Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The Dawn of Shadows
The black-sailed ship cut through the waves like a dagger, its crew of bloodthirsty pirates hollering and jeering as they prepared to raid the island. The faint clang of swords being sharpened carried on the salty wind, and I could already make out the captain, a hulking man with a tricorn hat and a pair of massive axes strapped to his back. His scarred face twisted into a grin as he pointed toward the shore.
"Looks like we've got ourselves a warm welcome, boys!" he bellowed. "Ready your blades. We're taking everything!"
The pirates erupted in cheers, but my smirk only grew. They didn't know what was waiting for them. Not yet.

The System pinged again.

I glanced at the notification, and a plan began to form in my head. My hand tightened into a fist as I eyed the wreckage scattered along the beach. The remains of barrels and crates weren't just debris, they were weapons in disguise.
"Shadow Storage, huh?" I muttered, kneeling beside a shattered plank with rusty nails sticking out of it. "Let's put this to good use."
I touched the plank, and it dissolved into a pool of inky blackness before vanishing entirely. The System confirmed the successful storage. Within seconds, I repeated the process, pulling in sharp pieces of driftwood, rusted tools, and broken bottle shards. Anything and everything that could be used to deal damage.

As the pirates drew closer, I turned to my two shadow soldiers: the hulking Shadow Beast and the skeletal Pirate Shadow. The former let out a guttural growl, while the latter silently awaited my orders, its hollow eyes glowing faintly.
"Alright," I said, my voice steady. "Here's the plan. Beast, you're our wall. Keep them busy. Pirate, you're flanking, pick off anyone who strays too far from their buddies."
The shadows didn't reply, but I could feel their silent acknowledgment. I raised my hand, calling forth the stored shadows in the sand, and more forms began to rise. They were crude, barely shaped humanoid figures forged from the remnants of the fallen pirates I'd killed earlier. Weak, yes, but enough to serve as distractions.

The pirate ship hit the shallow waters near the beach, and rowboats were already descending from its deck, filled to the brim with snarling marauders. The first boat hit the sand, and the pirates leaped out, weapons gleaming in the sunlight.
"You lot are in for a world of pain!" the first pirate roared, swinging a cutlass as he charged straight at me.
I didn't flinch. I raised my hand, and my shadow soldiers surged forward.
"Show them what the shadows can do!" I commanded.
The Shadow Beast barreled toward the incoming pirates, its sheer size and speed catching them off guard. The first unfortunate pirate barely had time to scream before the beast's massive claw swiped him aside like a ragdoll. Blood sprayed across the sand as the pirate's body crumpled, his weapon clattering to the ground.
My Pirate Shadow moved like a specter, weaving through the chaos with eerie precision. Its rusted blade slashed through throats and stabbed into chests with mechanical efficiency. For every pirate that tried to hit it, their swords passed harmlessly through its incorporeal form, leaving them open for a killing blow.
But it wasn't enough. More and more pirates were pouring onto the beach. The captain himself leaped off the ship with a thundering crash, his twin axes gleaming menacingly. His gaze locked onto me, and a grin spread across his scarred face.
"You've got guts, kid," he said, his deep voice rumbling. "I'll give you that. But guts don't mean squat against me."
The air around him seemed to thicken with bloodlust, and I realized this wasn't an ordinary pirate captain. No, this guy had something special, Haki.

"Of course," I muttered. "A Haki user. Why not?"
Captain Harlock slammed his axes together, creating a metallic ring that echoed across the beach. "I've killed Marines, bounty hunters, and even a few Sea Kings. Whatever little tricks you're using aren't gonna save you."
I clenched my fists, trying to ignore the chill running down my spine. This guy was dangerous, but I wasn't the same person I was a day ago. The System had made me stronger, and I wasn't about to back down.

"Let's see how you handle this," I said, raising my hand. "Rise!"
The shadows behind Harlock rippled, and three more figures emerged, new shadow soldiers forged from the pirates his crew had already lost. They were weak compared to my Beast and Pirate Shadow, but they didn't need to be strong. They just needed to be a distraction.
"Attack!" I commanded.
The new shadows lunged at Harlock, their weapons raised. He reacted instantly, his axes a blur as he cleaved through them with ease. The shadows disintegrated into nothingness, but I didn't care. They'd done their job.
I was already moving.

