. Varkoth hissed softly. "Father's blade cuts true." I shot him a grin, but the girls' glares lingered as we looted her gear—a Sky Qi amulet and 10 Level 2 Spirit Stones—before moving on.

The pass grew darker, storm clouds brewing overhead. We faced more threats—Scholar-level Shadowfoxes and Master-level Ironfang Boars. The foxes' speed was a problem until Lila's Earth Cage trapped them, letting Bera's Firestorm incinerate them. The boars charged, but Tira's Blaze Lance pierced their hides, and my Vortex Strike with Pyroclast Swords gutted them. Varkoth's Shadow Bind kept them pinned, and we looted 15 Level 3 Spirit Stones and Ironfang tusks. My bugs joined in, Bertili's crystal claws slicing fox tails, Stinky's mandibles crushing boar legs. The girls didn't comment, but I caught their grudging nods.

As thunder rumbled, rain threatening, we spotted a cave in the pass's final stretch. "Shelter," Tira said, leading us in. The cave was dry, its walls etched with faint runes that pulsed with old Qi. We set up camp, the girls quiet, still rattled by the execution. I stoked a fire, feeding Bertili and Stinky, whispering to them about our bug empire. Varkoth coiled nearby, his new Middle Master aura steady.

Tira broke the silence, her voice low. "You're a bastard, Killy, but you keep us alive."

Bera smirked. "Barely."

Lila sighed, her earth Qi settling. "Just… warn us next time."

I grinned, tossing a stick into the fire. "No promises, ladies. But stick with me, and we'll burn Forgehold to the ground."

Varkoth hissed. "Father's chaos will reign."

The storm broke outside, rain hammering the pass, but inside, our fire burned bright. Forgehold loomed closer, its secrets waiting, my amulet's pulses ignored in the heat of our bond—fractured, fiery, and unbreakable.