I sprinted toward him, activating my Dagger Mastery (Lv. 2). My movements were faster, more precise, and my makeshift weapon, a jagged piece of driftwood I'd pulled from Shadow Storage, felt like an extension of my arm. Harlock spotted me coming and turned, his axes raised.
Our weapons clashed, and I felt the jarring force of his Haki-infused strength. It nearly knocked me off balance, but I gritted my teeth and held firm. My shadow soldiers were still wreaking havoc on the rest of his crew, and I couldn't afford to lose focus.
"You're quick," Harlock admitted, pushing me back with a grunt. "But you're no match for me."
I smirked, my confidence growing. "Maybe not. But I'm not alone, am I?"
Harlock's eyes widened as my Shadow Beast lunged at him from behind, its massive jaws snapping shut around one of his axes. The beast growled, thrashing its head and tearing the weapon from his grip. Harlock stumbled, momentarily thrown off balance.
And that was all the opening I needed.

I darted forward, driving the jagged driftwood into his exposed side. It wasn't a fatal blow, his Haki had absorbed some of the impact, but it was enough to draw blood. Harlock roared, his remaining axe swinging wildly, but I ducked under the attack and rolled to safety.
"Not so tough now, are you?" I taunted, wiping the sweat from my brow. My shadows closed in around him, circling like vultures. Harlock growled, his eyes darting between me and the soldiers surrounding him.
The fight wasn't over yet, but I could feel it.
Victory was within reach.
Harlock snarled, blood dripping from the wound I'd managed to inflict. His eyes burned with fury, his towering frame radiating a palpable aura of menace. His Haki-coated axe glinted ominously in the sunlight as he adjusted his grip, stepping forward with purpose. Despite the chaos surrounding him, my shadows tearing through his crew like reapers in a field, he focused entirely on me.
"You're clever, I'll give you that," he spat, his voice a guttural growl. "Using tricks and cheap shadows to whittle us down. But you've made one mistake, boy."
I straightened up, my makeshift weapon still dripping with his blood. "Oh yeah? And what's that?"
"You pissed me off."
Harlock slammed his foot into the ground, and the earth split. The force of his blow sent a shockwave ripping through the beach, knocking me and my weaker shadows off balance. The pirates cheered at the display of strength, their morale temporarily bolstered despite the bodies of their comrades littering the sand.
"Come on then, Shadow Boy," Harlock sneered, his axe gleaming as he pointed it at me. "Let's see what you're really made of."

I didn't need to answer. The Shadow Beast roared, its guttural bellow shaking the air as it lunged at Harlock with reckless abandon. Its claws tore through the sand, leaving deep trenches in their wake as it closed the gap in a single bound. The sheer size of the beast made it seem like an unstoppable force of nature.
But Harlock was ready.
With one powerful swing, his axe cleaved into the Shadow Beast's shoulder, cutting deep into its inky flesh. The Beast staggered back, roaring in pain as black smoke hissed from the wound. For the first time since I'd summoned it, I saw one of my soldiers falter.
The System chimed, and a small warning appeared in my peripheral vision.

"Not so invincible now, are you?" Harlock barked, his grin widening as he pulled his axe free, spinning it with ease. "A real man doesn't hide behind tricks. A real man fights face-to-face!"
I clenched my fists, forcing myself to think fast. The Shadow Beast wasn't just a brute, it was smart, and it could still fight. I needed to play to its strengths and mine if we had any hope of taking Harlock down.
"Beast, back off!" I commanded, and the creature obeyed instantly, retreating several paces as Harlock prepared for another swing. "Stay mobile. Don't let him get a clean hit again."
The Shadow Beast lowered its stance, growling as it began to circle Harlock like a predator stalking its prey. Every few steps, it swiped at him, forcing him to stay on the defensive. Harlock swung his axe at the Beast's claws, sparks flying as metal met shadow, but I could tell he was getting frustrated. He was used to overpowering his enemies, not outmaneuvering them.
That was my opening.
________________________________
While Harlock was distracted with the Shadow Beast, I slipped into the fray, using the chaos of the ongoing battle to my advantage. The weaker shadows I'd summoned earlier were still wreaking havoc among the remaining pirates, forcing them to fight on two fronts. Some were trying to retreat to their ship, but my Pirate Shadow wasn't letting them escape. It moved like a ghost, cutting them down one by one with its rusted blade.
"Stay focused," I muttered to myself, gripping the piece of driftwood tighter as I stalked toward Harlock. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, but I forced the fear down. I wasn't the same person I'd been when I first woke up on this island. I had power now. Shadows. A System.
And I wasn't going to lose.
Harlock's back was turned as he fended off the Shadow Beast's relentless attacks, his movements slower now as fatigue began to set in. He'd taken out several of my weaker soldiers, but it had cost him. Sweat dripped down his face, mixing with the blood from his wound.
Now was my chance.
I activated Shadow Dash, a skill I'd picked up earlier after leveling up. My body blurred as I moved through the shadows, reappearing directly behind Harlock. For a split second, everything slowed, the sound of the crashing waves, the cries of the pirates, even the growling of the Shadow Beast.
Then, I struck.
The Turning Point
I drove the jagged driftwood into Harlock's back with all the strength I could muster, aiming for the gap between his ribs. The wood splintered as it pierced through flesh, and Harlock let out a roar of pain. He spun around, his free hand lashing out like a whip, and I barely managed to duck under the blow.
"You little bastard!" he bellowed, his eyes wild with rage. He swung his axe toward me, but I was already moving, using Shadow Dash to retreat to a safe distance.
Harlock staggered, clutching at the wound in his back. Blood seeped through his fingers, staining his tattered coat. "You think you've won?!" he snarled, his voice echoing across the battlefield. "I'm not going down that easily!"
He raised his axe, and for a moment, I thought he was going to charge at me. But then, to my horror, his body began to radiate a dark red aura. The ground beneath his feet cracked, and the air grew heavy with oppressive energy.
The System pinged.

"Of course he has a trump card," I muttered, my mind racing. This wasn't good. Harlock was already dangerous enough, but now he was even stronger, and I wasn't sure if my shadows could handle him.
The Shadow Beast growled, sensing the shift in power. It lunged at Harlock again, but this time, the captain was ready. He moved faster than I thought possible, sidestepping the Beast's attack and bringing his axe down in a devastating arc.
The axe cleaved through the Shadow Beast's neck, and the massive creature collapsed with a thunderous crash. Its form began to dissolve into black smoke, and I felt a sharp pang in my chest as the System delivered the bad news.
Shadow Beast defeated.
"No!" I shouted, my voice cracking. Losing the Beast was a huge blow, it was my strongest summon, and now I had to face Harlock without it.
The captain turned to me, his grin more savage than ever. "Looks like your pet couldn't handle the heat," he said, stalking toward me with slow, deliberate steps. "You're next, boy."

I refused to back down. I couldn't. Not now.
"Pirate Shadow!" I called out, and my loyal minion responded instantly, abandoning the fight with the remaining pirates to stand by my side. It raised its sword, ready to defend me, but even with its help, I knew the odds weren't in my favor.
I needed a plan, and fast.
Harlock was closing the distance, his blood-red aura crackling like fire around him. Every step he took sent shivers down my spine, but I forced myself to stay calm. There had to be a way to beat him. The System wouldn't have sent this challenge my way if it wasn't possible.
"Think," I muttered, my eyes darting around the battlefield. The beach was littered with debris, broken weapons, shattered crates, and the bodies of fallen pirates. My Shadow Storage was still half-full, and I had one more ace up my sleeve.
I extended my hand, summoning one of the items I'd stored earlier: a broken bottle, its jagged edges glinting dangerously. It wasn't much, but it would have to do.
"Pirate Shadow, distract him!" I commanded, and my minion obeyed without hesitation, rushing forward to engage Harlock. The captain growled, swinging his axe in a wide arc, but the shadow was too fast, darting around him like a wraith.
While Harlock was distracted, I activated Shadow Meld, sinking into the inky darkness at my feet. The world around me became a blur as I moved through the shadows, reappearing directly behind Harlock once again.
This time, I didn't hesitate.
I drove the jagged bottle into the back of his knee, aiming for the tendon. Harlock roared in agony, dropping to one knee as his leg gave out. He lashed out wildly, but I was already gone, using Shadow Dash to retreat to a safe distance.
"That's the thing about shadows," I said, my voice steady despite the pounding of my heart. "They're everywhere. And they're mine."

Harlock struggled to his feet, his movements slower now. His Blood Rage was taking its toll, and I could see the exhaustion in his eyes. He raised his axe one last time, but before he could attack, I gave the command.
"Pirate Shadow, finish it."
My minion lunged forward, its blade slicing through the air with unerring precision. Harlock's eyes widened as the rusted sword pierced his chest, driving deep into his heart. He staggered, his axe falling from his hands as he collapsed to the ground.
For a moment, everything was still.
Then, the System pinged.

I dropped to my knees, gasping for breath as the adrenaline began to fade. The remaining pirates, seeing their captain defeated, scrambled back to their ship, their morale shattered. My shadows didn't pursue them. They didn't need to. The fight was over.
I stared at Harlock's body as it began to dissolve into shadows, the dark essence flowing toward me like a river. I extended my hand, and the System's words filled my vision.
